Realistic to find sunny 3-bed detached in Gloucestershire area under £800k?

Please help me with some advice on areas.
Im planning to move from Scotland to Gloucester/Worcs/Wiltshire area. I know the area to some extent, some areas more than others.

I’m looking for a three bed detached house with a nice private garden which gets lots of sun and light. I don’t want a generic grey interior or bland house with no character, but will have to make compromises. I don’t want to be overlooked, be too close to other houses or near a main road. Budget maximum £800,000 but that will stretch us to the limit.
Village/ small town setting preferred with good transport links if possible.
I would really like to be part of a community with things going on, so not a commuter town or somewhere full of second homes.

I have been trawling RM for literally years and rarely find anything within budget that isn’t needing loads of work or near a main road of a camp site or suchlike. Am I asking for the moon? I’m beginning to think we just can’t afford it.

Those are all Wilts though so poss a bit far from your Glos focus.

You may have to compromise somewhere though whether that’s location generally or specifically.

I think you need to narrow down your search area a bit, which main town/city would you like to be closest to?

I love Bath but it’s expensive . I don’t want to live in Bath, just near it. Worcester possibly, though I find it a bit limited. Cheltenham is OK.

It surely can't be that difficult, this is lovely, I know that spot very well, it's beautiful up there.

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/173036537

I saw that one but I think too big and top end of the budget.

So basically the Cotswolds?

I was going to suggest the Forest of Dean based on the thread title!

If you have been looking for hear then that means you can’t afford what you want! However maybe with prices falling you will be able to within your budget. Wishing you all the best.

First picture looks great, you think - It can"t be that cheap? Second picture has a more ramshackle feel with a couple of the out-buildings looking quite run down and a neighbour in close proximity, then it feels overpriced, more price drops to come on this one I think.

Stretching yourself to the limit of your finances is not a good idea in the present situation, many of the properties listed here will soon be tumbling in price I think, are you using PropertyLog or a similar app to track price moves on RM?

I’m not keen on Salisbury really.

There must be something in the Tetbury area for that kind of budget. Not too far from Bath or Wiltshire.

I think you’ll easily be able to find somewhere in Glos or Worcs. Have a look at Malvern.

Yes, I’ve been checking out Malvern too. I love walking there but not sure I’d want to live there.

Ledbury? Dymock?

MarieClairedelune · 14/03/2026 22:14

A few of those I had already favourited. I don’t want to live in Bristol or in Bath itself. Or in a semi or somewhere with no garden. Or somewhere that needs a lot of updating . That narrows the field .

A lot of those titles of the properties though are not in Bath as such, its just a postal geography
