Caught on camera - neighbour filling up my skip

I need some guidance here please!

I have a skip outside my house. Several times a week, whether there is someone in the house or not, my neighbour comes and deposits something there. Bulky items, not small tiny things. I'd say about a quarter of the skip's contents is now my neighbours. I can see him on the camera crossing over the road, walking about 6 doors up and going back into his house. I don't know him personally, though I've lived on the street about 3 years.

What should I do about this. I do need that space for myself. I have also learned that I am responsible for the contents, so if it is rejected by teh skip company when they come to return, or god forbid there is anything illegal etc in there, I am liable. Also, it's just my skip!

What should I do? My parents say I should report it to the police. My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

I’d go with your uncles suggestion. Not sure the police will give a monkeys about it tbh

GoingToGraceland · 22/05/2025 09:12

You must live in a nice area. We once lived in a not so desirable area, where it was impossible to FILL a skip - people kept taking stuff out! Overnight half the contents disappeared, and occasionally you'd see someone pull up outside, have a mooch in the skip and take something. One chap did knock the door and ask.

Our business is still in that area and we're currently having building work done. Same again. DH left the old radiators outside, next morning they were gone. A folding table wouldn't be there long 😄

RoofTopSingers · 22/05/2025 09:12

You knock on his door and say if he needs a skip he needs to pay to hire one for himself. Tell him to remove all the items he has dumped in there as it is all on camera, every item he dumped. Leave it at that and see what happens. Hopefully he will just remove stuff.

I think if you leave it on his front garden you can be done for fly topping. I worked for the council and one householder had left a bag on top of bin loader put it on ground next to bin. Householder complained flytipped on their property. Council agreed.

I’d pop around /send bolshy uncle write a letter and say video evidence will be reporting you for flytipping unless removed by x.

This was my concern. Also, what if we accidentally left one thing that wasn't his? We'd be as bad as him.... And he'd have as much of a claim of crime etc against us.

This is so funny! Thanks for the laughs!

I’m with your uncle, definitely deposit back to the cheeky sods garden.

Ginnnny · 22/05/2025 09:27

If you can get the stuff out, take it out and give it back to him. Had similar during a house renovation a few years ago and two neighbours filled my skip overnight, all caught on Ring! My DP took it all back. Lesson learned to get a skip with a lid for next time if possible. Neighbours see skip and must think "ooh, time to have a clear out" Fuckers.

Nomoredamnmats · 22/05/2025 09:27

Our neighbours put some stuff in our skip. Difference is, they asked first and were prepared to take no for an answer.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 22/05/2025 09:32

on the odd occasion that we do hire a skip, once we have put in what we need to get rid of, we go to the nearest neighbours and tell them to toss in their rubbish too, if they have any.

JDM625 · 22/05/2025 09:32

Is he aware you have cameras?
We live in a quiet lane used by dog walkers. Our skip was at the front near a giant bramble. Every day, we'd find bags of dog poo which had been lobbed, but missed the skip and would be dangling from the bramble thorns!
I added a sign 'Smile, you are on camera' and it soon stopped.

I'd go with your uncle to their house and tell him to remove the stuff.

NewsdeskJC · 22/05/2025 09:35

The metal poles won't be there long. Tbh don't know why he just didn't leave them outside. Anything metal disappears round here.

SummerySunshine8 · 22/05/2025 07:46

I'm with your uncle, chuck it in their driveway/front garden.

Cheeky fuckers.

Alternatively, inform the skip company and have them invoice your neighbour.

The skip company will not invoice anyone else other than the customer

This is normal use of a neighbour's skip.

No it bloody isn't

blueboocat · 22/05/2025 09:41

Return it all back to him with a screenshot picture of him in the act. He can’t argue with that.

trousersearch · 22/05/2025 09:43

Talk to him?! You’ve stayed quiet with 15 instances of things being put in your skip…he probably thinks you don’t mind!

MoominUnderWater · 22/05/2025 09:43

I’d be telling him to take it out.

Codlingmoths · 22/05/2025 09:44

Team uncle. Take it all out and throw it all over his lawn.

TheAmusedQuail · 22/05/2025 09:45

My uncle says he'll come and put the stuff back in my neighbours front yard!

Get your uncle to do this. Tape a notice to them saying that dumping stuff on someone else's land counts as fly tipping.

I wouldn't do as others are advising though and chuck it on his lawn. I'd just place it tidily (as much as you can) on his drive. Possibly in front of his car if there is one parked there. No point being extra antagonistic.

OR if your uncle is brave enough, ask him to knock on the neighbours door and tell him.

pimplebum · 22/05/2025 09:45

simple solution is to put a note
” you are on camera do not put rubbish in here unless you are prepared to pay for it “

id also put note through his door asking for a contribution to the next skip as you don’t have enough space in thus one

This is literally what happened when we cleared my Grandparents house! People came and took almost everything. Almost no need for the skip at all 😂

cannehelpit · 22/05/2025 07:51

Big metal poles

I would knock on his door and tell him to come and collect it as you need the space. Point out he is flytipping and if you report it to the police and council they will fine him

MyDeftDuck · 22/05/2025 09:49

Let your uncle retrieve the neighbours crap and take it back…….knock on his door and tell him why it’s being returned. Skip hire isn’t cheap, I know as we’ve recently had one, and FWIW the neighbour is a CF for assuming it was ok to dump it in your skip, that you paid for.
Do make sure that you tell the neighbour that contents can also be rejected by the skip hire company……..that way you will be educating him and can further justify your actions.

Gustavo1 · 22/05/2025 09:51

Absolutely, have your uncle take it all back. If he’s game, he can knock on and say “The video recorded you putting these things in the skip. It’s a private skip hire so don’t put your things in it please.” Otherwise, pop that in a note on the door.

cheeky fucker of a neighbour. A skip isn’t a neighbourhood invitation for a clear out!!

NewGoldFox · 22/05/2025 09:52

What’s the betting all the folk saying neighbours can use the skip have never themselves paid for a skip!
