…..anywhere in the country, where would you buy? It’s not a lot but it’s an opportunity I have been given, but I have no idea. Where would you buy?

You may be better off in a new build with a small mortgage. You may find the costs are lower than buying an older property outright.

Shared ownership so having to pay mortgage and rent and leasehold charges. No way

Plus Norfolk is nowhere near anywhere

The midlands and the NE would be my vote. I love those areas anyway

@Fangdango I can’t believe how much some of those properties have dropped in value in last twenty years! Do you know the reason? From £100 to £30K!

I am pretty sure that for some at least they are listing flat (now) against a house that was later converted! House prices haven't dropped around here - not shooting up, but rising like everywhere.

Powys/Gwynedd in Wales?

blublub · 05/11/2025 21:30

Gosh you’ve all given me so much to look at and think about, thank you so much.

I live in the midlands currently. Would love to live near the sea, but not a dealbreaker. Do love the do-upper terraces. Not bothered about a rough/dated interior as long as no damp/ structural issues.

shared ownership does seem a con to me.

I’m surprised you can get anything but a Quick Look and there’s an ok flat in lytham st Anne’s, that’s quite a nice place to live and it’s by the sea!

Is there anywhere you can buy a property for £60,000 now?

Port Glasgow. You could buy about 4 and still have change for a Lamborghini.

So you’re prepared to buy a do-er upper? Do you know how much renovation costs? You’d need to budget for new kitchen, new bathroom, electrical rewiring, sometimes installation of central heating, replastering or skimming ceilings and walls, possibly replacing windows and doors.

You wouldn’t get much change from 60k for the renovations alone and you’d have to live in it.

Grimsby!

Rhyl, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay would have lots of properties near the sea, though you will need to filter out the many retirement flats.

Here's an example https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/167489987#/?channel=RES_BUY

Check out this 1 bedroom flat for sale on Rightmove

1 bedroom flat for sale in Princes Street, Rhyl, LL18 for £60,000. Marketed by Simply Estates, Rhuddlan

If you want to live by the sea OP try Troon or Barassie in Scotland.

berlinbaby2025 · 05/11/2025 21:47

I was gifted a similar amount earlier this year and I too currently rent (have been for more than two decades!). I would love to be mortgage free but after months of research I've concluded that:

Flats don't hold their value nowhere near as much as houses. Also too many problems with leasehold properties.

As you say, shared ownership is a con - the worst of both worlds.

I wouldn't buy anywhere near the sea because of sea level risings / climate change. Some mortgage providers take this into account.

The areas where the affordable houses are just aren't great, so I've decided to do as some others have suggested and get a small mortgage for a two bed terrace. I figure I can always get a lodger to help out with the mortgage - could that work for you too?

HeatonGrov · 05/11/2025 20:57

Try Colne Lancs. Lots of stuff around the £60k mark. I posted one which is an auction property - but it will go for £60k. A lot are sold by the LA after the owner has gone into care and they like to shift them asap.

Yep - there's lots of choices in some of the mill towns - Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Huddersfield, Bradford.

Not electrics, but if it had storage heaters instead of a boiler and 1980s decor, or tenant trashed walls, yes. I can put in a new kitchen or bathroom to my liking over time, as long as the one in is functional or slap on paint and paper. I’m really not fussy. It’s just areas I am unsure of.

Of course it's enough to buy a property. Look on Rightmove move in Falkirk area and surrounds, several below that price.

Yea definitely central belt Scotland is worth a look, Falkirk, Bo'ness, Alloa. Over towards Ayrshire. Or Scottish Borders as well, places like Hawick.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 05/11/2025 22:01

It depends what kinds of places float your boat, but Rhyl is fairly horrible. A lot of the flats linked on this thread are retirement places or for over 55s, so potentially not suitable for the OP.
