  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

A saniflo toilet. I'd rather have only one loo than a saniflo

CoastalCalm · 24/05/2025 12:13

With … out a bath
With an open plan kitchen / lounge
With a huge expanse of artificial grass

Whaleadthesnail · 24/05/2025 12:14

One bathroom upstairs that can only be accessed through a bedroom (lots where we are)

No side access to the garden

Kitchen on separate floor to living room (again lots of three storey 'town houses' like that where we are)

squashyhat · 24/05/2025 12:14

With a postage stamp-sized garden
With artificial grass
With Japanese Knotweed

Wyr · 24/05/2025 12:14

Omg artificial grass yes why oh why!!
and yes to side access to garden. Absolute nightmare having to traipse through the house every time.

also, front door that opens in to living room

Artificial grass
Fully paved garden
Right of way for neighbours over any part of my garden

TheNightingalesStarling · 24/05/2025 12:16

No walk in shower
A basketball hoop in a neighbouring property
Somewhere where you can't get to secondary school independently

Oooh this is. Good one. Quite a lot near us that have this for getting bins through etc. all well and good if you’re friends but not so much if the shit hits the fan

Open plan on the ground floor.
A kitchen island.
Dark grey everywhere.

TeenLifeMum · 24/05/2025 12:17

Completely open plan
artificial grass
no hallway
garden over looked
no bath

Thunderpants88 · 24/05/2025 12:18

pebbledash

gravel driveway

attached on either side

CoastalCalm · 24/05/2025 12:19

I’ve lived in a house with no access to the back garden at all - backed onto a cemetary with a 10 foot stone wall separating , I hated having the bins at the front of the house but soon got used to it. Various deliveries had to come via the cemetary for the street

Wyr · 24/05/2025 12:19

Interesting that a lot of people against open plan, was pushed on us so heavily in late 90’s / early 00’s but I always felt it made houses smell of cooking / felt like roaming around inside. I like separate rooms.

No outside space at all

MammaTo · 24/05/2025 12:20

This probably applies more to a smaller first time buyer house, but I really don’t like houses where the stairs go into the living room and don’t have a hallway. Also, those massive kitchen/diners that are huge open spaces - feels like I’m in someone’s garage.

SendBooksAndTea · 24/05/2025 12:20

Open plan, I like a separate lounge, dining room and kitchen.

Nowhere to park or an integrated garage.

No, or very small, garden.

Obviously sometimes it comes down to budget and what you can afford at the time , but these are priorities for me.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 24/05/2025 12:21

Ndn with ddogs or dc..
I have both!!
Nor a caravan as I would be very envious..

Wyr · 24/05/2025 12:22

I’m going to add a period property where they’ve changed the windows to cheap plastic UPVC

I'm not sure any windows are cheap these days to be fair!

MoistVonL · 24/05/2025 12:23

A small garden.
A north facing garden.
On a private road.

mugglewump · 24/05/2025 12:24

Plastic (front and back) doors and plastic windows. I would rip a plastic conservatory down.
Totally built over garden (extended so far that there is only room for a table and chairs outside)
Very small bedrooms (possibly made small due to the DIY addition of mini en suites in every room).

FloweryCactus · 24/05/2025 12:24

Talk about first world concerns! Many people, including most British under 30s, would just be very grateful for a roof over their heads which they owned.

Private road one is interesting as some people love this - what’s the main down sides?

Everyone says ‘no bath’. Our house didn’t have a bath (previous owners were an elderly couple removed it for a larger shower tray). Bathroom needed replacing so it was one of the first things we did.
I do recall one estate agent saying ‘Most people want open plan these days, would look at knocking this wall down’. It’s a load bearing wall 🙄
For me it would be:

  1. same road as a school (lived on one as a student, also had a dead end and minimal turning space)
  2. no off road parking
  3. no side access
