What came with your house that you now would not be without?

Is there anything you inherited when you bought your house that you would never have bought yourself but now cant imagine not having?
Hope that makes sense. I am just being nosy.
When we bought our house it had proper 70s style venetian blinds in most windows. They looked so dated that I just assumed I would bin them and get curtains. And I did get curtains in most rooms but somehow still kept the blinds. They are versatile. Cut out a little bit of light, give some privacy but still let light in, pull down or put up quickly....
And also a pond with fish. Never had any interest before but we renovated it (was very old) and currently spend all our time on tadpole and baby fish lookout. I would never put one in a garden but I cant imagine not having it now.

The original wooden shutters in the bay window in the front room. It’s a Victorian house and we had to restore some of the original features (like opening up the fireplace) but I’m so glad the shutters were left.

Massive wardrobes that aren't build in but look it. They store so much!

Also our attic was partially renovated, flooring, windows added. We don't use it for anything other than storage but it's great having a huge proper floored space for it.

They also left some lovely ceiling lights... thanks previous owners lol

The Aga, we’d never had one before but I’d never be without one now. They are so cosy in winter and keep the downstairs warm -too warm in Summer so we have to switch it off and use the electric oven/hobb. I had to relearn how to cook on one but I love it.

Not where I live now, but when I lived overseas, my flat had a huge wrap around balcony and I put a clothes line between two pillars. Due to the heat, washing dried in an hour on that line. Coming from cold, damp England, I loved that SO much.

The boot room and the tinkly bells.

TheLambtonWorm · 06/04/2026 08:46

The pantry and a hatch into the dining room from the kitchen.

plinkityplink · 06/04/2026 08:47

An apple tree. We’ve lived here 26 years and it’s the only thing we kept in the garden. It’s not very big but a prolific fruiter, I think it might have been planted when the first owner had the house so is about 40 years old.

Peclet · 06/04/2026 08:50

Underfloor heating. It is heaven in winter.

Peony1985 · 06/04/2026 08:54

A shed.
I had only lived in flats before this house.
I get why there is so much fuss about them now!

Loads of things I love about my house but ability to hang washing outdoors but under cover is pretty rare and will really miss it if I move

My BIL and SIL's old house had this. The previous owners had created a covered walkway from the backdoor to the shed from those plastic corrugated sheets. They had also hung a washing line the length of it as well as another washing line in the garden.

They moved last month and SIL misses it.

An infared sauna. Seriously. And no we don’t live in a fancy house, just a basic 3 bed. The previous owners installed one in the garage. We didn’t want it, they could have dismantled it and so on but chose not to. It’s just for one person and we love it now, especially in winter.

Opposite for us! We inherited one in the bathroom. The previous owners converted the airing cupboard into a sauna. We used it a couple of times as a novelty factor and now I use it to prove bread 🤣 We’re planning a bathroom refit and will rip it out. We’d rather have the cupboard space.

An Aga and a hanging pan rack.

Theseventhmagpie · 06/04/2026 09:30

I love the electric blinds and also the electric air drying rack which goes up and down to the ceiling and has a built in fan if you want to use that instead of the tumble dryer.

Buscobel · 06/04/2026 09:31

Utility room.

New build so the other things are ones we’ve installed. We’ve had a water softener in several houses and it was one of the first things we did in this one. It makes such a difference.

Hot water tap.
Perfect fit blinds

Theseventhmagpie · 06/04/2026 09:31

It’s called a Foxydry!

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 06/04/2026 09:35

A walk in pantry. It houses all of our food and drinks (save for whatever is in the fridge, bread items, fruit and coffee/tea), all the recycling and two freezers.

Starlight40 · 06/04/2026 09:37

An en suite, a dishwasher and a utility.

DeafLeppard · 06/04/2026 09:39

Fridge with plumbed in water dispenser and ice maker, and plate warming drawer.

Oh yes! Ours isn’t electric but we have a pulley air dryer which is fabulous for hanging clothes up out of the way. It looks really old so may have been in the house since it was built in Victorian times. I love the character features.

Twiglets1 · 06/04/2026 09:52

A south facing garden.

cheapskatemum · 06/04/2026 10:07

A sun room which faces south. It warms up beautifully with even a modicum of sunshine and on cold &/or windy, but bright days it’s so cosy. Added bonus is that it has a gorgeous view over fields. Plus I can watch the sun set from the side windows. It will be hard to find a house with anything like it when we move, but I’d compromise on a decent sized garden that faces SW, SE or due south & have one built on.

That makes sense. I don’t think I’d like it in the house if it took up storage space!

MrsAvocet · 06/04/2026 10:20

A dishwasher. We'd never had one before and I probably wouldn't have bought one but once I got used to it it became essential!
And the kitchen is really nicely designed. It is old and tired now and really needs replacing but I want to keep the layout exactly the same as it's just a really nice space to cook in - far better than anywhere else I have ever lived.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/04/2026 10:22

Awww, I want a Simon the goldfish now!
