Wacky or gorgeous?

A friend who is searching for a property by the sea sent me this for my opinion.

I am torn between thinking it wacky and gorgeous.

What do you think?

It’s VERY Hastings, your mileage may vary whether it appeals or not ;)

Almost lowkey for Hastings!

MadisonAvenue · 04/04/2025 12:08

The kitchen pictures come as a welcome relief after seeing the assault on the eyes which is the lounge.

DirtyBird · 04/04/2025 12:14

It’s got great bones 😁

FairKoala · 04/04/2025 12:16

I find it strange that they have carpet in the hallway but then painted floorboards in the rest of the house.

I think once the owner has removed their stuff, unless the next owner has a similar taste in furnishings most of the house will need redecorating,

I look at these type of houses and can spot the cheap wallpaper and garish and tacky stuff and wonder what else have they done on the cheap and hoping to distract viewers from the real issues

I know that for some people they see the outlandish wall paper and the furniture.

I see sad empty rooms with walls of wallpaper that I would want to scrape off, floorboards I would want to sand down and varnish, a kitchen that needs redesigning (What’s with the tiny kitchen island stuck in the middle of the room) and 2 bathrooms that needs to be brought into the 21st century.
I would also wonder if there were lead or copper pipes under the floorboards or when was the last time it was rewired

To me this house needs a huge amount of money spending on it

SunnySideDeepDown · 04/04/2025 12:19

Personally I hate it. Too busy, clashing prints, workmanship doesn’t look great (kitchen looks cheaply done for example). I don’t think it’s a particularly family friendly house (pond, cold floors, lack of kitchen storage, split levels) but for a quirky couple I could see it working fine.

BustingBaoBun · 04/04/2025 12:26

Stag heads and giraffe heads! Curtains over doors (that means a very cold house)
I would have a headache if I had to sit in a lounge like that.
And OMG the state of the garden, the steps are barely visible for weeds.
A monstrosity AFAIC

SomethingAboutNothing · 04/04/2025 12:28

I'm confused by the strange strips of wallpaper by the windows, they look odd to me. Agree with others that the panelling wallpaper is awful and looks terribly cheap. The conservatory looks like it will be a damp nightmare. Otherwise, it's nice enough with lots of lovely original features. The garden has lots of potential too.

Springersrock · 04/04/2025 12:33

I really like that kind of style, but don’t like some of their colour choices.

I love busy, maximalist type stuff so I like their ideas but not the execution if that makes sense

Cucy · 04/04/2025 12:56

Gorgeous!!

Lots of personality without it being overwhelming.

BustingBaoBun · 04/04/2025 12:57

Not overwhelming? My god, it totally overwhelms me and would induce a migraine!

Funderthighs · 04/04/2025 13:00

I’d have to tone it down a bit but it has the bones of a good house ❤️

Ecocool · 04/04/2025 13:03

It's a nice house but the only thing making it "wacky" (or a bit different) is the owner's possessions. Personally I like the interior although I probably wouldn't do it myself.

PayingItBack · 04/04/2025 13:04

That is a gorgeous house, It's so bright with lovely features and the rooftop garden is amazing. I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Most of the wacky stuff will go with the owner and the rest will be decorated over easily enough. Some of the wallpaper is really nice.

MiddleAgedDread · 04/04/2025 13:15

Once they take their stuff out it would be a nice house. Some wacky wallpaper to contend with (I could live with some but not all of it), and I hope the wood panelling is paper not actual wood.

pearbottomjeans · 04/04/2025 13:19

Definitely not gorgeous, but seems like lovely big rooms and I like it. A lot of the whacky will leave with the sellers and I like wallpaper stripping and redecorating personally!

DinoLil · 04/04/2025 13:21

Love it!

Nousernamesleftatall · 04/04/2025 13:22

The decor is a little ott but the house is beautiful. I love the light and the view.

Bluebellwood129 · 04/04/2025 13:35

3WildOnes · 04/04/2025 10:53

The fake panelling is ghastly. I quite like a few of the other rooms. It's a lovely house in general.

The fake panelling in one of the worst things I've seen in a very long time. Truly awful. The garden has lots of potential though.

CNDflag · 04/04/2025 13:40

Love it.. my house is a period one with lots of colour and maximalism. Right up my street.

AgnesX · 04/04/2025 13:40

I couldn't live with it but I like it!

Bluebellwood129 · 04/04/2025 13:40

Kurokurosuke · 04/04/2025 12:03

Almost lowkey for Hastings!

Houses with this kind of decor are literally everywhere though.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 04/04/2025 10:42

I ‘m sure I saw that house on a property programme a few years ago. Can’t remember which one but it looks very familiar.

Looks familiar to me too - I think it’s been posted on here before…

Radionowhere · 04/04/2025 13:42

fromthevault · 04/04/2025 09:54

It's lovely. Beautiful kitchen and garden. And tbh when you strip out all of the owner's stuff, it's really just a few rooms with lairy wallpaper, some of which I like anyway.

The only thing I find really ugly is that fake panelling wallpaper in the sitting room, the rest I could happily live with.

Agree with every word of this.

PixelatedLunchbox · 04/04/2025 13:43

Wow I love it. What a joyful home!

Hortus · 04/04/2025 13:46

BustingBaoBun · 04/04/2025 11:25

My god, absolutely horrible! I would lose the will to live even looking round it!

There's wacky, and there's cluttered with crap and awful decorating choices! I think it's typified by the washing line with pegs hung in the conservatory or whatever room it is.

Good job we're all different!

But wouldn't you simply look through all that to see the bones of the house? Decor is purely cosmetic and can be changed. It isn't my style but because it's got lovely original features I could easily decorate to make the rooms how I would like.

These days so many people seem to want to move in and have to do no decorating so they get put off and otherwise great house because they can't be bothered to do some painting and wallpapering.
