I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

Talk about first world concerns! Many people, including most British under 30s, would just be very grateful for a roof over their heads which they owned.

Not really what we’re discussing though is it, you can make your own thread about that should you wish :)

Annoyingly I have one and a half of the things that annoy me in my own house 🙄No bathroom upstairs (mine only has an en-suite) which is fine now DC are young but I imagine it’s going to be annoying when they get older
A conservatory that takes up half the garden (really want to knock mine down!)
Noisy, inconsiderate or rude neighbours (it’s stressful having to see people on a daily basis who annoy the fuck out of you!)
Bonus no. 4 - no storage space

KateDelRick · 24/05/2025 12:26

A house where they had several dogs.
We didn't complete the viewing on one because of the smell 🤮

SwedishEdith · 24/05/2025 12:27

After my first house, I knew I wanted
A hall
Side access
South or west facing garden (did already have that).

many of things could be changed so wouldn’t put me off buying the house.

LadyOfACertainAge · 24/05/2025 12:28

I think my absolute deal breaker is if there is no off road parking or excess road space for the houses. I’ve seen too many friends struggle, basically can’t leave house after tea time if they want to be able to return and park within 15 minute walk. Or end up with neighbour parking wars.

Hoolihan · 24/05/2025 12:28
  • North facing garden
  • Conservatory
  • No public transport

Oh god yes Ive seen about parking diagrams on here in my time to put me off for life 🤣🤣🤣

Most of the houses I've bought have had many of these things because the reality of where I live and what I earn means I can never find the perfect house and there is always some element of compromise.

InterruptingRabbit · 24/05/2025 12:30

Astro turf

Oh my god. They had 3 big hairy dogs. They were put in the garden for the viewing, fair enough, but obviously had the run of the house.
It stank of dogs.
We tried to calculate how much it would cost for a deep clean etc and maybe just pull up the carpets, but we just couldn't complete the viewing, so left.

Private road one is interesting as some people love this - what’s the main down sides?

Because of a friend’s experience when a storm washed away part of the road and the astronomical cost for her to fix it.

Deal breakers:

On a busy road
On a flight path
Close to dodgy looking properties

LPG instead of mains gas

Oh my gosh that’s literally sooo bad! I love dogs and would say I’m quite tolerant of people being a bit let’s say not as clean as me but wow that’s bad.

Holy shit! Yes. I also not sure I would like the thought of any neighbour disputes not being able to be sorted or gone through the council.

What’s the big deal about no side access?

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 24/05/2025 12:32

Why on earth would you turn down an otherwise-ideal house for the sake of a shed or some AstroTurf that you can easily and cheaply get rid of?!

I don't mind dogs. My sister has one, and her house never smells. She gets him regularly groomed and bathed though.

OP, why no solar panels??

I spent two years as a FTB looking and ended up with a lot of compromises from 'hard no's' at the start. I've got a north facing garden, new build, no separate shower, no dining room. But I'm much happier here than I thought I'd be - I make it my own, and the energy bills for gas & electric are under £40 a month.

My next house will have to be:

  • not terrace. Ideally detached but realistically semi-detached
  • not north facing garden
  • bath and separate shower (or possible in the space)
  • must have easy visitor parking
Kathbrownlow · 24/05/2025 12:33
  • Any shared driveway/passageway with neighbours
  • a Union Jack/England flag on display in neighbour's garden

I think the flight path depends, I’ve lived on a very busy flight path before (ditto next to a very busy road) and got used to both noises. I think it depends on what tolerance is.

I remember watching a ‘Tonight with Trevor McDonald’ style programme about how most were a scam and it’s put me off
I also HATE the look of them! Maybe I’m being silly.
