I've done the first coat but dd suggested doing the whole bannisters rather than just the handrail and ends.

What do you think?

The carpet will be coming off thr stairs for a runner with coordinating carpet on the landing.

I like it the way it is. Once carpet gone it should come together

FestivusMiracle · 16/07/2025 07:38

All black looks good. But whatever you do, do not paint the skirtings at frames as someone suggested. That looks horrendous!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/07/2025 07:40

Leave it as it is.

Cavalierchaos · 16/07/2025 07:42

Why are people saying the carpet looks dated?! Looks absolutely fine to me.

I think you should paint the whole bannister black, OP. It's not my taste but it looks better based on the pictures someone posted.

HelloHattie · 16/07/2025 08:37

No don’t paint it all black. I would sand it or paint it white.

RantzNotBantz · 16/07/2025 08:40

The all-black is way too heavy, IMO.

Because it does.

Fully carpeted stairs aren't in at the moment. That photo looks weird because most of the other stuff, wood floor, paneling looks fresh and modern. But the carpet look definitiely isn't.

I think a runner would suit that staircase much better, especially if it was one of those jute runners with a black border to compliment the bannister.

OP glad to hear you are getting a runner. I would wait until you have it in place before doing any more. I think the full paint on the staircase would look too heavy.

Ours is all black (was like that when we moved in) and it looks alright but the dust is a nightmare, only needs a few flecks and its so noticable! I want to sand them down and redo but it's going to be a big job. I wouldn't choose it.

DuskyPink1984 · 16/07/2025 12:49

I agree with your daughter, I think you need to be a bit bolder with this.

Brunocatmon · 16/07/2025 14:24

Thank you everyone. I'll get the carpet up so that I can do the woodwork then go runner shopping.
