…..anywhere in the country, where would you buy? It’s not a lot but it’s an opportunity I have been given, but I have no idea. Where would you buy?

I live in a Northern mill town and there’s nothing under £150,000.

Try Colne Lancs. Lots of stuff around the £60k mark. I posted one which is an auction property - but it will go for £60k. A lot are sold by the LA after the owner has gone into care and they like to shift them asap.

@Geranium879 that looks lovely! A dated terrace would be perfect, I could put my own stamp on it over time.

You'd get a flat in Aberdeen for that (flats have not held their value well)

Or in quite a bit of Aberdeenshire or Angus.

swingingbytheseat · 05/11/2025 21:00

you could get a 1 bed in Swansea just about

Park homes usually have incredibly restricted options for purchasing fuel/utilities which means you dont get the best deal, you also have to upgrade your home every so often, at the owners whim, owners can change and bring in all sorts of new rules and charges, not good value at all

Canal boat, even worse, a money pit. If you have temporary moorings, you have to move every few nights. To have a permanent mooring the cost is through the roof and thats without all the maintenance of it, needing it re painted in dry dock every so often, and although there are some periods of time in between its costly.

OP could get a mortgage for another 60k lets say and widen the options but I understand the freedom in just having the whole property without further costs except perhaps lease fees which are normal on flats, no avoiding them although some are higher than others.

This needs renovation. You’d be looking at about 50k minimum to bring it into a decent state to live in. The OP is crazy if she’s working and not retired to not get a mortgage and instead consider purchasing one of the hellholes on here

Definitely Lincoln. Lovely city and could definitely get a house outright for £60k

It’s an auction sale.

You need to have done all your checks / surveys / due diligence before bidding because if you win the auction that’s it. And auction properties usually go for higher than the stated price, often much higher.

Quite! Those little terraced houses are very sought after, as well.

Please be very, very careful with area.
I bought a house for just under 60k - 20 years ago. It was the "wrong" side of the main road, in an area regularly receiving "top 10 worst places to live" accolades. It was actually decent, with fabulous neighbours. A couple of streets further away, however......

Whilst there are still houses for under 60k in middlesbrough, they are not places I'd really want to live (that 2 bed terrace is now worth around 140k)

This is in lovely Looe in Cornwall- you might get it within budget at that guide price at auction.

That has huge damp problems, will need about 50k of work done and is an auction sale and will not got for the list price. Flats in Cornwall are highly sought after

I bought one for £40k 35 years ago and it’s probably worth £180k now. East Lancs - Colne, Burnley are cheaper but tend to be bought up by landlords and rented out.

Not so much in Colne!

South Wales Valleys worth a look. Be selective, look near public transport if you'll need it, but you can make a nice life here

@Fangdango I can’t believe how much some of those properties have dropped in value in last twenty years! Do you know the reason? From £100 to £30K!
