(photos) Panicking - worker here to install picture rail and not sure it's the right choice

I ordered picture rails and planned to have them installed today. Suddenly I am second guessing everything.

Should we go for it?

This is ground and first floor. The ugly clothes rail will obviously be removed from any final decoration scheme. We will be installing traditional Victorian tile flooring on the ground floor.

Honestly? I don't think it needs it.

CheckedChecker · 11/04/2025 09:54

@LisaVanderpump1 thank you! Do you think it's an actively bad idea? If so, why? My head is all in a muddle 😭

Forgot to mention - it would only be on the side of the hall opposite the window thing (ground floor) and the staircase (first floor)

I agree that you don’t need picture rails, I think it would look too busy and detract from the lovely decorative plaster work on the ground floor.

heldinadream · 11/04/2025 10:01

Picture rail on one side only?
Why?
What were you thinking? 😂 Sorry I'm not meaning to be rude. Presumably you were going to use it for actually hanging pictures, but it's not necessary and just on one side is so obviously added and a bit weird. The house looks lovely BTW!
No, it definitely doesn't need it, there's enough going on, once you've got some art up etc it'll be fine.

titchy · 11/04/2025 10:03

I don’t think it needs it either. But if you do have it, it needs to be on both walls.

To actually hang pictures, yes! I thought it would be good to have it in the more plain side where I would actually want to hang pictures.

Thank you - I think it's a beautiful house too 😊

The reason not to put it on the side with the stairs is also that we don't want it to go all the way up to the loft floor, which has shorter ceilings

TwoBlueFish · 11/04/2025 10:06

I would say no, you already have coving, chair rail and other period decorative pieces.

RitaAndFrank · 11/04/2025 10:06

I don’t think I’ve ever seen dado and picture rails together 🤔 in which case I think it might be too much to have a picture rail here.

Reallybadidea · 11/04/2025 10:07

I just don't think it will add anything and may look odd if it's only on one side

PrettyMessy · 11/04/2025 10:09

I don’t think you need it. Sconces, dado rail and coving are more than enough.

mimsiest · 11/04/2025 10:11

I've lived in several houses with both picture and dado rails, but I think the ceilings were probably quite a bit higher. How high are these?

I wouldn't add one here, especially with the decorative plasterwork. And especially not just on one side.

I was inspired in part by this. I do think you are right that it's unusual.

Nope. One or the other. You don’t need both. What time is workman due?

Upsidedownsides · 11/04/2025 10:14

I think the dado and picture rail will be too much. The example picture you have shared is a much bigger space so can handle it. Personally i really like picture rails as they are much better for hanging pictures, particularly if you change regularly.

if it were up to me I’d have the dado rail removed and picture rail put in

The hallway is a bit weird because it has different levels. The ceilings are actually quite tall, though.

i think picture rails have their uses eg hanging stuff off but aren't always needed

@LisaVanderpump1 thank you! Do you think it's an actively bad idea? If so, why? My head is all in a muddle 😭

Yes. I love your inspo pic (that wallpaper 😍), but if I look at it for a second longer, I do think it looks a bit odd that the picture rail is just on the one side and is super close to that decorative thing on the wall (the name of them escapes me right now!). It's kind of creating an off tangent.

But I love the look of your house. Are you doing a full remodel and if so, do you have an insta? Would love to follow along!

Trumpsgoneloco · 11/04/2025 10:18

The inspiration image is wider so can take it

I have already done a full remodel! I really love what we have done tbh. Maybe I should set up an insta ☺️

Annoyingly, I did not know how to create wide angle shots when we viewed and purchased the house, so my before shots are all a bit shit.

I’d have picture rails on both sides.
