Leaving a note for the buyers of our house when we move?

ErlingHaalandsManBun · Yesterday 16:44

Have you done this when you have moved?

I think I am going to leave them a note with some useful info on for them. So far I have got:

The codes for the outbuilding locks
How to read the gas and tell if you need to order more (we are on LPG)
Who our gas supplier is
Who services our boiler
Who cuts our hedges (they expressed an interest in getting this done also)
Who our window cleaner is (although we will cancel him before we leave)
When bin day is

Is there anything else you would include/have included if you have done the same for your buyer?

Anything else you would do/leave before you go?

Along with all the usual info as above posts, I also mentioned foxes often passed through the garden and squirrels too plus the compost bin was home to slow worms so we left it alone after speaking to the council about possible relocation of the worms which we were told no, as they are protected and should not be disturbed.

I really hope the new owners have left them where they are.

I would sooo love to move into a house with slow worms in the compost. Lucky people.

I hope anyone buying a new house changes the locks immediately!

When I moved I left paint colours for rooms recently decorated - bin day - window cleaner number.

We had tenants who complained there wasn't enough paint to touch up their damage - we left half a tin of Farrow and Ball - so they painted two walls with cheap crap that didn't match!

I did this fifteen years ago . I also left the instruction leaflets for all the integrated appliances , and written instructions on how to use the jacuzzi bath in the bathroom. 😀.

If you put more than a teaspoon of bubble bath in the bubbles would expand all over the floor .

As a final comment: Don't forget to take all the lightbulbs so they don't feel too comfortable :)

I prepared a comprehensive list of excellent local tradespeople, the chimney sweep, window cleaner, and all the house information.

Then our buyer showed himself to be a 24 carat prick so I binned everything.

Had a call from the estate agent 3 months later asking where the stopcock is. I said I didn't know. (I do, and they'd never find it in a million years.)

What did you achieve by not telling them?

I would sooo love to move into a house with slow worms in the compost. Lucky people.

I created quite a colony when I used to ride a lot, and brought home lots of muck from the stable.

I still keep garden compost and shredded prunings, which they like.

Cats will hunt them.

Our sons both moved a couple of years ago, both had a folder with all the instruction leaflets, recent service details.Details of stopcock etc.
DS1 was less than impressed when his boiler wouldn’t fire up properly in the winter- had been ok when he moved in April and heated water during the summer. He rang the chap who had serviced it, and was told there was no point in him coming out as he had already told the vendors it needed replacing. He thought they had asked someone else to do it.

Talkinpeace · Today 19:38

I inherited

  • the full history of the site back to c17 farmland
  • a full list of all the shrubs and trees
  • a fully annotated fude box and key set
  • about a tonne of fence panel wood
  • a 6 foot freezer of fruit
  • a loft full of useful things
  • hard copies of every deed change on the house since it was built
AND Our seller phoned us every Sunday morning till he died, asking what we were changing

It was wonderful and how house sales SHOULD be done

We have a road WhatsApp, I would let them know the people that organise this. For use it is a really great contact group. I have always left notes and received them when I have moved.

BreatheAndFocus · Today 19:42

Yes, I left a note with bin collection day, stopcock, water meter, etc, along with the name of a reliable plumber we used, and the name of the person who serviced our boiler. I also labelled each key and put the names of the neighbours either side of us in case they needed help.

Walker1178 · Today 19:43

I remember moving into a new house as a child and the previous owners left a lovely letter, a multipack of crisps and some cans of cola. We were all well happy to walk into the kitchen and find it waiting on the worktop for us

A pack of preprinted address labels for anything that does not get redirected (you can pay the post office to do it but you will not be able to renew it if you let it expire). Christmas cards are particularly likely to arrive.

A note of the final meter readings on the day you move out (you will also notify these to the utility companies yourself) including the water meter, which you may find it difficult to read without a torch, ladle and rag. Photograph them with your phone. Code and instructions for burglar alarm,.

I left kettle, milk, tea, coffee, ugar, spoons, biscuits, mugs, loo rolls, basic cleaning stuff, spare light bulbs, paint, and asked if they could use the hoover, they said yes, so I left it.

Keys with labels, including the window locks.

I was on good terms with my buyers, and after a year they discovered some forgotten jewellery in a wall safe and posted it to me,

O/T but my evening just got better for knowing PigletJohn is still here

Where the stopcock is.

All copies of all keys for the house, including getting them back from neighbours/family who have them for emergencies.

Forwarding address in case anything slips through your post redirection?

I was about to suggest this… and a bunch of flowers with a final note wishing they enjoy the house as much as we did.

mindutopia · Today 20:03

We got literally boxes of stuff. Including all the history of the property. Old deeds of various sorts. Photos, they lived there 40 years, so there was a lot! And about 30 houseplants including a blooming 40 year old cactus that they clearly left because it was too tall to fit out the door. We also have their contact details and have kept in touch through the years m. We do an annual Christmas card to each other where we promise to have them over in the summer to see how beautiful the garden looks and then every year I panic that they’ll think their beautiful garden looks like shit so it never happens. 😂

Spite.

Or karma, depending on what the buyer had done.

My old neighbours were stiffed by their buyer who dropped their offer days before the date of entry, knowing that the neighbours were emigrating and had booked their tickets.

It wasn’t forgotten by the rest of the close. Karma came when they eventually sold for a lot less than they’d paid.

ChopstickNovice · Today 20:06

I did this. List of tradespeople, locations of stuff, where the water meter was etc etc, and included a list of neighbours we knew of - Jon and Diane at number 6 or whatever. Estate agents emailled a few weeks later to say how pleased they were to have it. Ex neighbours then messaged me (happily) to say our buyers had taken cupcakes around to everyone to introduce themselves! :)

SylvanMoon · Today 20:15

Leaving a list like that is a very neighbourly thing to do. If you've a garden, perhaps a list of any perennials growing in it (and where) and if any of the trees or bushes have edible fruits.

LivingTheDreamish · Today 20:18

Any bits of hardware purchased for that specific property that would be hard to repurchase and would be useless to me elsewhere - special fixtures for the pantry shelves, glass inserts for the spotlights that were not required with the brand of bulb available locally so were sitting in a drawer. Why be a dick and take them with me or throw them out?

And? Did you mean to post this here? What’s it got to do with the thread?

NinjaCoffee · Today 20:33

I did. I also left them a bottle of champagne and said ‘I hope you make amazing memories in this house, like we did’

I’d be so pissed off at them leaving loads of boxes of their crap. Old photos? Why would you want those?

HeyMoonPie · Today 20:34

When we have moved we have always left a folder of information, keys labelled etc along with a bottle of bubbly and flowers. We also invite them around to go over our heating systems as my husband likes to replicate the queen mary boiler house - our heating is on 24/7/365 - in those days it was innovative and actually makes heating old houses cheaper. Our buyers turned this offer down However last time (and being in the shortest chain possible) our buyers called contacted our solicitors threatening to pull out if we didn't include "a huge extra" into the house sale oh and to bring forward completion by an hour!! Thankfully we had great packers who assured us they would be finished. I went into the kitchen to find my husband sweeping the folder and all instruction books etc into a random box marked kitchen and said tough! We were out in time but then the owners of the house we were buying delayed so we sent 16 containers into storage and camped for 2 weeks. During those 2 weeks we had numerous requests regarding all sorts of things which unfortunately we were "unable to help with" and they would have had to spend money getting sorted. Decades later I am still traumatised by the whole experience (emoji laughing sideways face) 😜

Calling · Today 20:37

Our sellers left a cute little cross stitch picture of a flower in a frame and we still have it, just haven't got the heart to take it to the charity shop.
And a tea spoon.
And all sorts in the garage, eg a pick axe.
