What colour to paint bedroom (with photos)?

My bedroom was last painted 5 years ago and is in desperate need of a repaint. I used the wrong paint finish - with it being a dark colour, you just need to brush against it or touch it with your hands and the walls mark. The easiest option would be to repaint the two main walls in the same colour (but different finish). Alternatively, I could repaint the whole room. Any suggestions of a colour that would work with everything else in the room? The carpet also needs replacing this year.

Have you thought about papering instead of painting? Dark colours can be a pain to go over.

Onlyonekenobe · 25/01/2025 18:04

You have really gorgeous sunlight at whatever time of day that photo was taken. I’d make the most of that and go with warm tones like yellow, orange, rust, soft pink (this works really well with changing seasons).

I agree with pp about painting over dark colours though. I’ve drenched my entry hallway a really dark colour and have major regret. It’s going to be a bitch to repaint. Am seriously considering paper.

I think Dusted Fondant would work well in that room

HomeAlonely · 25/01/2025 18:26

Green is always my go-to colour which isn't terribly helpful. But I just wanted to say that I got a really good vibe looking at the pictures of your room! I can't really explain why - I just felt comfortable and safe and happy when I looked at it <checks how empty the gin bottle is>

I would focus on getting rid of the carpet. Lovely room otherwise.

What's wrong with the carpet? I love carpet in a bedroom it's much cosier than wood/vinyl flooring.

Which outlets do good value nice wallpapers?

Helplessandheartbroke · 25/01/2025 18:48

Sage or elephants breath.... I love both

I went for denim drift last year but only on feature walls but I love this colour too but defo silk not matt as I'm having the same problems as you with the finish

lopyrs · 25/01/2025 19:15

Oh I love your bay window!

I am currently in this dilemma, MNetter recommended I got some stick it samples from Coat which I've done.

I'm mostly swayed towards beige/greige/taupes right now, I like coming colours in the bedroom, but I'm worried I'm being boring so watching with interest, despite my lighting being totally different! (Same colour carpet!)

lopyrs · 25/01/2025 19:15

Calming!

DonutCorleone · 25/01/2025 19:15

If you want to move away from the dark colour look at french country cottage colours - duck egg blue, sunflower yellow, lavender, white type colours.

No advice on paint colours but we have the same West Elm bed and love it!

WhenTheyComeForYou · 25/01/2025 19:44

If you’re looking for a mid century vibe, look on the West Elm website for inspiration!

TattiePants · 25/01/2025 19:46

Thanks for all the suggestions - lots to investigate! I’ve had dark bedroom walls previously (F&B’s Brassica) and then went for a pale blue so I’m not too worried about painting over the dark green. Nothing that a couple of coats of white can’t fix. That being said, I’m now seriously considering wallpaper. Problem is, I always like the expensive papers like Designers Guild and Cole & Sons so it’s not a cheap option.

I love yellows (definitely planning on a yellow kitchen in the future) but I don’t think it would work with the pink accessories which are too expensive to replace.

@heldinadream I’ve just shown my DD this colour and she now wants it for her room!

@HomeAlonely thank you, what a lovely thing to say.

@lopyrs i love the bay window too. We have four of them at the front of the house which let in so much light but are a nightmare when you need curtains!

I'd paint the whole thing including the ceiling pale blue. Might be a pain going over the green though

@WhenTheyComeForYou I love our bed! Just as Covid hit we were supposed to be having a relatively cheap bedroom makeover and bought the light from West Elm. Then all travel plans were cancelled so we ended up buying a whole new set of bedroom furniture from West Elm too!

I love pink with green (although Wicked may have made it too mainstream!)

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 19:57

That green/teal is depressing.

I like Julie's dream by Little Greene.

PineappleCoconut · 25/01/2025 20:05

I love the current colour
If repaint the same in a different finish
And change the carpet to darker, and maybe the chair to a dark blue velvet

DappledThings · 25/01/2025 20:10

It's a lovely room. If you really want to repaint it I'd go for something as close to the current colour as you can.

Having said that last we went from a mid-green to a beautiful royal blue (Craig and Rose Flanders Blue) and I love it too.

PorridgeOatsSuck · 25/01/2025 20:14

I feel a slight 1970s/mid century vibe to the furniture. I can see a lovely orange/yellow combo working. Warm colours with the natural light and gold accessories 👌

Sallysoup · 25/01/2025 20:18

I like it! Our bedroom is currently dark blue with similar furniture. Currently doing the spare bedroom in Dulux Perfectly Taupe and will accessories with earthy colours.

Slibberydibbery · 25/01/2025 20:24

I like the green- I’d get different bedding though. The pink and blue clash give spare room vibes.
