What colour to paint bedroom (with photos)?

My bedroom was last painted 5 years ago and is in desperate need of a repaint. I used the wrong paint finish - with it being a dark colour, you just need to brush against it or touch it with your hands and the walls mark. The easiest option would be to repaint the two main walls in the same colour (but different finish). Alternatively, I could repaint the whole room. Any suggestions of a colour that would work with everything else in the room? The carpet also needs replacing this year.

I’d just go really light, calming and beautiful. But I’d definitely add a picture rail. The ceilings look high and the wall needs to be broken up a bit. This would also give you the opportunity to paint the ceiling and down to to the picture rail in a soft, contrasting colour

I think your room and carpet look beautiful!! Keep it as it is I say 😍

I like Dulux village maze if you want a slightly toned down warmed green.

I think the green is gorgeous a d it's a lovely room. However, don't like the bedding or the picture above the bed. They are very jarring. I'd just change those for something nicer.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/01/2025 22:56

I honestly think it's lovely

What's wrong with the carpet? I love carpet in a bedroom it's much cosier than wood/vinyl flooring.

Bedroom carpets are linked to respiratory diseases and generally unhealthy.

Definitely don’t put paper on it, it’s a nightmare to take off and you’d likely need to replaster if you decide you don’t want paper or wallpaper anymore. It’s better to spend the time decorating a good primer and few layers of paint.

I do love your bedroom as it is, but I usually like lighter colours. Perhaps sage?

I also think carpets are cosy and make the room warmer. You can always wash them if concerned about respiratory diseases.

Considering the vast majority of the country likely has carpet in their bedrooms and I'm not aware of catastrophic rates of respiratory diseases this is likely a bit dramatic surely? Perhaps good advice for those with asthma or related conditions, but I'd hate hard floors in the bedroom.

Never heard that before. I'd never have a bedroom without carpet. Too cold looking otherwise.

I like your current colour, and generally favour strong colours, and agree with a pp that your room has a nice vibe — I think the only thing that looks a little off in your current decor is the pale carpet and bright white skirting which are too glaring with a strong colour. I’d also paint the ‘ceiling’ of your bay window the same colour as the walls if you choose another strong colour.

I have a gold/mustard and deep green on the walls of two downstairs spaces and painted the skirting and doors a muted grey (Colourtrend’s Mucky Swan’) which works far better, after white looked too glaring. I don’t think white skirting works with strong wall colours.

Is the fireplace surround wood or marble?

As long as you use a good quality wallpaper, it’s really easy to remove and won’t damage the walls. Five of my rooms (including this bedroom) have been wallpapered at different times, then stripped and painted and there’s been no damage.

Most of my house has hard flooring but the bedrooms are definitely staying carpeted. We had wood flooring in DD’s room for a while but it made it much colder and noisier.

@Risheth the fireplace is wood (and tiles). I agree about the white paintwork. In other rooms where I’ve used a strong colour, the paintwork matches the walls and it works much better.

Carpet still looks better though! Can't see myself ever changing my mind on that.

QuickDraining · 26/01/2025 13:00

I like the look initially but would tire of it very quickly. The carpet doesn't match for me. You have bright white in there, no escaping with the windows. The blue on the bed doesn't match the walls. And to me I'm not a fan of the white ceiling. If not swapping out the carpet, I'd be trying to scheme around that. I like dark, but given the room has light, and it's a nice shaped room, you have endless options.
