What came with your house that you now would not be without?

Is there anything you inherited when you bought your house that you would never have bought yourself but now cant imagine not having?
Hope that makes sense. I am just being nosy.
When we bought our house it had proper 70s style venetian blinds in most windows. They looked so dated that I just assumed I would bin them and get curtains. And I did get curtains in most rooms but somehow still kept the blinds. They are versatile. Cut out a little bit of light, give some privacy but still let light in, pull down or put up quickly....
And also a pond with fish. Never had any interest before but we renovated it (was very old) and currently spend all our time on tadpole and baby fish lookout. I would never put one in a garden but I cant imagine not having it now.

Downstairs loo- we are downsizing and I’ve realised I will not compromise on having one having had one for 27 years in this house

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 06/04/2026 10:43

A second washing machine. The previous owners were downsizing so left one behind, and I brought ours with us. So useful to be able to do two loads at the same time.

Simon the goldfish! We bought a house with a small pond, thought it was empty when we moved in and a few days later noticed a huge, sad looking goldfish in the murky water. Fast forward a 9 months and he now has a lovely clear pond, a load of toys and a girlfriend, Beau! Never saw myself as a fish owner but just about to go pick him up an expensive filter/ waterfall. Love ‘em both.

So happy for Simon! I inherited 9 fish when I bought my new place last year. They had been well looked after and made instant family pets. Ds in particular loves them.
I like to take a tea up there, do a quick head count and watch them swim about their pond. We also inherited their posh filter from previous owners which makes a relaxing water tricking sound.

The 2 acre garden. Over half of which had been planted as a wildflower meadow with native species. Also the pond - teeming with life!

TheGriffle · 06/04/2026 10:57

We inherited a greenhouse. Would never have bought one in a million years but absolutely love it. We grew tomatoes, cucumbers, jalepenos, kale and radishes last year.

childfreebychoice · 08/04/2026 15:33

A dishwasher!

Ormally · 09/04/2026 14:25

A little structure that has 3 sides and about 1.2m of roof then a wooden frame coming out of that, though no climbing flowers on it or similar. Would never have built it but it stores garden chairs and so on most of the year, it has a couple of hooks on the wood and I tend to hang up things like washed sleeping bags to dry (when necessary), you can have a bbq under it if it's really windy or otherwise not great if you were just outside, candles can get put in some of the brick recesses, and there is a hammock chair that can be hung on the wooden frame so the wooden part makes the last arm of a triangle to brace it - my featherweight DD loves this for reading with legs dangling in warm weather. The most useful bit of the garden.

Two ovens. Yes really. Would never have installed that but obvs not about to remove.

Most of the time just use one, but OMG at Christmas (and Easter and any big roast-based family meal) - one is on v hot to make sure my roasters sausages parsnips Yorkshires are all done while the meat cooks gently. So much easier than having to take the meat out, turn the oven up and hope everything cooks in 30 mins.

clary · 09/04/2026 14:38

Ooh also - my north-facing kitchen at the back. Yes the garden is n facing too (but our old one was too) but the kitchen across the whole back of the house, all tiled, just makes the house so cool and delicious on a hot hot day.

Oddly tho it doesn’t seem to make it cold on a cold dsy. Just yummy aaaaah when you come home after a hot drive .

CeciliaMars · 09/04/2026 14:44

Loads of fitted cupboards..

ToadRage · 09/04/2026 14:57

Does the garden count? Despite my mothers best efforts I have never and will never be a gardener however I do like to sunbathe and we both love a bbq. Having our own enclosed outside space has been a game changer. It was entirely paved, on one level when we moved in and my husband has worked really hard to make it nice and accessible, a place we want to spend time.
If we ever move out I envy who will inherit my laundry chute or even if they will keep it. Whenever I mention it or show someone they always say 'that's a good idea' or 'I'd like one of them'.

Air con. It’s like sleepy in an airy fridge in summer. I would go out of my way to install in any future homes.

We had that in our flat, we didn't use it much to begin with but it was a godsend on hot summer nights. I definitely miss it.

newrubylane · 09/04/2026 15:09

The bird bath. It's right by our patio and I love watching the birds come and splash, but I don't think I'd ever have thought to buy one myself. It might come with us too our new house, or I'll buy myself one!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 09/04/2026 15:11

A wooden Pergola! The previous owners had a hot tub under it (which they tried to sell to us!) and it's turned out to be brilliant. Apart from the obvious shaded area to eat outside the fact that it has connected electricity means that during the summer I can work from there.

AuntieObnoxious · 09/04/2026 17:29

Aga, we moved in the summer and I love it. The kids also find cooking on it so easy so that’s a bonus, lots of fried egg sandwiches. It dries our clothes so quick as well.

Whoops75 · 09/04/2026 17:31

Utility room upstairs, with space to dry clothes and store bed linen and towels.

Nomura · 09/04/2026 17:35

We inherited a small green ceramic garden frog in the crevice of our garden wall when we moved in 12yrs ago. We left it where it was and enjoyed it as a feature sort of part of the fence. last yr we had some patio work done and afterwards, noticed our small frog had gone. Its dearly missed. We believe one of the work guys must have pinched it but don't want to accuse anyone since we have no proof.

Tupster · 09/04/2026 18:14

I second the ground floor shower room. Seemed like an odd thing to have when I first viewed the house, but it's so perfect for post sports showers, plus drying/airing kit so it doesn't clutter up the rest of the house.

BarbarianBabs · 09/04/2026 18:18

A garage. We don’t have a car, but we have a driveway and a garage. Not something we were looking for but this place happened to have both! Not many properties on the street have a drive or a garage so I am sure some neighbours think it’s wasted on us! We use the garage as a workshop and also have kettle bells and some thick mats in there and use it 5times a week as work out space so is definitely used and would be missed if we ever moved! I can’t imagine paying for gym membership now!

Sometimessmiling · 09/04/2026 18:26

A feeling of loving Ness.
My house was owned by a wonderful woman who raised millions for cancer patients in our local hospital (long before Calendar Girls). Her father was ill and over the next 20 years she raised millions and they named the cancer unit after her. When we arrived to see the house she wanted us to have it. Houses were at a premium in the area. She even bought my twins birthday gifts when we returned for a 2nd viewing. She died herself of cancer 2 years later but she has left a huge legacy in our health service. The house feels full of good vibes.

SnobblyBobbly · 09/04/2026 18:30

The loft ladder that folds up into the hatch. It’s not the most modern style but it does the trick!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/04/2026 18:33

Log burner, big pine kitchen table and a huge leather sofa. The house had had new windows fitted after the furniture was in and it wouldn't go out so had to stay in the house. I was going to chop it all up and get rid of it, but it has grown on me so much that I wouldn't be without it now. Never thought I'd want a log burner either but it heats the cottage so amazingly that I'm very grateful for it on the months when I can't afford to put the electric heating on.

Weirdconditionaltense · 09/04/2026 18:33

A big swathe of nettles in the field next to us
. I chuck apple cores, fruit stones, veggie peel etc in there as much closer than the compost heap. Noone will ever know..Unless I can be tracked down from this post.

Same here, I paid to have it taken apart to get it out when we renovated the house then paid again to get it put back together in the kitchen once we'd finished the reno 😂. Ours is going off next week I'm going to miss it so much.

The other thing that was left is the hallway and staircase carpet, its not what I would have chosen but its Axminster the quality is fantastic, its actually grown on me now.
