I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

Well, oddly, the building next door to us was an Indian restaurant for years, then the owners sold, and it’s being converted into two apartments. The builder who bought it invited me in before they set to work in case I wanted any glasses etc. All the carpets, curtains, soft furnishings were exactly as before, and certainly couldn’t tell by smelling that anyone had ever cooked a curry in there.

commercial kitchen have massive kitchen vent systems.

Haha - no but it seems I've hit a nerve with my comment. 😁

wouldn’t buy:
In a new build estate
Near a busy road
Next to a school

Property on an untreated private road full of potholes and cracks. The cost of putting down tarmac is crazy so while trying to raise the funds every journey does a number on your suspension

BigSkies2022 · 24/05/2025 21:16

Plastic windows.
Concrete roof tiles.
En suites.

Edited

Potholes are the worst. Not only for driving over but when you have one in front of the house the small stone chips from other cars going over it constantly chipping and dinging your car!

Honestly some of these answers! If you turn down a house because of things that are so easy to change you all must leave in a very different part of the country where you have many houses to chose from that don’t fly within the week

Not me - I have one in my utility. My kitchen sink is black and my kitchen is dark green with lots of oak. I live in a farmhouse but not a white ceramic sink in sight

Interesting thread. My house has an open plan kitchen/living room. It was very handy when the kids were small and I could cook and keep an eye on them. I hate it now, though. It's impossible to heat and I find it hard to relax unless the kitchen part is tidy. My next house will have a kitchen I can shut the door on and a cosy small sitting room.

Colts627 · 24/05/2025 21:23

I wouldn’t live in any house where I could see another house when I was looking out either front or back.

I think this is a good point, through different life stages some options wouldn’t be what your heart would go for but situationally (ie kids, aging / mobility issues etc) it becomes necessary

These are a no for me:
Shared drive or other shared access
No side access
No off road parking
Steep plot (either sloping garden or lots of steps to the front)
Unsecure garden (eg with hedges not fencing or nothing)
No garden
No downstairs loo
Artex in multiple rooms

Interestingly other peoples nos are a yes for me:
Solar panels (to save money on bills)
Artificial grass (so long as decent quality - I love mine)
Garden room (so long as there is still some garden left).

They look fine. You can see the ten on the front. The others are on our garage/annexe and are not visible. The panels are black and merge well with roof. I am rather glad you would not buy my house. I live in a particularly nice rural area and what makes it special are the people who are warm, welcoming and old humoured. I suspect you might not fit in well.

SnakesAndArrows · 24/05/2025 21:32

Must have a garden. I don’t care what it’s like, as long as it gets sun in most of it. I can rip up the astroturf, remove the actual turf, and remove the paving to replace with lot so lovely plants.

Must have parking for two cars.

Must be on a quiet street - a main road would be a dealbreaker.

DH says it mustn’t be pebble-dashed or rendered, but I don’t care much.

Must have, or must have room for a toilet on the living floor and the bathroom must be on the bedroom floor.

Kitchen must be on same floor as living room.

I would like some of the things people hate though. Solar panels and a conservatory would be great.

I hate the word 'cosy'. I want every room in my house to be the exact opposite. Good job we all like different things!
