Wacky or gorgeous?

A friend who is searching for a property by the sea sent me this for my opinion.

I am torn between thinking it wacky and gorgeous.

What do you think?

Gorgeous! If I bought, I would tone down but I much prefer that to cold, grey and bland.

Stagshear · 04/04/2025 10:56

It works. But my worry would be once you remove all their furniture and accessories the walls and curtains and fixed decor would look very odd with most people’s “normal” furniture. And so you would need to redecorate the lot anyway.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 04/04/2025 10:56

Both. Once the owners furniture and stuff (disco ball in the lounge window) are removed it will be a lot tamer. Some of the feature wallpaper is not to my taste (fake panelling and bathroom) but others you might be able to live with when the rest is toned down.

My concern would be the garden as it seems very neglected and overgrown and in some places potentially dangerous (the pond and some the retaining wall sleepers). That could quickly become a money and time pit.

Take down the panelling and repaper most of the rooms and it's fine. (Although those checkerboard steps up to the front door would set off a migraine and are potentially a trip hazard.

The photos are very heavily filtered and what's with the white dots of light all over some of them?

KingMungBean · 04/04/2025 11:08

It’s VERY Hastings, your mileage may vary whether it appeals or not ;)

YellowGuido · 04/04/2025 11:10

It’s a beautiful house! Yes, there’s lots going on with the decor, but nothing that can’t be changed (if wanted) relatively easily…

And that loft room… yes please!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 04/04/2025 11:12

Some of it is lovely. The key parts are great, original features, views to the rear, room sizes. The kitchen units are plain and look to be of reasonable quality. So at the end of the day, it's just wallpaper stripping and the owner's possessions which would go with the sale. It's a good house.

It's not real panelling, just panelling effect wallpaper, so even easier to remove.

UpUpUpU · 04/04/2025 11:14

LOVE IT!

ginasevern · 04/04/2025 11:18

I think it's gorgeous. It's a lovely and inviting looking house with a lot of original features. The kitchen looks fab.

LurcherMumma · 04/04/2025 11:19

I quite like it apart from

  1. the fake panelling. I think because the paper is so shiny and its such a big chunk of the room that it clearly looks fake.
  2. the slightly off set grey and white tiles on the front step makes it looks a bit wibbly wobbly

They could be changed though. I love the character of the property.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 04/04/2025 11:23

I love it! Too cluttered in places but that’s easy to remedy - I want the flamingo!!

hereismydog · 04/04/2025 11:25

I love it! It’s so light and bright. Some of the wallpaper isn’t to my taste but it’s so easily changed. It looks very well looked after and I’m sure whoever buys it will be very pleased with it Smile

BustingBaoBun · 04/04/2025 11:25

My god, absolutely horrible! I would lose the will to live even looking round it!

There's wacky, and there's cluttered with crap and awful decorating choices! I think it's typified by the washing line with pegs hung in the conservatory or whatever room it is.

Good job we're all different!

mambojambodothetango · 04/04/2025 11:28

Nothing wacky that isn't easy to change. It's just furnishings that will go with the current owner and decor that you can change over time.

Echobelly · 04/04/2025 11:31

Not necessarily my style but I appreciate it, I like patterns and colour and like it much more than those houses where colour photos look B&W because everything is grey!

CatsWhiskerz · 04/04/2025 11:37

Lovely except the panelling and the bathroom wallpaper/pink loo seat
Hastings however doesn't have the best reputation, some parts are awful so make sure it's in a good area. Little Common or Cooden are quite close and much nicer

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/04/2025 11:41

It's amazing! I actually quite like it. I love the way they've obviously put all their designer energy into the house and nothing whatsoever in the garden.

GeorgianaM · 04/04/2025 11:44

As a holiday home I would enjoy it but not go live there. It's too busy and I like a calming and restful decor.

TeeBee · 04/04/2025 11:46

The house has lovely bones. The garish stuff can be removed.

FairKoala · 04/04/2025 11:49

I think that the loud wallpaper is great on certain walls but not every wall and not in every room.
Large areas of busy wallpaper in bathrooms should not be allowed. Especially if it is a dark colour.

Also why the small mountain of towels by the sink? Seems strange and somewhat unhygienic

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/04/2025 11:50

It's lovely. I agree with pp who've said that not a lot of the brightness is permanent - strip out the soft furnishings, upholstery and ornaments, and you're left with some wallpaper. I normally don't like florals, but I love the turquoise wallpaper in the bathroom.

Kandalama · 04/04/2025 11:51

Strip back all the stuff and you end up with reasonable room sizes ( although that conservatory is horrid )

Fake panelling……yukK
Getting paint off original fireplaces takes absolutely ages. Who paints fireplaces anyway and why grey fgs!
What’s happened to the original floors!
I know everyone can do what they like to their home but why ruin original features along the way

Horrid

BigDahliaFan · 04/04/2025 11:51

Love it. (But not the panelling wallpaper).

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/04/2025 11:59

It’s both, I love it. Wouldn’t buy a semi though, in case it’s not just the decor that’s loud, lol.
