Amazing house - but who needs so much land?

Disclaimer - not my house, and also not a house I'm looking to buy. I'm looking in this kind of area, but my budget is significantly lower (less than a third of this house).

This house is obviously awesome, and I love all the luxury touches like the underground garage, the (freshwater?) pool, the alcohol pantry, etc.

But even if I could afford it and want it (it's also a bit too remote for me), who on earth needs 10 acres of land? That amount of land would actually put me off.

I appreciate it wouldn't be as easy as selling it, because then it might be built on and you wouldn't have the control of how it was used around you, but the maintenance of it would just be enormously costly and inconvenient, surely. And even if you could afford it, the mental load of having to be on top of it feels like way too much.

Do people wanting and affording these kinds of houses want that much land too? (Appreciate there are people who want horses and stables, but this doesn't look like the current set-up here - though appreciate you could maybe add all of that).

What a strange question. Who needs a house that size as you're asking.... It's huge and hideous just like the cars on the drive etc, all very footballer looking. Of course you'd want the land to go with it and if you had £3 million you'd be able to afford staff. It'll be privacy and status obviously.

I'd love it - if I could afford a team of gardeners as well!!

Why do people want anything?

Well, even if you don’t have a specific use for it, like horses, rewilding, or growing produce, it means no one can build close to your house, which is a huge relief.

My fantasy is for a small but well insulated house on a huge plot of land. No neighbours within earshot would be heaven!
I would have dogs and cats and free range chickens. Think of the wildlife you could encourage!

If you have money for that kind of house you might well have money for horses or a vanity small holding. Or perhaps you just want privacy or the ability to manage the surrounding land to your own tastes. Nobody "needs" a house that big and nobody "needs" that much land but if you can afford to maintain it, it's a pleasant luxury to have.

I would love a house with all that land )never ever going to happen) I'd have a team of gardeners to help me tend to a kitchen garden, a formal garden and an area for the kids to play football etc.

Would probably have a horse as well as would have the space for it.

You know why people want land, these faux naïve "golly gosh" posts are so annoying. Admit this is just a humblebrag that you're out buying a million pound house.

10 acres would give you a lot of privacy and mean you have some control over any development that could take place very close by. I completely understand why someone would want that (I have an acre but would love more).

And I don’t like the house at all — at first I thought it was modern trying to ape old, but at least some of it is eighteenth century, so I suppose it’s just unsympathetically restored…?

It's layout is rubbish - who wants an enormous underground car park where the entrance is via the living room? And the wine cellar and cloakroom are too. Basically the sitting room is a hallway. And that "snug" - why? It makes the room it is cut out of a really awkward shape. The ground floor layout really needs rethinking.

One would walk a fair way during the day, and some steps as well as the stairs. May not suit an older person. No lift? Does it really have a large loo directly off the Sitting Room?

Fair enough, sounds like my question isn't one that others would ask, or want to discuss. That's totally fair.

I did put in my original post that I appreciate the privacy and control issue, because you'd be able to ensure no one built on it / was close to you / etc. But I also said that I personally would find that stressful. If I had that kind of money and wanted that kind of house (like, let's say I win the lottery tomorrow), I'd personally find it a burden to have all that land to look after. Maybe if I was a horsey person I'd think differently.

@MonsteraMama - If I wanted to humblebrag about buying a million-pound house, wouldn't I just share houses of £1m and ask questions about them? Why would I share something so extravagant like this?

Yes, my budget is up to £750k. I'm very lucky to be in that position. Take it as a humblebrag or however best suits you.

I'd want to have plans for every part of the land, and it would be lovely to think about the different wildlife and how you'd maintain or landscape it. But then I think how much mental load that would be!

Maybe it's like my solution above - win the lottery and then be able to worry about these things because I wouldn't have to worry about working too 😃. (Note to self: start playing the lottery asap)l

Also, lol. It has an air source heat pump. You might have three million quid but you will never, ever be warm.

I'd find that awfully done up house far more stressful than the beautiful land that goes with it.

I also thought it odd that there was only one (but massive) loo downstairs and that it was through the hall and off the sitting room. Think I'd rather have two tiny ones in more convenient places.

That house is awful. Someone has destroyed what was once a beautiful building and added bits all over the place on with no thought for aesthetics. What a mess.

It's a nice area though.

Ah, interesting! See my thought about the house is that I'd just enjoy it. I'd make it more child-friendly and then just chill. (Though maybe that's in comparison to my current house, which is very old and a moneypit).

I'd be hoping the modernisations to this house would make it easier to run and maintain - maybe I'm naive there!

Hahahah! I had not seen the 'sensual' bit. That made me laugh.

My aunt had/has a property with a lot of land and so did her sister (my other aunt).

First aunt grew a lot of fruit and veggies. And had chickens and a duck pond and koi carp pond. When they moved the chickens were rehomed. The other sister had a business in the grounds.

DH Grandmother grew up in a house with approx 5 acres of land, not farmers. It was only sold off recently so I got 20 years of holidays being able to wander about in woodland, Wade in the river without seeing another soul. It really was lovely. There was a farm over the river and then no neighbours at all for about 3 miles. I like people but it’s nice never ever being disturbed.

Ok, you've got me with the woodland idea. Woods and a river are maybe much more up my street.
