Leaving a note for the buyers of our house when we move?

ErlingHaalandsManBun · Yesterday 16:44

Have you done this when you have moved?

I think I am going to leave them a note with some useful info on for them. So far I have got:

The codes for the outbuilding locks
How to read the gas and tell if you need to order more (we are on LPG)
Who our gas supplier is
Who services our boiler
Who cuts our hedges (they expressed an interest in getting this done also)
Who our window cleaner is (although we will cancel him before we leave)
When bin day is

Is there anything else you would include/have included if you have done the same for your buyer?

Anything else you would do/leave before you go?

Along with all the usual info as above posts, I also mentioned foxes often passed through the garden and squirrels too plus the compost bin was home to slow worms so we left it alone after speaking to the council about possible relocation of the worms which we were told no, as they are protected and should not be disturbed.

I really hope the new owners have left them where they are.

When we sold our old family home after mum died, we left a bottle of champagne, chocolates & a card wishing them many years of happiness in their new home.

The lady’s parents lived in the next road in the same style of house, so would have known information re: stopcock etc.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · Today 18:05

Yes. When we left we had extended and fully renovated and I left all manuals, paint colours, spare paint, keys labelled and everything else I could think of in a folder.

I had a full professional clean including carpet cleaning done.

The buyers then asked for our details so these were passed on and I answered a few additional questions here and there as needed.

Kindness never hurts anyone in these types of situations.

When we rented our last home the landlords left us a lovely pack with info on best cafes, supermarkets, walks and their favourite restaurants. It was very sweet and lovely.

I left tea bags, coffee, two mugs that I had no use of and a pint of milk and packet of biscuits!

my vendor left me a bottle of wine and a bottle of alcohol free fizz

That is a lovely thing to do. Our sellers just left us a very dirty house

Where the stopcock is.
This in the conveyancing pack as is where the water meter is if there is one.

godmum56 · Today 18:22

I've always done it, also left a couple of large stamped addressed envelopes because sometimes mail forwarding is a bit bumpy at the beginning or may not start in time

Utility companies
Roll of bog paper

I think its a beautiful idea as someone who's had loads of homes knowing when the bin men come. The room sizes if they need or want flooring.
You have added lots of important information. I wish you a great home move .

When we moved into one house, the owners wanted to charge us for really horrible, swirly old fashioned patterned carpets, which, unsurprisingly, we politely said we didn't want. They pulled it up, but left the metal strips in the doorway - the sort with sharp spikes to hold carpets in place. They did this knowing we had a 2 year old who was used to running around in bare feet. They also took all the light bulbs..... Not impressive!

Seasidelife1 · Today 18:33

We left instruction manuals. I also left a welcome to your new home card with a bottle of bubbly and cuddly toys with some chocolate buttons for the children.
The house was cleaned so much it was practically sterile 😂 I just wanted them to walk in and have a positive experience for them all.

The previous owners of my house did that including the manual for the boiler and the oven they left and it was so helpful, they also left me a bottle of prosecco and a new home card which was very sweet of them.

AInightingale · Today 18:42

Measurements for stair carpet are useful to have, if you've kept the last invoice. For some reason (probably valid) carpet companies never trust customers' own measurements and insist on coming out to do it, which is a bit of a pain.

FedUpandFiftyNine · Today 18:43

I think people do often take plants from their garden, and it’s not always vindictive. When my dad moved out of our old family home we dug up 3-4 plants and rose bushes as they had been planted/ were favourites of my late mum. Best to flag that you intend to take them though.

FantasyFoodhall · Today 18:43

I appreciated it when our sellers did this. They included location of stopcock, explained how to set the oven clock (unusually tricky!), neighbours names, paint colours with rooms labelled on the sample tins , key copies labelled, names of tree surgeon and hedge cutter they used, window cleaner etc. It was really useful.

Pondering2026 · Today 18:44

I have, a list of things they'll need to know. I also left a good luck in your new home card and a plant gift.

Silverbirchleaf · Today 18:46

We were given a folder with lots of information in, including instruction manuals, guarantees, and even details of the paint colours used.

Do NOT leave contact details!!! 2 years on my DH was still getting text messages about the heating system settings, the induction hob, the coffee machine etc etc etc. Eventually I had to take over the replies and I was quite brutal which was a shame as they were lovely people

FantasyFoodhall · Today 18:54

Just remembered that in a house we had several
years ago, the sellers left me info on all the work they’d had done on the house that was still within guarantee, and the tradespeople they’d found to do it.
It was great as there was an issue with a couple of things and I needed a repair on the flooring they’d put in.

GOODCAT · Today 18:59

When we moved we couldn't work out that we needed to use a separate light switch for one end of the kitchen, the actual switch was in a somewhat unique place, and also couldn't find the keys to various sheds outside.

The late owner's family had tried to be fair and left us a full owners manual including all the latest utility bills with everything in. They also left us the curtains and a table and chairs which was handy as we had very little furniture.

Bebeemerald · Today 19:00

Do NOT leave your email or phone number. I know people who’ve been absolutely harassed by doing this.

I don’t like all the sentimental stuff - a good luck message, bottle of cava, appliance manuals and job done

mondaytosunday · Today 19:03

I always write a card and leave a bottle of wine or box of chocolates. And yes an info sheet. I don’t think anyone has done it for me though!

andthat · Today 19:05

littleredpiano · Yesterday 17:13

Yes, as well as the practical stuff, I’ve always written something sentimental too. Like wishing them happy memories in the house and left them a little gift. When we moved in covid it was Easter egg for their child, a little bottle of bubbly and a hand sanitiser.

I’m a big believer in saying a verbal thank you out-loud to the house too.

I do this on holiday when leaving accommodation. When we sell a car I thank it for keeping us safe.

I know I’m sentimental but it just feels like a sense of completion to me.

Edited

The world needs more people like you @littleredpiano

I prepared a comprehensive list of excellent local tradespeople, the chimney sweep, window cleaner, and all the house information.

Then our buyer showed himself to be a 24 carat prick so I binned everything.

Had a call from the estate agent 3 months later asking where the stopcock is. I said I didn't know. (I do, and they'd never find it in a million years.)

Sweet!

LongDarkTeatime · Today 19:11

After selling our 1st house (did loads of work to it) we left a binder with all the details of trades who had done which jobs, user manuals etc. We added a note saying how wonderful it had been living there and wishing them as much joy.
A few days later we found out they’d appreciated it as had forgotten some stuff left in the shed and they happily gave it back to us (even though they didn’t have to).
