What came with your house that you now would not be without?

Is there anything you inherited when you bought your house that you would never have bought yourself but now cant imagine not having?
Hope that makes sense. I am just being nosy.
When we bought our house it had proper 70s style venetian blinds in most windows. They looked so dated that I just assumed I would bin them and get curtains. And I did get curtains in most rooms but somehow still kept the blinds. They are versatile. Cut out a little bit of light, give some privacy but still let light in, pull down or put up quickly....
And also a pond with fish. Never had any interest before but we renovated it (was very old) and currently spend all our time on tadpole and baby fish lookout. I would never put one in a garden but I cant imagine not having it now.

An infared sauna. Seriously. And no we don’t live in a fancy house, just a basic 3 bed. The previous owners installed one in the garage. We didn’t want it, they could have dismantled it and so on but chose not to. It’s just for one person and we love it now, especially in winter.

30 years ago I moved into a brand new house with a dishwasher, I’d never needed one before and didn’t need one then, but I wouldn’t be without one now.

Oh wow. This is epic. It must be amazing in cold dreary weather

En suite to the main bedroom. And just the entire house because it was new build. Had never realised how awful old houses with character are. Inefficient, damp, and always something expensive needing work. New builds all the way.

Maraudingmarauders · 06/04/2026 07:33

A shower in the downstairs loo. It’s amazing for cleaning the dog after muddy walks. It used to be outside hose which she hated or a bucket in the kitchen which I hated.

Grimbleton · 06/04/2026 07:36

Air con. It’s like sleepy in an airy fridge in summer. I would go out of my way to install in any future homes.

14Sorrow22Bad · 06/04/2026 07:38

Steam oven. We’d never heard of them before. Now use it most days.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 06/04/2026 07:38

My last house had a waste disposal unit in the sink and it was great, def getting another when we have our kitchen redone.

dabdab · 06/04/2026 07:40

A second toilet, a linen cupboard, a deep butler’s sink with a little middle basin, and a kitchen that looks out on the garden.

Littletreefrog · 06/04/2026 07:42

A CCTV system. It's brilliant. We have already helped out neighbour after someone crashed into their parked car and it was all captured.

muddyford · 06/04/2026 07:46

Access to the garage from inside the house. So useful in bad weather.

We haven’t moved in yet but I’m looking forward to having an Aga. Had one growing up and it was so lovely and warm but never lived anywhere with one as an adult. Just hoping we can afford to run it! Although we’ll have no choice to begin with as it’s the only source of water and heating as well as cooking.

Simon the goldfish! We bought a house with a small pond, thought it was empty when we moved in and a few days later noticed a huge, sad looking goldfish in the murky water. Fast forward a 9 months and he now has a lovely clear pond, a load of toys and a girlfriend, Beau! Never saw myself as a fish owner but just about to go pick him up an expensive filter/ waterfall. Love ‘em both.

whirlyhead · 06/04/2026 07:57

A utility room which I love. No more washing machine in the kitchen! They do not belong there. Also a large Washington palm called Poe. I love him. And 2 outside egg chairs which are very comfie and I love swinging in them.

Geranium1984 · 06/04/2026 08:00

We have a really deep airing cupboard with the bouler and hot water tank on one side. It has washing line unstalled on the celining which can take a while load of laundry and dries overnight. No more washing frames in the house!!!
This us also my first house with an outdoor rotary line which I love in summer.

Galliano · 06/04/2026 08:06

Loads of things I love about my house but ability to hang washing outdoors but under cover is pretty rare and will really miss it if I move

theministerscat · 06/04/2026 08:08

@Mightaswellfaceityoureinmenopauselove Just wanted to say how much I love your Simon story! How lovely of you to look after him so well.

BewareoftheLambs · 06/04/2026 08:09

The log burner and the boot room, both absolutely essential now.

isthesolution · 06/04/2026 08:11

A bit boring but a rotary airer. Always just had a washing line before.

AnnaQuayRules · 06/04/2026 08:12

The larder.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 06/04/2026 08:15

A huge loft with boarding and shelves .

Doggymummar · 06/04/2026 08:16

A pullout breakfast bar. It looks like a regular drawer and I didn't see it till we moved in and were unpacking. When you pull it it extends out to about four foot long and has a leg tucked under for stability.

Ponds! We inherited 8 fish with the pond. I didn't want really them or the responsibility. But its weird how quickly you become attached. Genuinely cried when one died (it was very old). Very happy to see babies appear.

We are going to get one ourselves, we would have loved it if one had been left!

We were left an American fridge freezer with plumbed in water and ice dispenser, we’d never had one of these before. That fridge broke down after 3 months and we made sure the one we bought had the same, I don’t think I would be without one now

How lovely! Lucky Simon! I would love a pond but we live next to a river and there are too many herons and cormorants around to have fish.
