Turning a small room into a bedroom.

For those of your saying black taps…. We are having our kitchen fitted shortly and were leaning towards a black sink/ draining board, and tap, are they awful for marks and stains etc? Maybe I need to rethink.

We have a black sink and dark metal taps in the bathrooms and kitchen, but we have a water softener. I wouldn’t do it without.

We have a black tap and a black composite sink with drainer. No issues at all but we live in a soft water area

We got curved arch and love it

We had a four bed house with Venetian blinds in all the rooms. We changed the kitchen ones to day and night blinds, but I absolutely hated the amount of time it took to clean those blinds. They were big windows too, so heaving up the blinds to get at the windows was a pain.

Now we have day and night blinds, roller blinds and Roman blinds. So much easier to go over with the handheld vacuum.

What are day and night blinds?

Blinds2go have them. Horizontal blinds that you can adjust to allow more or less light, or to raise like other blinds.

Shiny white floor tiles in the bathroom - look clean for 10 seconds after cleaning - then poof! Covered in dust/hairs/ etc etc again.

We got the numerous spotlights the previous owners put in the bedroom ceiling taken out - it makes me happy still that they are gone.

not getting outside lights fitted at the front of the house when we had the builders in. In winter it can be treacherous getting up the dark steps to the front door.

Try solar lights at the front of the house. Super easy to fit.

The item I regret buying is a wood burner! They are expensive to buy, ours cost £3,400 to buy, install & register.Seasoned wood is expensive at 0.45p- 0.75p a log.We get through loads in the winter. They look nice, but are dirty, dusty, high maintenance! I would not ever buy one again. If anyone on here is thinking of having a log burner installed? Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for, if you live in a old uninsulated house,it make take hours of using a log burner to heat a few rooms.Would cost more than central heating to run. You have to make sure, timber is seasoned, the right type of wood, that you burn to the correct temperature & make sure it's combusted.I thought I could just pop on a log, have a coffee & relax!

Not our current house, but the stenciling I added to the walls in a previous place. Others loved it, but it was never quite right for me.

Panelling (as in, proper panelling not those square tic-tac-toe board monstrosities) is timeless. It’s been around hundreds of years.

Proper panelling, yes, of course. But not the nail gunned/No Nails glued MDF stuff that every Instagram "interior designer" is affixing to every room in their house.

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 05/06/2025 23:40

Not my choice, but in a previous rented flat, a gloss kitchen. Every single mark, finger print, water drip and so on showed, I was endlessly cleaning the fronts of the doors.

Edit - I’m assuming the current trend of dark blue kitchen cabinets (either fully or with white/grey top cabinets) will feature on a future version of this thread, much like grey decor?!

changed a rectangle arch from one room to another into a curved arch!! It was many years ago though. Looks so old fashioned now so going to change it back to exactly how it was!

Oh dear I put more curved arches in…..

SingleAHF · 06/06/2025 00:11

Red and yellow ceramic tiles in a chequered pattern all over one bathroom wall. Now feel garish, and dictate the colour of the other walls, floor, rugs and accessories.Too expensive to remove.

SingleAHF · 06/06/2025 00:16

Painting kitchen doors instead of changing them. Constantly peeling off and need touching up weekly.

dontgiveafuck · 06/06/2025 00:39

Mirrored shower it took days to do lasted 3 days and about 20 mins to rip down.

LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken · 05/06/2025 04:32

Striped stair carpet.

Black taps in bathroom - show every mark.

White wood venetian blinds. Cba with the dusting.

Definitely my biggest regret about Venetian blinds …absolutely hate them ,look lovely but get so dusty and am still trying to find the mental energy to clean them!!10 years later 😭

SallyDraperGetInHere · 06/06/2025 00:46

I’m nodding along with … spotlights, and open plan. If I’ve the extractor fan on, and the kettle boiling, and the radio or music, it completely dominates downstairs. Also, I put a central light in the living room, thinking the previous owners were completely mad to not have one, and in a low-ceiling room, it was a mistake. I’m slowly painting (badly) to bring colour back to my greige walls.

Stinkbomb · 06/06/2025 01:11

Kitchen/diner, separate living room and a separate conservatory too (used as a room on its own for DD)
living room, we have just decorated with emerald green , white & grey

Stinkbomb · 06/06/2025 01:13

Ooh no, the big light is only used when I’m working at home, all other times we have lamps - far more ambient lighting.

Could you consider putting some bathroom panels over them? Or those tile stickers?

LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken · 06/06/2025 02:07

I think anything that is a TikTok trend is best avoided. All those MDF nail gun fake panelling with caulk are going to be ripped out and make such a mess.

I am old enough to remember when we were all rushing to B&Q etc to buy a wallpaper border for halfway up the wall, or just level with the ceiling.

When looking for second hand taps on eBay and Gumtree, black ones were in abundance. Days it all, a lot of regrets out there.

Love ours, literally pop a log in and relax.

We have wood delivered by a reputable supplier. He asked for the size of the stove, type and size of the room before advising on the type of wood we needed.

With the right temperature/burn setting, the logs burn for ages.

Belfast sink. Oak kitchen worktops.

so fucking hard to keep nice.

I’m considering oak worktops. What makes them so hard to maintain? Is it day to day cleaning or long term maintenance?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 06/06/2025 05:03

Agree with cheap panelling, dust galore.

Wanted to do a border above the dado rail, but reconsidering now.

Gold taps in our old house, they were trying to imitate brass taps, but had to be replaced as looked cheap.

The beauty of brass is in the aging.

It depends on how hard your water is. We have a black sink and tap in the kitchen and black fittings in a shower room and no issues at all with marking
