Turning a small room into a bedroom.

Also, this is a built in tv bookshelves combo, spanning the whole wall. No idea how to separate the end bit without taking the whole bloody thing down.

The item I regret buying is a wood burner! They are expensive to buy, ours cost £3,400 to buy, install & register.Seasoned wood is expensive at 0.45p- 0.75p a log.We get through loads in the winter. They look nice, but are dirty, dusty, high maintenance! I would not ever buy one again. If anyone on here is thinking of having a log burner installed? Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for, if you live in a old uninsulated house,it make take hours of using a log burner to heat a few rooms.Would cost more than central heating to run. You have to make sure, timber is seasoned, the right type of wood, that you burn to the correct temperature & make sure it's combusted.I thought I could just pop on a log, have a coffee & relax!

Ours was already here so we didn't have that expense but I hate the dust and the odd time my DH opens it too quickly and the room gets smokey. Also we get all our wood free. It is quite nice and cosy in the winter though as we have a small lounge.

I honestly wouldn't want one if I had to pay for it to be put in AND had to pay for wood! Would far rather use the CH!

I think panelling is going to be the polystyrene ceiling tiles of the future. Will be shown being ripped out on future house renovation programmes.

I absolutely agree. I really don't get this trend!

Well but panelling isn't a fire risk like polystyrene

Dymaxion · 06/06/2025 21:46

Also wish I had white appliances instead of shiny silver metal, it shows every fingerprint. I think white will come back in eventually even though right now it's horribly old fashioned.

It annoys me that we are so boring when it comes to colour and appliances and sanitary ware, I would love a turquoise washing machine or bath !

Hlglu56 · 06/06/2025 21:54

I hate my oak worktops! Faded and marked. They need sanding and reoiling but it’s a messy job to do. People come over and make a drink and it marks the wood when they put the glass down. I also find dough gets stuck on them if I’m making bread etc. Not great for messy cooks like me.

TheGander · 06/06/2025 22:17

Funny how an entire nation got gashlighted into thinking that on an often rainy and dark North Atlantic island painting one’s interior grey was a good idea. Remember scrolling through Rightmove and every other property had been painted grey, as if that was a shortcut to style? Ugh.

Unpaidviewer · 06/06/2025 22:32

Twiggy bits in a vase with fairy lights and brown "feature" walls. At the same time I also had a red matchy, matchy kitchen set.

Kbroughton · 06/06/2025 22:47

Bi fold doors along two walls. Way too open, pulling the blinds took ages. felt weird when they were all wid3 open and fleis just went right in. And a bird once. And the people's cats. So ended up only ever having one open. Just did too many and felt exposed! I moved later but I would never have bifold doors. Have french doors now and they are fab.

Kbroughton · 06/06/2025 22:50

But i LOVE my log burner. It's really easy to clean, just empty the tray and hoover round the back every so often. Never gets smokey, have a house built in 1984 with new windows and rarely have the heat on apart from very dead of winter as heats the whole house. Modern log burners are great.

Agree! If it's smokey or taking hours to heat a room then you need to get it checked and learn how to light it and keep it going hot a low.

For those of your saying black taps…. We are having our kitchen fitted shortly and were leaning towards a black sink/ draining board, and tap, are they awful for marks and stains etc? Maybe I need to rethink.

We've got black taps in our bathrooms. At some point the black will start to peel off or scratch showing the metal underneath. And yes, water marks are a problem. We have a cookertap in black in the kitchen, so far no issues, but we chose a white sink.

I wish I had the joists replaced in my bedroom and the kitchen/diner when I had the chance 2 years ago. 40 years of really heavy men stomping on half size joists has made for a seasick experience on both floors. The whole house was ripped apart back then when I bought it and that is my daily regret. Painted over the grey (we are in Ireland, the fucking sky is grey, why would you have your house amplifying it?) But the floors aggravate me daily.

Grey floors

Dexies · 06/06/2025 23:52

Such an interest thread, I’m trying to sell my house at the moment and the valuer advised me to replace 4 year old beigey tan wool slub carpets in great condition with new grey ones to entice buyers, I’m a little conflicted now. Any advice ?

Beautifulweeds · 06/06/2025 23:54

Nothing! I look back at the different styles throughout the decades while growing up as well and just see them as a sign of the times.

The swirly orange and black carpet we had while dressing in front of the fireplace, memories.

My student bedrooms in the 1990s, awful decor, plastered it with photos and posters, memories.

Buying our first house together, terracotta, green, yellow, purple bathroom, yes memories.

Going to modern bland beige to then bland grey, memories yes but now we're all grown up with DC and a mix of colours all to what we like

So yeah, maybe a bit of cringe but then no, styles reflected living at the time and personally it's so sad people are like sheep and just think whatever they do is modern.

Now I prefer classic evolvement, add to your house gradually according to yoir own taste.

No right or wrong and no one else should be judgemental.

Grey. Everything fecking grey. Hate my kitchen colour! Painting costs a bomb, it's cheaper to buy new doors.

DS's fiancee painted the kitchen cupboards herself when they moved into their first home together last year. They look amazing! Mind you, she is excellent at diy.

I don’t think that’s a good use of your money. If you look on RightMove, so many houses look exactly the same with grey everything. As long as the carpet is clean, colour won’t matter.

Oblomov25 · 07/06/2025 04:54

I've just bought a grey sofa!

Mackerelfillets · 07/06/2025 05:02

Paid a fortune for a super matt dark blue kitchen. Looked amazing at first. SHOWS EVERY MARK. Fingers prints mainly and you CANNOT get it off. Can't use normal kitchen spray, got to be a special sponge, or microfiber cloths with washing up liquid but it doesn't work. Got them to put handles on as originally handless but its no better. Constant source of irritation. Seriously considering respraying with a gloss paint. That would cost about £5,000.

DarcMode · 07/06/2025 05:14

When we moved in to our last place, the previous owners had all the bathroom taps, including in the bath, as these huge flat right-angled handled ones, a bit like this but stick out more.

Despite lots of vigilance and warnings, our kids have all had minor cuts and scrapes from them in the bath! Poor DS had a plaster on his buttcheek from standing up and it cut into him (very shallow cut but still).

Black LVT in the kitchen. Every single mark shows up.
