I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

Sorry I meant to comment here!! *this sounds lush

Thank you! 😁My parents asked me at the time, what was I thinking moving from detached to terraced, until they saw it, and then they said "Ahh, I get it". Neighbours are lovely too, we often have communal BBQ's etc, and the other street never did anything like that.

I have a number of things people hate

  • no bath (out of choice)
  • open plan
  • no side access
  • no driveway
  • only one toilet

None of these bother me too much, yes would be great to have an extra loo but I have a nice low mortgage for my cosy wee house.
Dealbreaker for me would be a busy road.

Fancy a housemate?! 😁

Is anyone else counting up how hated their house is?

(So far I have an airport nearby, a bus stop opposite, on a school road, no bath, a hot tub, a garden office, and a conservatory)

The bath thing doesn’t bother me either, I have one but think I’ve used it about 5 times in 9 years!

ah yes and artificial grass. Though it wouldn’t be a game breaker if everything else was great. you can remove it, just a lot of work.

non-open plan, separate kitchen room, separate dining room etc is a game breaker. Wouldn’t even view it. I guess it shows each different living style has a its own customer.

On a flood plain.

tulippa · 24/05/2025 12:59

I would not buy a house:
On a main road
On a road with a school on
By traffic lights or a bus stop
Without a decent grocery shop within 10 minutes walking distance
That has an open plan kitchen and living room
With only one toilet
With a garden that's been paved over

These are all things we've had in previous houses that have annoyed me when living there.

GrapeBerry · 24/05/2025 12:59
  1. Any rooms without a window
  2. Lack of natural light
  3. Attached to another property
Wyr · 24/05/2025 12:59

The world would be very boring if we all liked the same things!

Grocery or little corner shop definitely very important

I would've wary of being as close as we are to tourist attraction again. In the summer, leaving the house between 9-11am and 3-5pm needs extra planning.

Doris86 · 24/05/2025 13:00

i would never buy house with:

  • A big tree nearby
  • Electricity pylons too close
Airfixkitwidow · 24/05/2025 13:00

A badger sett in the garden.

Toooldforthisbollocks · 24/05/2025 13:01

A trampoline in the neighbour’s garden.
Unkempt neighbour’s property or garden.
Open plan
Bi fold doors
Those rectangular tiles on the bathroom or kitchen walls which remind me of a public toilet
Black, grey or red kitchen
Over looked garden
Concrete garden
Near a school or playground
On a cut through to anywhere
On a busy road

dudsville · 24/05/2025 13:01

Across from a school in particular, but anything with high traffic,

On a busy road,

With neighbours who don't look after their properties.

We had solar panels fitted last year. You have to have realistic expectations. Our bills are only about £20 a month cheaper as a result. We didn't have them fitted to make a profit - they will take decades to pay for themselves but because it seemed environmentally responsible.

MrsPositivity1 · 24/05/2025 13:03

ShodAndShadySenators · 24/05/2025 13:04

Bamboo (and that extends to not buying next door to a house with bamboo)
A very steep drive
A north facing rear garden
A house fronting on the pavement

I have lots of things I'd change such as adding lavatories, converting a ground floor from total open plan, get rid of fake grass/reinstate drainable ground, etc, but I'd avoid the above as things I couldn't do anything about

Lelivre · 24/05/2025 13:04

North facing garden
low ceilings (we are tall)

KnewYearKnewMe · 24/05/2025 13:05

A shared drive

an unadopted road

Longingforspringtime · 24/05/2025 13:06

Stairs off a living area
Artificial grass or fully paved garden
Shared parking and access
East facing garden
Lots of screaming kids playing on e scooters outside
No bath
Downstairs bathroom
No downstairs loo
Rubbish strewn neighbours’ gardens
Constant dog barking

No private parking space
No gas supply
No way to charge car
