I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

-With artificial grass

-Near a busy road

-Near a take-away shop, school or pub

-Next door neighbours with rubbish/junk in their gardens, English flags or caravans

-No bathroom window.

PorgyandBess · 24/05/2025 20:38

Would people really not buy a house with plastic grass? It’s easy to rip up, I’d imagine. Obviously no one likes it, but I can’t think it’d be a deal breaker.

Maybe people selling their houses with plastic grass should be aware how off putting it is to many.

Ladamesansmerci · 24/05/2025 20:38

Without a drive
With scary dogs like Pitbulls living next door
With no downstairs toilet

HeartandSeoul · 24/05/2025 20:40

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I couldn’t buy a house where the front door leads straight into the lounge/front room.

Commonsense22 · 24/05/2025 20:41

-tiled floors in the living spaces

  • open plan kitchen / living space

-concrete yard

  • concrete walls
  • on a busy road
  • no parking
  • rendering on the outside

Oh my god. They had 3 big hairy dogs. They were put in the garden for the viewing, fair enough, but obviously had the run of the house.
It stank of dogs.
We tried to calculate how much it would cost for a deep clean etc and maybe just pull up the carpets, but we just couldn't complete the viewing, so left.

Dogs, Nooooooo!
Years ago we were driving through a village we had never visited before and spotted a gorgeous really classy house in its own large grounds. It was chocolate -box perfect and we couldn’t wait to view it. On viewing day, we were so excited, having just sold our house and making arrangement to release funds for a new one. We were taken around the side of the house into the designer garden, complete with beautiful summer house, ideal for entertaining (and perfect for sewing afternoons for me!)
By this time, in my mind, I had already moved in!
We were taken into the house by the front door and that was when the stench hit us. Dogs. Five apparently, although the owner said she had sent them to kennels for the viewings. The whole house has tasteful expensive carpets and exquisite designer wallpapers, as well as fashionable drapes. (This was the 70s). On the way home, we were discussing the house, mostly me, my husband was oddly quiet. When I had calmed down after describing what I wanted to do with it, I said that the carpets would have to be cleaned to get rid of the dog smell. That was when my husband told me that the smell would be in the wallpaper, drapes, carpets and any furniture the owner had said she was leaving (as it was made for the house) and they would all have to be professionally cleaned and probably fumigated. When we properly looked into the cost of making the house smell lovely, it was soon apparent we would almost need another mortgage and the house was big. Getting rid of the smell would be a step too far.
That was about 50 years ago and I am still disappointed that we were sensible and didn’t buy it. We did the right thing though!

UPVC patio doors as porch doors

I have that as one of my pet hates too!
Has anyone mentioned odd statues and garden gnomes? We once found, to our cost that the previous owners had left them behind (they thought we’d like them!) There were five and they were heavy and ugly!

anotherside · 24/05/2025 20:53

Artificial grass? Just get rid and put real grass in.

I hesitated about saying this but we turned down a lovely house because the whole house smelt of garlic and curry. We looked into getting the house cleaned and deodorised (and they were taking the curtains) but there were no guarantees that what was available in the way of treatments then (its some 30 years ago) would actually work, in which case it would be carpets and underlay up, wallpaper off, the lot. It would have been a great house for the price......

  1. shared drive or shared anything!

  2. no driveway

  3. Next to pub or similar entertainment venue

  4. next to a carriageway.

  5. house with no room for outbuildings

I really struggle to believe this. You didn’t buy a house because you didn’t like what the inhabitants had been cooking.

Cyclebabble · 24/05/2025 20:59

Solar panels are great. I have 20. They look cool and over a year I spend £150 on leccy and that includes running a leccy car.

Thatched roof. A house near where I lived as a child was burnt out when the roof caught fire from wind-blown sparks from a nearby burning farm-house (electrical fault) which itself had had suffered a thatch fire some twenty years previously and had been re-roofed with tiles..

Log burner is interesting. Some listings list it as a real benefit, but then I see the government is trying to warn against them? I don’t really understand what’s ‘correct’ for log burners.

They’re terrible for the environment

Preachscreen · 24/05/2025 21:07

I'd love one but the mess and effort....is the reason why ehavent. Now have to open chimney fires but no log fires fitted.

Ah yes, I remember years ago a friend having one of these! Didn't realise that's what they're called 🤣

A lot of people have white ceramic sinks farmhouse kinda style

Kinda stupid if you don't live in a farmhouse

also if it's open to the house it's not great for the inhabitants either. Wood smoke smells lovely but is bad for your lungs. We have an open wood fireplace but only use it once or twice a year when it's super cold.

Well, oddly, the building next door to us was an Indian restaurant for years, then the owners sold, and it’s being converted into two apartments. The builder who bought it invited me in before they set to work in case I wanted any glasses etc. All the carpets, curtains, soft furnishings were exactly as before, and certainly couldn’t tell by smelling that anyone had ever cooked a curry in there.

IsThePopeCatholic · 24/05/2025 21:10

Open fires
wood-burning stoves
aga
plastic doors and windows
north-facing garden
busy road
paved-over garden
artificial grass
large tree in garden or nearby garden
unsavoury looking neighbours
loud music from nearby
