How long are council housing waits for growing families?

Hi
We moved to a one bedroom flat in Stockport a year ago. I had my son and now expecting again near Christmas. How long did people wait to get a council house of flat.
We can’t afford a two bedroom flat on the private market so having council house would help a lot.

Thank you

In the past it was quite common to have a council house and families had more dc than today

That was over forty years ago as it definitely wasn't the case in my adult lifetime.

99Samblaze · 30/04/2026 19:53

You are allowed to get council house I think. Just not allowed to claim public funds as in UC. He earns good salary but with high cost of living it just goes and with our baby’s milk food and pampers too.

Why should the government house you?

Could you please answer that very simple question?

mummypigoink · 30/04/2026 19:55

No one can answer this for you. It depends on the allocation policy of the council, how you score against that policy, how other people score, the stock they have, how fussy you are about area and, potentially, whether there are social or affordable rent properties coming through on new sites. Only the housing officers at your specific council could give an estimate and even then, it’ll be very rough.

Thatcher let people buy them and didn't build anymore.

Not really the point of the thread, but Thatcher did build more, though the numbers lessened over her tenure. They then fell further under Major, and collapsed completely under Blair. Selling off old, expensive to maintain properties was not a bad idea. Refusing to replace them, was. But hey, house prices rocketed under New Labour, which wouldn't have happened if anyone could've just had a freebie. The massive increase in population who required housing also helped, of course. So not all bad, I guess. I do find it so strange how so many people who hate Thatcher know absolutely nothing about her or her government. It's almost like they're just mindlessly repeating propaganda slogans.

You have one. But no most likely you won't get a bigger one for years. If you aren't happy rent or buy a place. Like most people.

I’m in my 30s and my biological clock isn’t helping besides why shouldn’t I be entitled to council house when I have worked since college and yet I had girls in my class who got pregnant after finishing high school had like 5 kids and got big council house with benefits. This is problem with Britain, always criticising hard working people.

I think your husband needs to change jobs as only earning 16 thousand a year but paying 450 a month on van insurance is crazy.

Thatcher let people buy them and didn't build anymore.

Neither did the Labour government that followed, and they had 13 years to do it.

Entitled to? Most of the population would be in 2026. Tbh you aren't different from most people.

Needaglowup · 30/04/2026 19:57

@99Samblaze your getting confused, it’s you can’t claim UC if you have 16k on saving not if you earn over 16k with couple and children x2 plus rent cost you well may be entitled to a UC top up on top of your husband wages

JehovasFitness · 30/04/2026 19:58

Where I live, also north west England, you’d be counting in decades, not months or years.

You are supposed to have sorted yourself adequate housing before expanding your family.

BeaPerry · 30/04/2026 19:59

You must be breaching the conditions of your sponser visa -
you as sponsor need to be earning at least £29,000
you are expected to be able to accommodate the children you have
you are very fortunate to have a council flat.
you are highly unlikely to be given a bigger one when there will be families in temporary accommodation needing it more
you are coming across as entitled / naive

Too soon.

You should’ve let it run to another few pages before this post.

Tut tut.

Around 8-15 year waiting list in greater Manchester.

I don’t understand why people are saying this is a rage bait. The second pregnancy was unplanned I was planning to go back to full time but I just can’t justify paying more money into the pocket of landlords but I could save few quid.

You planned the first one though? Without space to put a child, or the ability to move to private rental?

99Samblaze · 30/04/2026 20:01

He doesn’t earn 16k a year I said it’s above that.

I think she means he earns over 16k.

fartotheleftside · 30/04/2026 20:02

no, social housing counts as recourse to public funds. You can't get them if you're subject to immigration control

MyAgileHedgehog · 30/04/2026 20:02

In answer to your question..... Children up to the age of 16 are expected to share a bedroom if they are the same sex. Slightly younger if different sex.. So until then you won't be considered for overcrowding and you will be at the very bottom of the housing list.

Stockport has a very long wait list for social rent housing. Slightly shorter for Affordable Rent. It does depend on the area of Stockport. Brinnington has plenty of larger houses. Disley or Marple very few.

In the past. This is not the situation now! There simply is not the housing stock available.

No important. It's your and your husband's responsibility to support yourselves and the children you choose to have. Like the rest of the population.

“I just can’t justify paying more money into the pocket of landlords ”

I hate to say this, OP, but this isn’t a justification for getting a council house. What do you think everyone else does, who can’t afford to buy?

But council houses aren't free? You still pay rent and in London they are very expensive?
