Amazing house - but who needs so much land?

SequinBear · 03/09/2024 09:13

Disclaimer - not my house, and also not a house I'm looking to buy. I'm looking in this kind of area, but my budget is significantly lower (less than a third of this house).

This house is obviously awesome, and I love all the luxury touches like the underground garage, the (freshwater?) pool, the alcohol pantry, etc.

But even if I could afford it and want it (it's also a bit too remote for me), who on earth needs 10 acres of land? That amount of land would actually put me off.

I appreciate it wouldn't be as easy as selling it, because then it might be built on and you wouldn't have the control of how it was used around you, but the maintenance of it would just be enormously costly and inconvenient, surely. And even if you could afford it, the mental load of having to be on top of it feels like way too much.

Do people wanting and affording these kinds of houses want that much land too? (Appreciate there are people who want horses and stables, but this doesn't look like the current set-up here - though appreciate you could maybe add all of that).

The house is false and horrid, but a lovely old house with masses of land would be my dream.
Kitchen garden, chickens, bees, wildflower meadow, outdoor eating areas, games area. Loads of things I would do with the space.

Doggymummar · 03/09/2024 09:48

I think it's beautiful, surprised to see no pool or stables, but no reason they can't be added. 16000a month mortgage is a bit steep for me though. I'd have to make it into a commune with 4 other couples.

Imicola · 03/09/2024 09:49

If I could afford it (which I definitely can't) I'd like a large plot of land. I'd add an orchard, with some beehives, a wildflower meadow, a polytunnel or large greenhouses and some outdoor soft fruit and veg growing areas. I might even get some goats, pigs and chickens. I may need to give up my work though, to look after it all...I kind of get the feeling that whoever buys this house is not going to want to use the land in that way though...

Laughtillyoupee · 03/09/2024 09:49

After being woken by my fecking neighbours arguing at midnight last night - again - 10 acres is quite appealing to me today!

There's a 'pond' in pic 55 that looks like it's used as a pool. Agree it's beautiful. I'd love it and wouldn't need animals to fill that land, happy just to wander and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Anoisagusaris · 03/09/2024 09:51

We’ve more land than that but don’t ‘do’ anything much with it. Have garden space that needs the grass to be cut, kids can play football, have trampoline and swing set. But that’s it. No manicured lawns or flowerbeds….just whatever grows naturally. The rest is woodland. Doesn’t cost us anything!

Mumistiredzzzz · 03/09/2024 09:55

I'm sure if you use your imagination you can come up with some ideas for why people might want or like a large amount of land.

DonttouchthatLarry · 03/09/2024 10:00

We used to have horses but would still like the land for the dogs - how lovely to just go off wandering around your own fields without coming across other people, dogs, bikes etc.

OneFastDuck · 03/09/2024 10:01

10 acres is really not that big. You're not going to spend hours getting lost in it and it's not miles away from neighbours.

It's be great for safe space for small kids, put a small wood area in, do some camping, orchard, grow stuff.
Chickens, bees etc.

To pp who questioned lack of stables. It not really big enough for that many horses. You have to rotate fields, build a menage, then manage muck heap etc. It's sometimes harder to keep just 2 horses at home than 4 at a big yard. You could probs get some ponies.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 03/09/2024 10:03

If someone wants to buy it for me I wouldn't say no.

Oh! That just sounds gorgeous and so dreamy. Ok, if this house had that, I'd be in (let's ignore the finances 😁).

And I don’t like the house at all — at first I thought it was modern trying to ape old, but at least some of it is eighteenth century, so I suppose it’s just unsympathetically restored…?

I thought this too. What on earth have they done to it? It has no character at all.

I genuinely thought it was a new build it was so characterless.

SequinBear · 03/09/2024 10:09

I'm sure if you use your imagination you can come up with some ideas for why people might want or like a large amount of land.

Surely you've realised from this thread that I actually couldn't, and that some people have given lovely ideas that I would have never thought of. All I was thinking of was horses and just wanting privacy, and that because I wouldn't necessarily be enjoying those myself, I'd find the land stressful.

I've literally come here to ask question, and lots of people have helpfully answered. And I've enjoyed the discussion.

I'd like a house with that much land. Mostly for distance from neighbours TBH.

SequinBear · 03/09/2024 10:12

Interesting about so many people not liking the house itself. I admit I would want to rearrange a few things and I'd redecorate a bit, but overall I actually really like it.

Hoppingblackbird · 03/09/2024 10:12

The land, yes, but what have they done to the house…? It’s so, so ugly. No character or soul. All that wood and outdated spotlights in the ceiling. It is seriously boring and plain.
But I’d love the land!

jennylamb1 · 03/09/2024 10:14

The 10 acres pretty much guarantees privacy and seclusion which is attractive. No worries about development or noise (even in rural locations there is the danger of noisy farm work, bringing in the hay at all hours at the moment for instance).
The house is obviously dreadful and footballer tasteless.

wobblyweasel · 03/09/2024 10:15

Would love having all that land, but no thank you to the house! My dream would be a very old cottage with 3/4 bedrooms, a room for all my books, and loads of land to have a couple of sheep and goats, chickens and a ball throwing machine for my border collie x

LaPalmaLlama · 03/09/2024 10:16

Friends have 9 acres- probably about 2 acres of garden- that is a PITA- but the rest is paddocks and they just have a grazing agreement with a farmer who puts sheep on there in return for maintaining it.

Shodan · 03/09/2024 10:17

I'd love a large plot of land.

I'd keep chickens and goats and bees and have an orchard and a large kitchen garden but mostly I'd stride about it saying "this is my land, and this is my land, and that over there is my land too".

Also I want a ride on mower.

HelpMePlease1981 · 03/09/2024 10:17

I have a friend with a similar house they have horses, small farm animals, rent some land out and plan on growing their own produce.

Startingagainandagain · 03/09/2024 10:19

Land would mean peace and privacy.

I would also have horses and other animals, a pond, heated swimming pool and lots of vegetables.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 03/09/2024 10:24

Oh my gosh. So many things you could do with 10 acres.
Dig a pond and keep Carybara's (or stock it with fish I suppose if you want to be boring)
Plant a hazel wood and coppice it
Put in a couple of shepherds huts and air B&B them
Rent it to a forest school

Thats just off the top of my head

Okayornot · 03/09/2024 10:27

I have a couple of acres and would love to buy 10 or so more, primarily to protect our peace as there is loads of green field development everywhere.
I'll just let it to a farmer for grazing.

meeeeeee1234 · 03/09/2024 10:29

I thought for such a large house the kitchen area is really small.

It also feels so spacious that they haven't quite known how to fill the space, so have just put tables and chairs everywhere. I mean, look at photo 26, what's that all about? A random chair against a wall and 2 chairs & a table similar to what you get at a pub!
