Amazing house - but who needs so much land?

SequinBear · 03/09/2024 09:13

Disclaimer - not my house, and also not a house I'm looking to buy. I'm looking in this kind of area, but my budget is significantly lower (less than a third of this house).

This house is obviously awesome, and I love all the luxury touches like the underground garage, the (freshwater?) pool, the alcohol pantry, etc.

But even if I could afford it and want it (it's also a bit too remote for me), who on earth needs 10 acres of land? That amount of land would actually put me off.

I appreciate it wouldn't be as easy as selling it, because then it might be built on and you wouldn't have the control of how it was used around you, but the maintenance of it would just be enormously costly and inconvenient, surely. And even if you could afford it, the mental load of having to be on top of it feels like way too much.

Do people wanting and affording these kinds of houses want that much land too? (Appreciate there are people who want horses and stables, but this doesn't look like the current set-up here - though appreciate you could maybe add all of that).

We are about to buy a house with nearly 20 acres of land. The house is pretty tiny but the vast majority of the land is regenerating bush so needs no maintenance at all. Also means we get no neighbours ever as it's protected.

We currently have an acre of finely preened garden and orchard. That's a right pain in the arse as the whole thing is so fucking needy. Everything needs pruning, weeding and mowing on the regular to not look like wasteland. In summer I'm constantly dealing with grass that grows 3 inches a day and excessive amounts of fucking soft fruit that I feel guilty about if it's windfall. And attracts vermin. There's only so much apricot jam one needs. Then the feijoas and olives come in autumn. Fucking masses of them which is backbreaking to harvest and huge amounts of money to process. Winter brings stupid amounts of citrus so we are overrun with persimmons, limes, lemons, satsumas and oranges. Fuck that.
I'm looking forward to letting things grow without endless daily titivation.
When we lived in London we owned exactly 1 square metre of balcony outdoor space. That was more than sufficient.

I'd bulldoze it and build something that wasn't hideous. The land is pretty.

😂 yeah not envious at all.

housethatbuiltme · 03/09/2024 11:20

A farmer?

It looks similar to Jeremy Clarksons farm house.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/09/2024 10:50

Yep
You need a to dig a big pond, build a nice warm shed and a Capybara proof fence. Then a man from the Scottish Government (If you're in Scotland) has to come and check its all good enough before you get your Capybara license.
I've looked into this

Edited

Wow! And did you get the capybaras? A little gang of baby capybaras would be the dream.

housethatbuiltme · 03/09/2024 11:22

People saying its hideous, I would love to know what they think nice is lol.

DizzyBumble · 03/09/2024 11:22

not my cup of tea at all, so much new wood

TheFlis · 03/09/2024 11:31

The thing that most upsets me about that house is all the massive TVs. Why would you need a huge TV in your dining room? It just makes me think of a family constantly glued to screens who never actually speak to each other.

Or maybe it's just nice to have the option, if you're loaded enough to put a TV in each room in case that's where you - alone or as a family - want to watch something or play a videogame sometime, not constantly. It's not indicative of the death of the family. Don't forget they've got all those fields to run around in, a pond to swim in, swings to swing on, cars to brum, so there's no reason to feel upset assuming they're constantly glued to screens ignoring each other.

BlankTimes · 03/09/2024 11:46

Don't like the house at all, its neither fish nor fowl.

Photo 36, who on earth would put a ceiling across the top of the arched windows, cutting out the natural form of the arched brickwork.

The land, yes 10 acres fully enclosed/for the owner's sole use would be lovely, but not these 10 acres with a footpath cutting across it as shown on the map at the end.
Everyone I know who has a footpath running through their land has problems with the people who use it.

Sunshineandtequila · 03/09/2024 11:49

I am really enjoying how when someone posts an expensive house on here, no matter how lovely , folks love to attack it. 😂

Chipsahoy · 03/09/2024 12:21

With 10acres I would allow a few to go wild. We have 2acres and easily use it all. You tend to use it when you have it.

Ardrahan · 03/09/2024 09:23

And I don’t like the house at all — at first I thought it was modern trying to ape old, but at least some of it is eighteenth century, so I suppose it’s just unsympathetically restored…?

Completely agree, and I’m shocked that they’ve been allowed to do that to an eighteenth-century house. They’ve completely destroyed it.

If you've got ten acres then you don't look after it like a really big garden garden! The sattelite image avaiable on google maps is a bit old and clearly mid-creation of that underground garage, but it shows that the land compromises of the garden area, a couple of overgrown fields and almost half of it is woodland. The woodland would be a lovely space for children to roam or to walk dogs. It will need some management over the years but if you've got the money to buy this property that's likely to be manageable. The fields could be used for horses, or other livestock or they could be rented out to local farmers to grow crops or keep their own livestock. It's clearly in the middle of farming country so there's likely to be demand.

'Cars to brum'. Love this phrase.

I had not noticed the footpath at all!!! Oh my god, that's totally taken the shine off for me. Good spot.

What problems are there with people using footpaths?

I think you've summed it up really well, actually. I probably was thinking about this as essentially a really big garden. But you and other posters have clearly shown that there's a whole different mindset of owning and using land of this size.

And I didn't think about renting it to farmers. I promise I'm actually a country girl - I just didn't realise the reality of large* pieces of land!

*And yes, appreciate others saying 10 acres isn't that much - my perspective is very limited 😁

What problems are there with people using footpaths?

If one of the benefits is privacy and peace and quiet, it feels incongruous to have a public footpath going through. And there are way too many horror stories (on here and elsewhere) about people straying off footpaths and having things like picnics on private land. But appreciate those who are more looking for multiple uses of the land and not solely privacy might not mind it.

EDIT: I guess this goes back to my mindset which was about it being a massive garden. Where it would feel stressful, and I wouldn't want a footpath through my garden. But I understand that might not be the best way to look at this kind of land ownership.

This house really is not awesome. It's really not very nice. Appallingly furnished too.

FuzzyDiva · 03/09/2024 13:21

We have similar but very little of it is our garden. The rest is woodland and meadows to ensure privacy but also mean minimal maintenance.

Laboheme78 · 03/09/2024 13:23

Plenty of people would be happy with 10 acres of land. Depending on set up, if you had a few horses then you’d have plenty of space for paddocks, then space to rest those paddocks at different times of the year. With planning you could add an arena and stabling. It would be great. Alternatively you could rent some of it out for grazing. There is probably enough space that if you had someone else using it then you’d not need to be bothered by them when they are coming and going. Property in this price bracket has enormous variation. Just depends what people are looking for.

I know it's irrelevant to the house itself but the interior decor is odd. Half of it seems to be from Oak Furniture Land and the other half from Period Furniture 4 U.

I think it's also a really unattractive house. Again, irrelevant as I'm a mere pauper and do not have £3m to purchase an ugly house with lots of land.
