Amazing house - but who needs so much land?

SequinBear · 03/09/2024 09:13

Disclaimer - not my house, and also not a house I'm looking to buy. I'm looking in this kind of area, but my budget is significantly lower (less than a third of this house).

This house is obviously awesome, and I love all the luxury touches like the underground garage, the (freshwater?) pool, the alcohol pantry, etc.

But even if I could afford it and want it (it's also a bit too remote for me), who on earth needs 10 acres of land? That amount of land would actually put me off.

I appreciate it wouldn't be as easy as selling it, because then it might be built on and you wouldn't have the control of how it was used around you, but the maintenance of it would just be enormously costly and inconvenient, surely. And even if you could afford it, the mental load of having to be on top of it feels like way too much.

Do people wanting and affording these kinds of houses want that much land too? (Appreciate there are people who want horses and stables, but this doesn't look like the current set-up here - though appreciate you could maybe add all of that).

Bar the area I think its lovely and well presented.

Nevermind91 · 03/09/2024 10:31

This property epitomises a lot of what is wrong with the world.
The pictures show little more than an ostentatious attempt to cover ten acres of beautiful British countryside in brash symbols of misplaced wealth.

Oh my gosh. So many things you could do with 10 acres.
Dig a pond and keep Carybara's (or stock it with fish I suppose if you want to be boring)
Plant a hazel wood and coppice it
Put in a couple of shepherds huts and air B&B them
Rent it to a forest school

Thats just off the top of my head

>and keep Carybara

That’s living the dream right there!

Also, alpacas. Start a small petting zoo.

The land would be brilliant for big, energetic dogs.

Janedoe82 · 03/09/2024 10:33

It is just an asset. Land adds value.

PetrichorSoul · 03/09/2024 10:34

So much beige Hmm

Shodan · 03/09/2024 10:17

I'd love a large plot of land.

I'd keep chickens and goats and bees and have an orchard and a large kitchen garden but mostly I'd stride about it saying "this is my land, and this is my land, and that over there is my land too".

Also I want a ride on mower.

Your post made me laugh 😂

I think it is lovely. If I had the money would buy it.

I had to google to be sure as I didn't realise capybaras went in water so much. Turns out they're semi-aquatic. Everyday's a school day!

I'm loving the woods and forest school idea.

Totally agree, the Ferraris everywhere, omg, it's just cringe worthy

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/09/2024 10:39

Was expecting hundreds of acres. 10 isn’t very much. Ideal if you want horses or other hobby livestock.

Yeah, that I agree with. Plus that the video tour has a drone following the yellow car going up the drive into the underground garage.

Guess that's the market they think they should appeal to.

Most owners would lease the fields to local farmers. That generates a modest income, takes care of the maintenance concern but also helps you build relationships with established neighbours.

For a footballer type house I think that one is lovely. I’m not keen on unpainted second fixings but I understand they’ve probably spent a fortune on oak so don’t want to cover it up. Is still paint it regardless. I’m not keen on the media wall but I think they’ve made nice choices for the most part and it is warm and welcoming and makes the most of its situation.

Yeah, I agree with this (about the house being nice). I also found it quite warm and there's enough 'stuff' for it to feel homely and comfy, without it looking cluttered. And I like the blue against the pine in the kitchen.

Why would you be so stressed. One of my neighbours has this amount of land, they just have someone manage it. It’s not a big deal.

Sunshineandtequila · 03/09/2024 10:46

By the way I think the house is beautiful.

op the fields will be cut twice a year, someone will bale it, take the hay or sillage, likely for free. Thats the normal way,

KievLoverTwo · 03/09/2024 10:48

I hope they have cast iron security at this house, because I am sure some car thiefs would be very interested in it.

Yep
You need a to dig a big pond, build a nice warm shed and a Capybara proof fence. Then a man from the Scottish Government (If you're in Scotland) has to come and check its all good enough before you get your Capybara license.
I've looked into this

CrystalDeCanter · 03/09/2024 10:51

I'd bulldoze it and build something that wasn't hideous. The land is pretty.

rumblegrumble · 03/09/2024 10:55

Don't mind the front of the house but the back's awful. And not anywhere near enough land! I'd love my own little kingdom to prowl, with lakes, and rivers, and woodlands... though I'd prefer a smaller, cosier house to go with it. And dogs and horses of course to keep me company. I spend way more time than I should idly daydreaming about it!

ComeAgainPlease · 03/09/2024 11:01

I'd want that land to have no-one else within 10 acres of me ... and to play in! There are many benefits to being able to do what you want, where you want, when you want.

Bedrooms 3-5 are ridculously small for a £3m pound house. Very badly designed.

10 acres isn't much. Enough for a nice surrounding garden, a veg garden and a paddock for a couple of horses.

Why would people want that much space? Peace and quiet. Horses, dogs, donkeys, chickens, geese, ducks. Space to plant an orchard, build a large greenhouse/ poly tunnel and grow all your own fruit and veg. No noisy or nosy neighbours. The ability to play the drums or have massive noisy parties without the neighbours/ police coming round. Being able to look out of your windows on all sides and not see other people in other houses looking back at you. A feeling of being away from the world and being able to create your own fantasy. (Which is what has clearly been going on in this house)

Lemanoir · 03/09/2024 11:13

10 acres is not that much, if you stood in the middle you could see your boundaries very easily. We are on 9
acres and discounted a neighbouring property that had 16 acres as having too much land. We were fools!

I have bees, goats, chickens, an orchard, fruit & veg gardens, a meadow. Would love a couple of cows but husband drew the line at the goats. That’s probably enough for 9 acres.

OneFastDuck · 03/09/2024 11:15

I think a lot of you have no idea how much 10 acres is. It's not that much at all!
