I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

They look fine. You can see the ten on the front. The others are on our garage/annexe and are not visible. The panels are black and merge well with roof. I am rather glad you would not buy my house. I live in a particularly nice rural area and what makes it special are the people who are warm, welcoming and old humoured. I suspect you might not fit in well.

Oooooh, salty! 😂 Did I hit a raw nerve? Are your solar panels butthurt?! 😆

I live in a very friendly rural village with a warm and close community, and I 'fit in' perfectly fine ta. 😎 It's a beautiful area. No ugly solar panels anywhere! 😖

Would be hilarious if you were real life neighbours 🤣

😂 I doubt it, as no-one in my cosy rural village has 20 ugly solar panels on their roof 😆

I am bemused at how offended people are (certain posters) at people insulting solar panels and calling them ugly. If they are happy with them, why do they care?!! 😆 I couldn't give a shiny shite what people think of me, and what I like/have on my house/in my garden etc etc...!

Tiny or north facing garden
Heavy road noise and no parking
For the house a door opening straight into the living room and no storage.

Done living in cities and live in the countryside now, so with cheap house prices (not UK) can have space. Could not go back to road noise and would miss my garden too much.

What’s wrong with solar panels? Looking at getting them, though have a very old house. Further south than the UK so makes a lot of sense here. Switching over to solar power for various things around the garden and love it.

I don’t have artificial grass, but you do know why people do get it, don’t you ? And it’s better than paving over the area.

My elderly mum has a lawn, but it’s beyond her now, and is a source of huge worry.

My neighbour has artificial grass, it looks good, and she now doesn’t have to worry about trying to cut it, as she could barely manage both of her lawns before and couldn’t get a Gardner.

Again it’s better than being paved over, and causing localised flooding.

Where the front door opens onto the street…I need a little distance, a drive way or at least a front garden

It’s absolutely not better than paving, sorry
it’s bloody plastic and awful for the environment
it holds smells like dog piss and burns your feet-horrible tacky stuff sorry!

What’s the problem with a north facing garden. Ours is but gets sun from mid afternoon onwards, so I don’t understand what the issue is.

Are you OK? 🤔 You seem irrationally angry, for very little. I literally just said that I think solar panels are ugly, and you're acting like you genuinely hate me, and I am the nastiest person in the world. I hope you're OK. Flowers Your reaction to what I said is unnecessarily vicious and unkind.

They might have PV slates instead. If the house has cheap imported slate on the roof, they usually blend in quite well. Not so much with Welsh slate.

Interesting thread. My house has an open plan kitchen/living room. It was very handy when the kids were small and I could cook and keep an eye on them. I hate it now, though. It's impossible to heat and I find it hard to relax unless the kitchen part is tidy. My next house will have a kitchen I can shut the door on and a cosy small sitting room.

We had that experience - liked open plan with very young kids then started to dislike it.

Moved - due to work - to house with lots of rooms and doors - kichen dinner length of one side of house - other split into two rooms so office in day and game room at night and back sitting room small but opens into garden so does feel bigger.

First thing estate agent said we could knock though the two smaller rooms easily and maybe do something to make kichen open plan as well - not sure that would have been possible but certainly not what we wanted.

I do think the layout helped teen years be less fraught - 4 bed so they have their own rooms and can get away from each other or us downstairs as well. It was really useful in covid.

We'll likely move again due to work but it wouldn't be a bad house to grow old in with downsatirs shower and bathroom.

I am actually doubting that with your OTT reaction to a random person saying they think solar panels are ugly. You have taken it very personally. Very strange. Why are you so angry? Confused Why do you care what some random stranger on the internet thinks?

I will leave it there, and won't communicate with you anymore on this thread. I can see you're upset. I don't know why, but I can see that you are.

You can change most things about a house .

on the basis of that, I wouldn’t buy a house that was :-
In an area with a lot of graffiti or street rubbish
near factories (been/ am there 😞)
on a main road
no side access (current)
on a hill
too far from local amenities (I prefer walking distance)
would not buy a mid terraced house (current)
a house that I could not have a drive
stairs in the living room
tiny windows / poor natural light (current)
Main bathroom with small or no window
no hall way (current)
large tree nearby
untidy neighbours gardens

Open fires
wood-burning stoves
aga
plastic doors and windows
north-facing garden
busy road
paved-over garden
artificial grass
large tree in garden or nearby garden
unsavoury looking neighbours
loud music from nearby

Why aga? Our current house had one when we moved in, knew nothing about them at the time but omg I would never be without it now - it’s basically our oven, hob, toaster, clothes drier & heating system - literally my favourite appliance in the house 🤣

Plastic windows.
Concrete roof tiles.
En suites.

Why do people hate en suites? Confused

We have an Aga in the kitchen in our cottage. I love ours too! Smile

Where I live we aren't allowed to have the wheelie bins outside the front of the houses, except for bin day.
I wouldn't want to be wheeling bins through the house.

I don’t have side access ,
and so my children wheel their bikes through my already tiny house and I hate it so much 😣

slowthisbirddown · 24/05/2025 22:14

Bit of NIMBYism going on on this thread re HMOs and social housing. Everyone has to live somewhere.

They look cool 😦😦😦

I feel a little of the green eyed monster coming out with your ott reactions to solar panel posts 😂 I'm sure you'll ge able to afford them one day Wyr!

For me it would things that couldn't be changed....being on a busy road, dodgy looking neighbours and on s flight path. However you feel about solar panels and fake grass, they can easily and cheaply be removed if not to taste.

TheOrphanTree · 24/05/2025 22:15

Stairs coming out of the living room
No driveway
No outside space

People don’t wanna be doing a poop right next to their sleeping partner lmao
