Anyone lived near an airport/close to runway

is it really bad. Or really really bad? I lived under a flight path about 3 miles from an airport once and used to have to stop conversations around the planes taking off in the area. That was ok. Wondering if this will be 10x worse though.

I live 10 miles away and they can be noisy especially the cross Atlantic ones. I can also tell you pretty much what’s going where based on time whilst watching telly

i love planes tho!

LovelyJubly12 · 06/03/2025 15:02

Me. I wouldn’t recommend it.

DazzlingCuckoos · 06/03/2025 15:15

What kind of airport? International airport or local pleasure flight airport?

And how close is close?

What time do flights start and end each day?

I love planes, but I couldn't be living right by a major international airport.

The planes going to our nearest airport 15 miles away come over our house around 6,000ft and that's fine for me.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 06/03/2025 15:22

I used to live Near East Midlands airport and used to love listening to the planes while I fell asleep. I can’t say I noticed it at any other time. I also used to go to school next to an air base in Saudi Arabia, now that was conversation stopping!

Ilikewinter · 06/03/2025 15:28

Yes living next to a runway will be noisy

Bubblychops · 06/03/2025 15:35

an international airport U.K. I love planes but am worried about the noise and also a bit worried about reselling the place too.

I used visit a friend in Sheen, difficult to sit in garden at times and had to talk over the noise from the big planes..i found it annoying.

I grew up on the housing estate just above Concorde's cockpit in the picture. This was during the days when they and subsequently the Airbus were built and tested in the 60's to 80's. We also had The Red Arrows take part in air displays from Filton runway too.
I now live below the approach for Bristol Airport, which is 20 minutes away (through country lanes) and they're about 1500 ft above us.

I'm pretty much at the end of the main runway of Edinburgh Airport...in all honesty I hardly notice it. Occasionally when one of the huge buggers takes off it's noticeable...and some of the military planes can be loud - but apart from that I don't mind it at all.

minnienono · 06/03/2025 17:02

Depends so much on flight path. I'm 7 miles from the airport but rarely have planes fly over me

Lovelynames123 · 06/03/2025 17:08

I live right on the flight path of an international airport, about 2 miles away from the actual runway. I barely hear them now although guests do, they never wake me.

Emirates from my garden!

I used to live quite near Heathrow some 30 years ago and it was bad. Concorde in particular was earth-shakingly deafening. It was also extremely busy, a jet going overhead every couple of minutes -- we were on the landing flight path. You could hear Concorde rumbling in from for miles off, getting louder and louder.

While many jets are much quieter these days it's busier than ever, some friends live in Twickenham and I find it very noisy when we visit.
After we moved from Richmond/Twickenham we lived close to Stansted Airport which was generally better, except on some summer weekends if you were outside in the garden and had to pause conversation for a couple of minutes.
But nothing was ever as bad as Concorde.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/03/2025 17:16

Most flights from UK airports start up around 7 am and very few take off or land much after midnight. Some do, due to delays, but i believe airlines can be fined if so.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/03/2025 17:18

Reselling might not be too much of a problem, airport workers and flight crew could be your target market!

Tupster · 06/03/2025 17:34

I once stayed in a B&B close enough to Stansted airport that the planes seemed to come over very low, and the noise was quite incredible. Personally I couldn't live that close.

Toottooot · 06/03/2025 17:37

2 miles from an ‘international’ (iykyk) airport and barely notice it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/03/2025 18:02

It's scary to think that the first time I saw Concorde it was still undergoing test flights.

MrsGaryKemp · 06/03/2025 18:04

Maybe say where? It very much depends on location as you can be right near an airport but have less noise than someone 10 miles away......

SwedishEdith · 06/03/2025 18:07

We live close to one. They vary take off and landings so you don't always get the same noises. I love watching them though and hearing a massive jet take off. Doesn't seem to affect house prices - people locally know where the flight paths are.

RaininSummer · 06/03/2025 18:25

Had an Air b and b once near Bristol airport and it was unbearable. Every five mins throughout the night a plane seemed to take off. No sleep.

Advocodo · 06/03/2025 18:26

Lived right next to Heathrow Airport runway for 3 years. You could almost touch the planes. Not a problem but I guess it was pre kids. Family live a couple of miles from Heathrow and again not a problem.

I wouldn’t worry about reselling as many airport workers would want it, having said that I am no expert.

id love to stay where you are im about 15 miles away in livingston and can hear the planes, its more noticeable when planes are taking off eastwards

PaintCatsPaint · 06/03/2025 18:32

I live near Glasgow Airport. The noise doesn’t bother me at all. It took a bit of getting used to but I hardly register it now.
