Do you like these Windows or not?

First floor extension of a modest 60s semi.

Do you like them or would they look silly? Should we just go for a regular rectangular window?

Have you found the bedside tables that will fit underneath them? If so, I’d go for it. But it is limiting your furniture options. You don’t want furniture poking up the top. You could train a couple of Jasmine Trasminoides up round the kitchen window and between the two long windows at the top to cover the expanse of wall. That would look good.

senua · 05/07/2026 20:11

I don't like the windows.
It seems that they are like that to accommodate the bed position. So the question is: why do you have the bad facing away from the view of the garden, trees and sky?Confused

Blarn · 05/07/2026 20:17

I think if they were a little bit shorter at the bottom and the bottom window wider if would look really good.

senua · 05/07/2026 20:20

Ha! AI has even, helpfully, given you a piece of artwork above the bed of the type of view you might be missing!Grin

BathersOnTheLine · 05/07/2026 20:37

With the 'teeth' of the lower window the house looks like a surprised rabbit. Could you put in two tall chimneys on the top to complete the look?

Could it look better if you clad the top of the extension with coloured weatherboard?

Sometimes you see a house that an unqualified owner has designed for themselves. They've put in one window/door/feature of every type they like and it ends up a patchwork of curiosities. When they finally put it on the market it languishes forever until the price is low enough for someone to buy it and rip it apart. I think you might be going there with this.

Oh and do the windows actually open ? Maybe this is necessary for regs ? IDK.

Opening them could be difficult due to the weight.

Nonsense, my windows are taller and wider than a standard front door.....they open partial and fully no problem.

That is basically how my bedroom was in germany but windows were wider lol it was the only place to put the bed due to wardrobe and ensuite placement

Ibi · 05/07/2026 20:58

I take it they don’t open? Who has designed this for you? They shouldn’t be openable as they are too low to the floor for a room that’s not ground level. You’d need to either split them in half horizontally and have the top half openable, or have a Juliet balcony on the outside, or very limited opening on the tilt. It doesn’t look like a good design to me and I’d question the architect that produced these for you.

I totally get this and is why I wanted to sanity check. There would be absolutely nothing else non standard with this house. May just play it safe and avoid the risk.

I like them

ThinkingIsAllowed · 05/07/2026 21:09

They look good on the inside but weird from the outside imo, sorry

spstchmu · 05/07/2026 21:10

Potentially more difficult/expensive to replace when needed. That would be my main issue

ParsonMaybold · 05/07/2026 21:13

No. Very, very ugly.

Apileofballyhoo · 05/07/2026 21:18

I'd play with the length and width outside and inside until the outside looks a bit better but the inside still has the look you're going for. Lower the height as being so close to the roof looks off, and widen the downstairs window to provide balance - can you have 2 windows downstairs?

Ezzee · 05/07/2026 21:19

ParsonMaybold · 05/07/2026 21:13

No. Very, very ugly.

This.
Also agree with the poster above, why would you have a bed there?
I would put 3 of those windows in if you like them not 2, also would change that lower window to a wider one.

Okiedokie123 · 05/07/2026 21:20

I think it looks nice inside...... on a nice sunny day but probably gloomy and dark for much of the year? And it looks awful on the outside. Like two long eyes on a face. Not a good look and I think you'd be reducing the value of the house if you go with that option.

SweepSqueaks · 05/07/2026 21:20

I really don’t like them. It’s like a prison.

MotherofPufflings · 05/07/2026 21:26

I think those style windows look nice as additional windows but not as the only ones. Can you put a standard window in the back and then have these on the side of the house? I don't think it's a particulaly great layout to have the windows behind you and not to be able to see a window from the bed.

Mumteedum · 05/07/2026 21:30

Notsodisney · 05/07/2026 19:46

I quite like that the house looks surprised😂

They actually made me laugh for exactly this reason 😂

Tortephant · 05/07/2026 21:42

NO

supercrone · 05/07/2026 21:52

They look great from the inside, and it's the back of the house so who cares? I'd go for it

longtompot · 05/07/2026 21:53

I like the look from the inside, but outside does look a little odd. I think it's because of the window below. Could that be the two windows instead?

I wonder if having squarer windows might look better, though they might just look like bigger eyes. I have done a rough drawing which will appear soon

Or maybe make even more of a statement and have floor to ceiling windows and make them a bit wider. As they face your garden, you don't need to worry as much about passing people looking in

Are they wide enough for a person to escape through in a fire? If not, they’re a no-go for a bedroom and you won’t get building regs for the extension.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 05/07/2026 22:03

becsmeister · 05/07/2026 19:40

No, but it will be over a kitchen counter so a bit limited in the height it will be at.

Also the vertical windows could be made longer or shorter, wider too.

I’ve had a rethink. You could balance it by having a matching trellis (with ivy? Pyracantha?) below each window, bracketing the downstairs window. That may help to even things up.

TeenLifeMum · 05/07/2026 22:03

I really like them - but I hate boring houses. Next door has similar on their extension and it’s so much better than the other house in the road’s standard windows.
