How long are council housing waits for growing families?

Hi
We moved to a one bedroom flat in Stockport a year ago. I had my son and now expecting again near Christmas. How long did people wait to get a council house of flat.
We can’t afford a two bedroom flat on the private market so having council house would help a lot.

Thank you

In my area, the average wait time is now 6 years, 2 years ago it was 2years 9 months wait (taken from council website). I think high private rents and increased mortgages driving homelessness, along with immigration have increased demand so much that if you have any type of home now, even if overcrowded, you are very unlikely to be housed. It’s a mess.

You have to work hard and sacrifice things for this. It shouldn’t just be given out for free…

As others have said council houses aren’t free, you still have to pay rent and month up front before you move in.
i have also seen on some properties a minimum income needed to move in.

Ignore these horrible comments.
You should gp on your local councils waiting list and upload evidence of your pregnancy asap for proof of being overcrowded.
Gather all evidence that you can to prove you need social housing , eg disabilities , children , mental health being affected ( don’t know what’s relevant to you from this list) .
I would also say going to see your MP who càn write a letter to your local councils waiting list would be hugely beneficial!
Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy x

It wont really

We aee classed as over crowded in a two bed i have two sons but my oldest is19 and youngest is 16 but severly autistic and cant share a room ,,Ot ,social services, My sons special school are all supporting us getting a bigger house ,but thhe reality is there are msny more people with a greater need they cant give us what they dont have.

I think when Tories came in power they did sell some social houses to the private market that’s what I heard anyway.
Where I live they sold nearly all of them to the tennents for half the market value so were snapped up. Who could blame them.

The bullies are living in cloud cuckoo land. Where we live in London you’d need around £100k deposit to buy a house. The housing ladder is slipping out of reach of even well paid workers.

ok, let's see then how fast the council house people on waiting lists are going to be living in reality waiting for all these imaginary houses

This is the reality not many people from foreign countries know about. He thought he was better off in here than his country but he said he regrets it. He comes from a middle class family in the Middle East. I think it’s more the uncertainty with wars in there that people are just worried. He is shocked at the level of poverty in UK. He thought he could work few years here and set up his own business but he knows now how wrong he was.

Middle class Midlde East money is hereditary money and is given to the sons. Why his parents do not fund more of his married life?

A few posters on here are embarrassing themselves to the nth degree, with the 'council housing is free' nonsense.

I don't know anyone in real life who thinks this.

Utterly batshit! 😂

it is for free. I live in a HA and know what is going on with the ones who are 20 to 40 and have never worked in their lives and yet have a family with kids

It is free FOR YOU and some people you know (if you are all getting your rent paid.)

MANY people in social housing do actually work.

Surely if you ARE in social housing, you should know this......?

nb, there is nothing wrong with being in social housing and on benefits/not working, but this absolute crock that people keep spouting that 'council housing is FREEEEEEE' really needs to stop. As I said, you're embarrassing yourselves!

Plenty of people in social housing have a job!

I cannot believe you are training to be a teacher, OP. I am married with one, he has his head screwed on and I am foreign also. Combined we even do not earn 40k yet own property in the SE and have tons of money left over. You are in Manchester area, houses 3 times cheaper. Goodness....are you sure you really are doing teachers training???

Not only , I have 4 homes abroad and am in the will of 2 rich uncles here in the UK

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · Yesterday 17:15

LMFAO!!! 😂

RaininSummer · Yesterday 17:42

OP .. apologies if already said but I think it would make much more sense for you to get a teaching post as soon as feasible after the second baby is born and your partner be the full time carer for them. I say this because you will earn more and you don't want to run out of time to complete your ECT. Also maybe there are keyworker houses/mortgages which may become available as a teacher. As soon as possible you can use nursery and partner can work too.

Nonsense. Every council home tenant I have ever known (I'm 62 and grew up in a council house), has been in full-time work.

You think all council tenants are on benefits?

Bryonyberries · Yesterday 18:35

I have a council house and work full time and pay my rent without benefits. Over the years when my children were small I’ve had tax credits/UC to top up wages but that is on the employer for not paying a living wage. I work full time hours and always have done. Council housing isn’t free. It’s non profit and kept at an affordable rent against wages. New build council properties are much more expensive and close to market rent. We pay out far more in housing benefit for private rental properties as they are often far higher than take home wages if you are close to min wage.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · Yesterday 19:10

Yes, as above ^ most people I know - in social housing - have at least one person in the household who has a job.

@mummymeister where is the OP saying she expects the state to 'pick up the tab?' ie; fund her life?

Are you one of those people who believes that ludicrous myth that council housing is free? And people live in it 'at the taxpayers expense?'

So, is there no advantage to council housing then?

It's not any cheaper or better value in any way? The Op even said she wanted it as having it would allow her to save a bit. Is she going to be in for a massive shock when she finds out that it is no cheaper at all?

My goodness, I'm scratching my head as to why all those lists for it are so long then.

If there is no difference cost wise to private renting or getting a mortgage, then why oh why do people try so hard to get it?

Security. It's 1+1 stuff and private rents aren't the same as London everywhere
