How long are council housing waits for growing families?

Hi
We moved to a one bedroom flat in Stockport a year ago. I had my son and now expecting again near Christmas. How long did people wait to get a council house of flat.
We can’t afford a two bedroom flat on the private market so having council house would help a lot.

Thank you

If you can't afford a 2 bed then you stay in a 1 bed. It's not rocket science.

This. Get a good sofa bed and use the living as your bedroom at night. Kids get the main bedroom and it doubles as a play area by day.

I don’t understand why people are saying this is a rage bait. The second pregnancy was unplanned I was planning to go back to full time but I just can’t justify paying more money into the pocket of landlords but I could save few quid.

So you can't afford private rent or can't justify it? You've said 2 different things. Don't get pregnant if you can't afford it.

I have never claimed UC in my life and don’t want to. I was planning to go back to full time work and finish my teacher induction program. My husband pays 450 a month for his van insurance and on top of that for petrol for his work. We really can’t afford to rent on two bed flat on private market on one income. We earns above 16k so we won’t be entitled to benefits either.

Sorry how much for van insurance? Does he have 95 points and work as a diamond courier?

Thats more than I pay for my van for a whole year

In the past it was quite common to have a council house and families had more dc than today

Thatcher let people buy them and didn't build anymore.

You might have to justify it as you need to provide a suitable house for your DC, and the wait for a council house could be years.

Do you both have no recourse to public funds?

Monty36 · 30/04/2026 19:19

As your husband is here on a visa that you sponsored as you say he cannot obtain public funds. You are expected to be self supporting.

InLoveWithAI · 30/04/2026 19:22

If he is here on a visa you supported, shouldn't you be earning enough to support you both for the visa to still be viable?

Burningbud1981 · 30/04/2026 19:24

99Samblaze · 30/04/2026 18:51

I have sponsored my husband on visa sponsorship. We not allowed to claim public funds. I was earning good wage until I got pregnant now pregnant again not planned. Most of his money goes towards petrol and van insurance he applied to loads of jobs but only that accepted it.

If you both have no recourse to public funds you aren’t entitled to social housing

Upsetbetty · 30/04/2026 19:25

Why can’t you go back to work?

ShetlandishMum · 30/04/2026 19:29

Years and years.
Sort your husband, children and find a place to rent like so many others if you aren't happy in your council housing.

This. Sounds like you might be better to be the main earner, although I appreciate that will change when you go on mat leave. Your partner paying £900 per month on insurance and petrol just sounds ridiculous sorry.

Notarealblonde · 30/04/2026 19:33

You wont be a priority any time soon.
You have two bedrooms and that is enough for two children to share one.

gamerchick · 30/04/2026 19:34

It doesn't work like that anymore OP. Christ, not for like 30 years or something. Sorry dude. You'll have to go on the list and do what you have to do now.

purpleygrey · 30/04/2026 19:36

Visa and UC aside. Stop having kids you can’t adequately house. It’s quite simple.

contraception is free.

Or a sofabed in the living room. Lots of people have that.

Can your husband stay at home and you go back to work, if you were on a good wage? I'm presuming you're not working now as you've no childcare?
Sorry nothing to do with the council flat issue but you probably need to have more income with 2 kids.

Gazelda · 30/04/2026 19:39

Have you registered on the councils housing list?

Gingerkittykat · 30/04/2026 19:41

Do you have recourse to public funds? If so, you will probably be entitled to a UC top-up even with your husband's status. It can also help towards childcare costs to allow you to go back to work.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 30/04/2026 19:41

@99Samblaze if you have no recourse to public funds, you cant apply for social housing.

I the area i work, you could get a 2 bed flat or 3 bed mausonette within a week of applying. It really is bonkers atm.

Avie29 · 30/04/2026 19:42

You will be on band C- lacking a bedroom. Don’t hold your breath.

Dontknowwhattobelieve2 · 30/04/2026 19:44

As you’ve already got a roof over your heads, albeit overcrowded, you’ll be waiting a very very long time. You’ll also be expected to use the living room as a bedroom and the children to share for at least 10 years, depending on whether DC2 is a boy or girl.

I was homeless through no fault of my own with a 5 year old and 4 month old, placed in a higher band and it took 6 months to be housed although this was 10 years ago I expect the waiting list to be longer now.

Your husband needs to increase his earnings or you need to look at moving somewhere cheaper. There are areas of the country where you can rent a 2 bed flat for less than £450 a month. You won’t be a priority for social housing.

If you’re not able to claim public funds then would you even be eligible for a council house?
