How long are council housing waits for growing families?

Hi
We moved to a one bedroom flat in Stockport a year ago. I had my son and now expecting again near Christmas. How long did people wait to get a council house of flat.
We can’t afford a two bedroom flat on the private market so having council house would help a lot.

Thank you

Where I live, in London, the wait for a 2 bedroom property because you’re in a one bed and overcrowded would be 10 years. By that time - depending on the sexes of children - you may be need a 3 bedroom property. That wait is on average 23 years. I imagine Stockport is less but you can normally find that on their website.

We were very happy with just one.

It sounds like you need to increase your joint income so that you can afford a 2-bed flat, or you need to look in cheaper areas.

One of you could work evenings or weekends to increase your income. Or you could arrange childcare shares with other working parents so that you can work a few days a week, if you are not already.

You haven’t said where in Stockport you live but are there any cheaper areas within commuting distance for your husband?

These are all ways DH and I made it work when we had a second baby on a very low income.

Thank you
10 years sounds depressing lol.

So you have options, you don’t HAVE to keep
it

Kirbert2 · 30/04/2026 20:29

It will depend on how council housing works in Stockport. Where I am, you would be considered adequately housed and overcrowding wouldn't get you anywhere near A or B on banding. You also wouldn't be classed as overcrowded until the baby is 1 or 2 I think.

I was on band A due to my very specific situation and I was housed within 1 month, again, due to a very specific situation involving health/disability.

You have a council house. Most people never get one.

So therefore...?

Yes I was responsible for the finance but when he came here but once the person is in UK either they or myself would have to meet the income threshold. Yes he earns 30k but problem is with expenses of baby and now our rent is being increased we just will really struggle with two bedroom. We have already cut down drastically.
problem is his work involves carrier goods and you have to get special kind of insurance to insure the goods. He also passed his driving a year ago.

Ah. A courier. My ex dh was the same. Goods in transit

thi also means shouldn’t be paying barely any tax if earns £30k and expenses are that high

maybe he should look at a different job so not paying out all that costs

TheGander · 30/04/2026 20:39

Don’t understand why you are getting such a pasting OP. It’s a fair enough question. If it’s any consolation, 23 years ago when I was pregnant and renting in London, with rent going up relentlessly I applied to go on council housing list. Didn’t get offered anything and I asked where I was in the waiting list. Was told it was about no 4000. A housing officer told me realistically I had no hope, and if I could afford it , to buy somewhere. I scraped enough together to do that, in a much less lovely area of London, where I still live, with DH and 2 kids.

WheresPollysDogGone · 30/04/2026 20:40

Where I am even Band A is taking 2-3 years.

I am in Band B due to specific circumstances (not overcrowding which is Band D here) and they've told me 5-7 years for a move.

Band C is 7-12 years

Band D is never unless you can get a swap with someone downsizing.

I guess I can apply for it and see it goes. It’s just annoying because the toilet is in same room as the living room and has no window. The bathroom doesn’t have radiator either just hassle putting electric heater in and taking it out. I have asthma too. I only accepted this flat 1.5 years ago but all the other flats said your salary is low or they chose other people because they had someone with higher salary.

Are you for real?

99Samblaze · 30/04/2026 20:44

Yes that’s the one. He was looking whole year for job didn’t get any so he just accepted this one.
With petrol and insurance.

Whether it's fair or not, you are unlikely to get anywhere near social housing for many years.

Would you be better to move out of Stockport to somewhere your rent would stretch to a two bed? Into Tameside and somewhere like Mossley or west to the Wigan area. Where is work in terms of commuting?

Although depends if you are in e.g Brinnington or Cheadle as to how far it may go elsewhere.

Better to do so before you are tied to schools.

Perfect28 · 30/04/2026 20:45

Do your teacher training, it'll set you on to a career with salary increments every year.

99Samblaze · 30/04/2026 20:46

We live in Heaton Chapel. I am from South of Manchester and that’s where my family is and friends so Ideally Manchester but I think because I moved to Stockport, I will have to apply to Stockport.

Does nobody bother to read OPs anymore? She doesn’t have a council house.

Are you in social housing now? It's not clear from your posts.

It's abundantly clear.

Contraception is free.
If it’s used correctly it rarely fails. If you can’t afford to hve more children which includes housing them then it’s a good idea to ensure you don’t fall pregnant ‘by accident’ again.
Nobody is ‘entitled’ to social housing anymore. it’s luck of the draw and there will be thousands of people ahead of you.
If you can’t afford to adequately house your children and pay for baby milk and nappies (breastfeeding is free and washable nappies are availaible) then would it not be an option to move to your husbands home country?
Maybe this article will give you an idea of how dire the situation is in the uk since we have had ridiculous amounts of immigration over the last 20 years.

Glasgow families face housing list wait of more than 100 years

Families could be waiting more than 100 years for a social rented home with three or more bedrooms in Glasgow.
