Turning a small room into a bedroom.

Grey. Everything fecking grey. Hate my kitchen colour! Painting costs a bomb, it's cheaper to buy new doors.

For those of your saying black taps…. We are having our kitchen fitted shortly and were leaning towards a black sink/ draining board, and tap, are they awful for marks and stains etc? Maybe I need to rethink.

I have seen them look awful in hard water areas. One friend made the mistake of waterfall black taps in a hard water area and was changing them within six months. Not sure how they would perform in softwater areas.

IME plain black woodwork or surfaces shows every mark around the home, more stippled patterns (eg dark granite) are more forgiving if you want those tones.

My black sink and taps don't bother me as much as the ones in my bathroom, I have black handles in the kitchen so they match. Possibly because a wipe down/clean the kitchen taps much more often than my shower heads.

Definitely light grey carpet. Carpet in general actually. Only have it on the stairs and landing but it shows up every bit of sock fluff and cat hair and never looks entirely clean. I was trying not to make the space too dark as it doesn’t get a lot of light. Not a good idea and will be ripping it out soon 😁

Agree with the too many spotlights post upthread. It wasn’t us that put them in, but our bedroom has at least ten, and it’s not a big bedroom. Didn’t realise it at the time, but they were positioned to strategically light the enormous fitted furniture that was there when we moved in. Now there’s no sense to the layout of them and it bugs me every time I notice 😁

So awful, having mine replaced as soon as I can afford it.

Notyetthere · 05/06/2025 11:47

For us it's a big one. We did a loft conversion with a large dormer at the back. But we really should have tried with planning permission to also get a hip to gable done too. My sons bedroom would be amazinglying bigger and my office would be also have worked as a large single bedroom when needed. It would be very expensive and disruptive to get it done now but I do wonder some times

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 05/06/2025 13:00

I ripped out a really awful fitted cupboard. Then realised it was original. And am having a new one put back in!

I have a black tap in my kitchen and haven't had any problem keeping it black. I live in a very hard water area too. I think it looks great!

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/06/2025 13:16

Mine is to do with the building work we had done rather than the decor.

Not getting a light installed in the loft.
Not paying more to get the existing structure underpinned and an RSJ which would have meant we could have had a room without a central support pillar.

minipie · 05/06/2025 13:18

Grey here too. Some of the grey I still like - our kitchen is a pretty pale blue/grey and it’s nice, I’m not anti all grey. But the mid grey hallway was just depressing - have recently repainted in off white and it’s so much better even if it does show all the marks

I have a couple of other regrets but they’re not trends, more could’ve made better use of space.

Buying this house. 🤣

Knocking a wall down. Id have actually preferred 2 small rooms than one big room. Now we have no privacy and we're all under each other's feet all the time. Plus its drafty and somehow gives us less furniture options.

I always wanted bifold doors (we cant in this house anyway) but I suspect I'd have regretted those.

Edited

I regret putting up a wall to make 2 small rooms 😂

This is upstairs though - split one large bedroom into a single bedroom and a home office because needed a home office and couldn't lose a bedroom. Wish we'd have just moved into an adequately sized property instead.

idrinkandiknowthings · 05/06/2025 13:26

Putting white laminate down in the hall and living room. A pain to keep clean and I'm a lazy cow 😂

User415373 · 05/06/2025 13:27

Not really a trend but our house is old and so when we renovated we used wood-stained doorframes, skirting and picture rails etc. It all looks so orange now and I absolutely hate it but just the thought of sanding and painting it all is too much!
Also we bought new dark green velvet sofas. The only new thing we've ever bought! I now think they're too dark and limit my decorating options in the room they're in.

BigDahliaFan · 05/06/2025 13:31

Shiny white floor tiles in the bathroom - look clean for 10 seconds after cleaning - then poof! Covered in dust/hairs/ etc etc again.

We got the numerous spotlights the previous owners put in the bedroom ceiling taken out - it makes me happy still that they are gone.

not getting outside lights fitted at the front of the house when we had the builders in. In winter it can be treacherous getting up the dark steps to the front door.

Grey carpets but I only had them fitted a year ago. I wanted cream/beige but the fitter said no as he’s was worried about marking them while fitting. I stuck with him as I’ve had him do various houses over the past 15 years.

I regret the panelling I did in a bedroom too but thankfully it’s one wall and I never did any more rooms.

Why you letting someone else tell you what to do in your own home

In the minority, my house is mostly grey and I love it.

I love grey too. I find it really relaxing. Bright/dark colours stress me.

Profpudding · 05/06/2025 08:55

I’m so glad the grey trend is dying. My daughter’s house looks like a prison yard.

My neighbour’s house does too. I mean literally every single thing etc is grey!

WordsFailMeYetAgain · 05/06/2025 14:30

Black worktops in the kitchen. Need wiping down every 5 seconds to get rid of the dust. Knew this and stupidly put in a black kitchen sink so now have that to deal with too! When will I learn.

Thankfully didn't go down the grey route or it would redecorating everything too.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 05/06/2025 14:32

@LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken
i like stripy stair carpet ! 100% with you re. The white wooden (look) blinds though they show every mark and my kitchen one is really wide as well takes ages to clean 😢

I have a black sink. It's composite and shows every bloody water mark. I'm constantly wiping down. We have really hard water where I live so might not be so bad with softer water.

We’ve got a downstairs shower room done in black fittings. You get what you pay for with black and my plumber warned me about this, so I did a ton of research and went for higher stuff (Crosswater). They look great and have held up really well because they’re immersion-coated rather than painted finish. Quick wipe with antibacterial spray or soapy water is all that’s needed. The cheap ones will flake and show up marks really badly and you basically can’t use any cleaning product on them.

Fourfurrymonsters · 05/06/2025 14:35

@WordsFailMeYetAgain I had a white composite sink in our kitchen and had to swap it out for a ceramic one. It drove me nuts and never looked clean, always slightly “stained”.

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/06/2025 14:35

I went mad with border wallpaper in my first house. Literally every room had a border somewhere (high up, dado rail height, etc). In my house now, I have no border wallpaper at all - think I maxed out, lol.
