Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

Haven’t read all the posts so might be repeating, but if the skip is actually on the road I believe it’s legal for anyone to put stuff in it. If it’s on your driveway then it’s illegal for anyone to dump their rubbish in.

Ellephanting · 22/05/2025 09:53

My neighbours filled my household rubbish bin, after I put it out for collecting. I went out to put one last bag of rubbish in and found it full. I looked on my camera and lo and behold, it was my next door neighbour. I thought CF but I let it go. I’d be interested to see what anyone else thinks about this?

As for the skip. Definitely tell him to remove his stuff, as you need the space that YOU HAVE PAID FOR.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/05/2025 09:59

Agree with so many others - take it out again and put it in his garden

No need for messages, which will get you nowhere with a CF anyway; just taking his rubbish back says it all

brettsalanger · 22/05/2025 10:00

Your uncle is right. Dump it all back.

TinyCottageGirl · 22/05/2025 10:01

100% please just send your uncle round and tell the neighbour it's not communal and he needs to collect his rubbish from your tip. Tell him it's costly and you need it for yourself! What a cheeky bloke.

This is normal use of a neighbour's skip.

Eh? What the fuck?

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 22/05/2025 10:02

Print out a still image from the video of him chucking stuff in - one with a good clear view of his face - get it blown up massive and then stick it to the outside of the skip!

Also, why are people assuming that the folding table is in good condition and the bloke is just too lazy to take it to a charity shop, or indeed just leave it at the edge of his property with a sign saying "Free - please take"? I'm guessing it's probably trashed/grubby/otherwise not desirable.

Unfortunately, it does seem to be 'a thing' in the mindset of a lot of CFs that a neighbour's skip is a community resource. Maybe they figure that, because it's big, it's therefore limitless, and their own contribution won't really make a difference - however massive it is.

It's a similar way of CF thinking as when people have stocked up in advance with something that they use a lot of, maybe bulk-buying so they get a good price or simply so that they don't have to think about it again for some time. They don't frame it that you've got enough toilet rolls in to last you a couple of months; rather they will just see it that you have loads - 'more than you need' - and therefore they can freely dig in and help themselves to the 'spare' ones.

Don't be ridiculous! Only a CF would even think that!!

Toptotoe · 22/05/2025 10:05

Take it out and put it back.

Eh? What the fuck?

To be fair, PP said 'normal' - not 'fine'.

It's also normal for many dog owners to let their dogs poo and then just leave it on the pavement; most people don't see it as acceptable, though.

A long long time ago my parents had a skip

I slung my mothers spin dryer in it

Neighbour comes over asking if he can have it as he wanted the motor, so I took it to his workshop

He puts it back on the skip a day or so later and I fill it with bricks as its bulky

A few days later and its gone

Someone must have been disappointed on wash day!

JDM625 · 22/05/2025 10:06

Team uncle!

To those that pick things up from other peoples skips:
We cleared out the garage and within an old Christmas wreath, was a partially decomposed and mummified rat! We put it in our skip.

Every day, we'd hear someone scream, when they'd picked up the pretty wreath to take it home! 😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/05/2025 10:07

What a cheeky fucker your neighbour is, @cannehelpit! I would definitely enlist the help of your uncle, and take it all back to his doorstep.

DPotter · 22/05/2025 10:10

IME the only way to stop neighbours using your skip comes down to timing - as soon as skip is delivered, fill it with your stuff and have it collected asap. I've even known of times when people have left rubbish by the side of the skip as its full!

BigDeepBreaths · 22/05/2025 10:10

As advised in earlier post, print out a screenshot or two and pop through door with a ‘nice’ note…

Dear Neighbour,

We note that you have been disposing of items in our skip. In case you werent aware, it is a private hire that we have paid for and we need the full use of it. Can you please come and retrieve your items today or tomorrow at latest, as we cannot afford to lose the space you have used up? If you’re not able to do this, we will do it for you and will leave your property on your front lawn.

Happy to provide the skip company details if you need them.

Blackcordoroys · 22/05/2025 10:11

Don’t call the police, what a waste of their time. Go and talk to the neighbour, with your uncle if need be, and take their stuff back. You are a grown up

Laminated sign on the skip saying smile you're on CCTV?
Or have the gumption to go and knock on his door and ask for a contribution to your costs

Shatteredallthetimelately · 22/05/2025 10:15

Do you have a local Facebook page
You could post a screen shot of the person putting items in the skip and ask/them to come and collect them or if anyone knows them.

Failing that if your uncle is happy to, and you're happy to let him, I'd have him have a word before cheeky neighbour gets a chance to empty all his clutter into it.

Handbagcuriosity · 22/05/2025 10:16

He’s a cheeky twat isn’t he!

Not sure if it would be classed as fly tipping if it is on his property? Maybe give the council a quick call to understand if there will be by issues dumping his stuff at his door. You have it on camera. Then you might feel a bit better for a course of action.

You might not get everything of his out of the skip but you could grab the bits that you know are definitely his, dump them at his door with a note as PP’s have said

Maybe ask 101 if it is a criminal issues - don’t think it will be though unfortunately

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 22/05/2025 10:16

Oh FFS - let's not get side tracked worrying the OP will get done for fly tipping. She's got evidence of the neighbours actions.

I'd go round with some of the stuff he's put in there and tell him you have him on camera putting the stuff in and on other occasions too. Can he come and collect the rest asap. You're paying for the skip and it's not a free facility for him or anyone else. If he doesn't apologise and come collect the rest then put it on his path/drive yourself. You might want to mention that you would like to keep things friendly with neighbours but he has taken the micky just putting things in without even asking.

I once took some bagged rubbish back to a business who had put their stuff in our bin at work, unfortunately for them with a printed out email so we knew it was theirs. They were a good five minute drive away but one of their employees had previously worked at our company and was dumping the rubbish on her way home. Cheeky feckers.

cannehelpit · 22/05/2025 07:50

It is incredibly cheeky.

He just walks up, places a fold up table, around 1m by 70cm, into the skip. Dusts his hands off on his shorts, and walks back to his house.

Job done.

;p ;p ;p

It's jaw dropping to watch on camera. About 15 instances of it! Bit metal poles. It's as though he's seen my skip and decided now is teh time to get rid of all amnner of rubbish from his house!

Probably a silly question - but have you spoken to him? Tell him its your skip, paid for by you, and tell him not to put things in it. Otherwise your uncle dumping it back to him is a great idea.

HectorPlasm · 22/05/2025 10:19

We had a skip at our new house when we had a patio done. A neighbour we had never met sauntered over and persuaded OUR landscaper to got to HER garage to collect HER rubbish and put it in OUR skip. Double whammy! I caught them in the act and went into high end bollocking mode on both. didn't happen again!

Sorry for the capitals - it still rankles.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/05/2025 10:21

Well - he must know it is someone's skip, @GreenCandleWax - and that it definitely isn't HIS skip, so he knows he's being a cheeky fucker by putting his stuff in there.

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 22/05/2025 10:21

Stuff back on the lawn and letter with screenshots of his behaviour, citing exactly how he is breaking the law.

Or screenshots on the skip 😂
