…..anywhere in the country, where would you buy? It’s not a lot but it’s an opportunity I have been given, but I have no idea. Where would you buy?

No point looking at auction properties they will go for way over the prices but there are plenty of places in the UK to buy property for 60k

It shows such a narrow insular understanding of the country to not recognise that but you'll get tons of people on this thread OP not understanding that

I’m surprised you can get anything but a Quick Look and there’s an ok flat in lytham st Anne’s, that’s quite a nice place to live and it’s by the sea!

And nearly £3k a year to pay in service charge and ground rent .

It doesn’t say how long the lease is.

If you buy a flat OP the lease needs to be 100 years or close.

That looks like a bargain, looking a previous sold prices. Could be a lease length issue.

I have been kindly gifted the money. I have about 5k in savings for fees/moving. I currently rent, I can work from home in my current job anywhere and I would love the security of outright owning my own home.

You will bet a property for that amount in one of the Northern mill towns. But property there is cheap for a reason. Social problems, no decent jobs and poor transport links which make it hard to get to anywhere there is work.
Also that budget will get an old, Victorian mill workers property which are a black hole for maintenance (can you afford?) and impossible to heat.
Are you old enough to get an over 55s property?
Do you need to travel to work? Can you afford to run a car?

blublub · 05/11/2025 20:29

@Rexinasaurus that’s a retirement property unfortunately.

This flat is a retirement property

i would up the budget with a mortgage smaller than your current rent and get a good area that welcomes new people

blublub · 05/11/2025 20:30

@HeatonGrov i work from home, I have a car and with rent savings, yes.

A beach hut in north Norfolk. Or a static caravan ditto.

Victorian workers' terraces heat up fine, in my experience. Maintenance obviously depends on the house but if you've got a solid roof and don't need rewiring, you're good to start with. They can be good solid little homes. In the South Wales Valleys, they were often built by workers' cooperatives.

That’s shared ownership,

The price is for a 25% share, with rent payable on 75%.

Try coastal towns around the UK.

Not mine, I live in a south coast town and you would need nearly double that to purchase a beach hut.

blublub · 05/11/2025 20:33

There are properties for very little, but when you’re not local, who knows what a neighbourhood is really like. I know it won’t be Notting Hill but I also don’t want to move somewhere I’m in danger of getting stabbed.

County Durham. Some areas of Newcastle / Gateshead. Middleborough. Possibly Sunderland.

Might have to be a flat rather than a house, although I think there are absolutely places you can get a house for 60K.

Edited

That's an auction, it'll go for a lot more than that.

Shegotanology · 05/11/2025 20:35

Have a look in the S Wales valleys.

RandomMess · 05/11/2025 20:35

You could get a flat in Morecambe, I would consider a shared ownership though with you buying 75% you could the get something in one of the decent areas.

AgnesX · 05/11/2025 20:35

Florencesndzebedee · 05/11/2025 20:11

Probably quite a few inner city areas might have a cheap 1 bed flat for that but I doubt the area would be very nice. Maybe try Scotland, West Midlands, some parts of Leeds or Bradford.

It wouldn't get you very far in the nicer Scottish areas either. That said, it depends on what you want or need or are prepared to compromise on.

StewkeyBlue · 05/11/2025 20:35

People; check for auction / retirement or O55 / short lease / high service charges / shared ownership before you post a suggestion.

Maybe.

Town or country? North or South? Sea, wildlife, city life? Is it just you?

There are good options out there.
