Roof cleaning cost

Peonies007 · 13/08/2024 11:13

We have 7x7m house (total floor area 49sqmx2), so not huge.
I'm looking to get roof cleaned and nust had a quote of 3k! This doesn't include rubbish removal or any equipment. We are in SE.
Before I go back and tell them they are taking the , how much dis you pay?
Thanks

Doesn't the rain do this?

It does. We have lots of moss though

I didn’t know this was a thing!!

Frasers · 13/08/2024 11:25

I considered this, looked about 3 years go. Quote was 6k, albeit larger house. Neighbours had had it done. And also sprayed for the moss not to come back. They said don’t do it, as it causes the water to come in to the attic. 3 years later it’s as filthy as ours. Sure no moss yet but it’s black.

total waste of money, glad we didn’t do it.

People don't realise when they have their roof cleaned it causes a lot of the tiles to crack and dislodge due to the pressure washer. Resulting in leaks. It looks great once it's done but it's more bother than what it's worth.

Yes this is exactly what happened to my neighbours.

Chewbecca · 13/08/2024 11:33

I have never had a roof cleaned. I don't think it is necessary.

Mindymomo · 13/08/2024 11:38

Quite a few houses near me have had it done, one 3 years ago, but now only looks slightly brighter than the next doors one. It does make a hell of a mess on the ground and they don’t seem to clean that afterwards, but leave the debris. I would leave well alone.

It depends how you get it cleaned.
You have pressure washer - total no.
Steam cleaner - maybe, depends on tiles.
Hand picking moss - yes, but only if they have cherry picked so no one steps on actual roof.

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors Ltd recommends NOT removing moss and basically suggests that anyone who offers to do so is a scammer.

Are you Worried about Moss on your Roof? (nfrc.co.uk)

Correct, but we have so much that it's blocking gutters.

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 13/08/2024 11:44

I would just get the gutters cleaned.

Frasers · 13/08/2024 11:44

Sorry op. You’re not being clear. Are you saying the price is for someone to hand pick the moss off on a cherry picker?

The price quoted was for..
Hand picking based on ladder (cherry picker extra).
Rubbish removal extra
Guttering extra

Ah ok everyone assumed you meant power washing.

personally i have my gutters cleaned twice a year, but if you want someone to pick it all off by hand on a ladder then I’d say 3 grand is a bargain.

My husband cleans roofs. Perfectly safe to get it done and it makes a huge difference. He doesn't use a pressure washer. He scrapes it all off and tidies it all up after himself. He only charges a few hundred but we are in Scotland. It depends on the size of the roof and how accessible etc it is.

It's 50sqm floorplan. I would have wxpected price in region of £1200 plus vat.
Do you know how many days does it normally take? And does he use a ladder or picker?
Thanks

He uses a ladder, he goes up on the roof and does it. It's a lot of hard work. He charged £1.5k a few weeks ago but it was a large house and it took him 5 full days (late finishes etc).

Gosh, 5 days is a lot! I would estimate ours 2 days.
I don't mind paying if that's the going rate, but the quote seems enormous.
Maybe I will investigate roof replacement as roof is from 1981 and will need doing at some point.

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 13/08/2024 12:37

Roofs can last a lot longer than 40 years, wait until it is needed to do a full roof replacement! Many roofs from the 1920/1930s are going strong 100 years on with minor repairs.

Frasers · 13/08/2024 22:23

Blimey don’t replace your roof just as it’s got moss on it 😱

Did you get it done in end? I've got same problem gutters blocked from moss and roof covered in it, been quoted 1650 for 3bed detached

SensibleSigma · 14/12/2024 13:38

I wonder why it’s a problem now. I’d never heard of it, but moss if falling off the roof in chunks and making the patio muddy.

We booked someone who then gone AWOL. So still have moss on roof. They are someone my BIL used and were just under 1k.

they they probably swapped you for a better paying job
£1k for the size you mention in the SE is "cheap"
