I would NEVER buy a house with…

  • solar panels
  • a ‘garden house’ IE a lockdown special outdoor wooden shed dressed up as an office - usually taking up half the garden and completely pointless
  • a neighbour who has a load of cars / shit in their yard - hoarder vibes

who’s next? 3 things that would make you not buy a house…

Bamboo planted in the garden (I like it in pots but it’s just too invasive in the ground and it’s the next ‘knotweed’.

Tiled floors downstairs - I like wood or other hard flooring but tiles without underfloor heating is just cold and lifeless (unless you live in a hot country)).

Lots of pine skirting. I like oak, but it’s expensive. Pine has a tendency to start looking orange and a bit ‘eighties trendy’. I’d rather it just be painted white.

Agree with PPs re solar panels and fake grass too and (sorry - more than three) I’d be reluctant to purchase a property with sewer access hatch in the garden - ugly and potentially dear if in boundary and it’s the only way to access a pooberg 🤢

Edited

I'd take a sewer access hatch in the garden over where we have it, which is a tiny gap in between our extension and the neighbour's extension accessed via a tiny door as we couldn't build over it! Fortunately it can only be rodded from their side 😂

A North facing garden-I wouldn't even view
No bath
Front door opens into sitting room

Bananafofana · 24/05/2025 12:48

No downstairs loo for guests, no separate utility room or space for washing machine : loathe them in the kitchen (didn’t grow up in the uk so there are a few things i can’t adjust to)

JustMyView13 · 24/05/2025 12:48

UPVC patio doors as porch doors

I would never buy a house ...

With a front garden that's smaller than the lounge. (And is 6-8 feet away from the public footpath and has people gawping in!)

With no driveway. (I prefer a garage too but that's not a dealbreaker.) Preferably a 2 car driveway. (Minimum!)

With homes opposite that have no driveway (as I will have to constantly tolerate people parking on the road opposite my drive.)

Without at least one lawn. (I hate gravelled or paved gardens, and ditto to hating artifical grass!)

With an open plan design. (Never liked this!)

Without drainage and sewage facilities (I do NOT want a septic tank.)

Without gas plumbed in. (I don't want to be constantly having to buy Calor gas cannisters.)

With electric-only heating.

Also, I would never buy a house that is 3 feet away from the houses either side (like with some post 1990 newbuilds.)

I'm sure there's more! 😆

Windowless bathroom or toilet.

Steps up or down...must be on the flat(ish).

On a busy road.

Next to a council run nursing home.

One had vile owners who were rude and threatening and treated their occupants appallingly. It made me quite sad to think what was going on in there. It was eventually closed because it failed its health inspection several years running. Unfortunately it was then turned into a HMO. Houses are Edwardian and worth 1.5 million on this street. Luckily we were only there a short time.

Second one, the residents had small balconies that backed up against our garden near my kitchen window. Unfortunately a lot of racist and anti-immigration language could be heard. Again similar area, desirable postcode.

We have now moved where we have few neighbours and a large wrap around garden!

Private road one is interesting as some people love this - what’s the main down sides?

You are responsible collectively with all the owners of the properties for up keep. can be a recipe for disaster in terms of agreeing on what to do/which contractor to use/budget. then throw in landlords who don't live in property and can be hard to get hold of.

menopausalmare · 24/05/2025 12:51

No garden.

  • without a bath
  • with a garage
  • with an ensuite

Has anyone ever bought a house that has anything unusual like a swimming pool or something?! I do sometimes see some ‘normal’ houses come up with something completely random like a swimming pool in the back garden 😆

Solar panels
Open plan
A kitchen island with 3 dangling lights above.

Blondiebeachbabe · 24/05/2025 12:53

Sometimes you have to trade off though. I moved from a detached house with large back garden, to a terraced house with a small paved back garden. The view from the front of the house is magnificent : uninterrupted sea views and very often big cruise ships. I sit in my garden with a coffee or wine, and just watch the boats and listen to the waves. It's south facing too, so always bathed in sun. The trade off was well worth it.

Penthrowingsurvivor · 24/05/2025 12:54

open-plan kitchen

a pond

a conservatory

fake grass

without: a drive
a garage

I hate things like artificial grass but I could rip it out so it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I've experienced bamboo issues. I'd consider a house with bamboo issues but be looking for significant money off.

I wouldn't buy a house with subsidence.

I hate three storey houses.

I wouldn't want a pool.

Tbh I wouldn't want a house so big that I'd be a slave to cleaning.

I wouldn't want a house where the only parking required a permit.

user1476613140 · 24/05/2025 12:54

I don't have open plan even if DH tried to f
do this I refused. I like all separate areas in a house.

Plastic grass. I've heard plastic grass is quite hard to get rid of. It has a lot of stuff underneath- compacted stone and mesh.
Noisy neighbours (but how would you know?)
No or very little garden.
Log burner stove.

Log burner is interesting. Some listings list it as a real benefit, but then I see the government is trying to warn against them? I don’t really understand what’s ‘correct’ for log burners.

Going with a dd to view, we saw quite enough without even going inside - very loud music blaring out from next door, several noisy young blokes drinking beer in the front garden. Phoned the agent straightaway and said no thanks to this one!

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 24/05/2025 12:56

Any kind of shared access.

I can't think of anything else as it could all be changed.

Tonsilitittis · 24/05/2025 12:56

non-open plan kitchen. pokey kitchen as a separate room. I would like kitchen dining, possibly also family room together.
