I've done the first coat but dd suggested doing the whole bannisters rather than just the handrail and ends.

What do you think?

The carpet will be coming off thr stairs for a runner with coordinating carpet on the landing.

Great paint job but I agree with your DD. It looks a bit dated sorry.

Badatmostthings · 15/07/2025 13:59

Love your hallway BTW!

If you do the whole bannister, it won’t match the panelling on the opposite side.

I painted the whole lot black with a runner & it a bloody nightmare! I have to clean it daily and there’s still always dust, finger prints and pet hair.

Painrelief · 15/07/2025 14:03

maybe use a photo editor to show the bannister all black and see which you prefer .

Oh, never thought of that. 😂

When you get tired of the black it will be an absolute nightmare to deal with! Keep it to a minimum, imho. Impossible to paint over , you have to get it all off or sanded to within an inch of its life.

This is a good point.

Apparently I'm out of images unless I upgrade to premium chat gpt

Why black? There's lots of lovely colours in your pictures you could pick out- teal for example.

Luckyblackcat13 · 15/07/2025 19:35

I painted mine like this 4 years ago and HATE it!!!! I’d def paint the whole thing black.

WonderingWanda · 15/07/2025 19:47

I prefer it with just the handrail black. I have the same banisters and they handrail is very 90's dark brown wood stain at the moment and I'm trying to decide whether to do a black handrail or dark grey. What paint did you use op?

Poobs2022 · 15/07/2025 19:49

We painted ours black but then the wall the other side is sage green. No regrets and I just try to ignore the dust and fingerprints. I have a whole heap of impractical a paints and ways I've decorated with a toddler and a dog 😂

purpleygrey · 15/07/2025 19:53

I would go all out and do the skirting and frames too!

GasPanic · 15/07/2025 19:56

I think it looks ok but it is the carpet that dates it.

You need a stair runner and rods. Not too hard to do - I did my own from Dunelm.

This looks absolutely horrendous. Whatever you do, don't do this!

Emotionalsupporthamster · 15/07/2025 20:03

I would paint it all white, but that’s not too helpful at this point I realise! But to answer your actual question I think it’d look better to keep it as is since you have the white panelling on the other side.

Papricat · 15/07/2025 20:21

Paint it white or sand the wood. No middle way.

Definitely this.

Brunocatmon · 15/07/2025 22:43

Gosh thank you for the pictures everyone. I appreciate the efforts.

I'm replacing the stairs carpet with runner and rods, i'm just trying to get all the painting done first.

The walls are not white, they're a kind of green stoney colour, it doesnt show well in pictures.

Keep it as it is! All black looks awful in those photos (though I appreciate the people posting them!)

SunnySideDeepDown · 16/07/2025 04:22

Leave it the way it is. All black will cheapen and darken it imo. I like it as it is. With a cool runner it’ll look great!

LoveWine123 · 16/07/2025 07:34

I wouldn’t do the whole banister in black. You could maybe match the black part you have already painted with some accessories like a mirror with a black frame or one of those thin tall tables over the radiator. What’s dating the hallway is really the carpet.
