Just saw a really interesting 1960s house

I know many people go for period properties but I do really like some 1960s houses. This one, the interior hasn't been touched since then and it has a very "mid-century modern" feel to it.

It has 3/4 acre garden and is £450k in Knottingley, W Yorks

(no connection with the property - just saw it online)

Interestingly it looks like the person who lives there may be an architect, perhaps they could design new stairs for the buyer.

Love this!

Not RTFT but I swear that house was in Outlander. When Claire was near death and imagining all her family there

I don't know about the house in the op being on tv, but house number 13 on this link was used in a sci fi film. I went to view it (the house, not the film) a couple of years ago and really wish now that I'd bought it.

The house was very similar but I believe that one was up in Scotland somewhere.

I would absolutely love a MCM sideboard but they tend to be huge instead I settled for this

Go to photo number 6 and tell me that doesn't look like a primary school

I went and looked. At first I thought you were talking about photo number 9 with the multi-coloured flooring; that really does remind me of my primary school.

But I sort of get what you mean. The primary school I went to was opened in 1965 and the outside was indeed very much like that (although with bigger windows).

You can get an impression of what the school looked like from behind us as very young people here:

how lovely! there are houses like that in Old Hatfield and I always wondered what they would be/are like inside

masomenos · 02/08/2024 13:05

I love this style too, and think the reason it resonates with us (assuming we’re all born in the 70s/80s!) is because it’s how those in charge when we were children used to live. These simple, practical homes make me feel secure, like I’m living an uncluttered life free of stuff and free of worries!

Oddly, though, I’ve always thought Japanese art goes best with this architecture and design. Clean lines, lots of nature, texture in textiles, harmony, again unfussy and uncluttered. I’ve clearly spent too much time designing my perfect house (only in my mind though!!).

I never expected to see a five page thread about the house my dad built and that I grew up in, on Mumsnet! Flattered and also amused by the comments. I think dad did get a handrail for the spiral, but never got round to fitting it, but I haven't found it yet! He still insisted on using those stairs when he was 91, it stressed me out, my brother bought him a Ring doorbell to stop him from going downstairs when no one else was there.

Awesome. Is the kitchen original?

housethatbuiltme · 16/08/2024 17:36

I wanted to like it as I find original, antique, vintage and retro stuff cool and think history should be preserved but I just couldn't.

Personally I find it hideous and its not for me but I hope someone who likes that style buys it and keeps it historically fitting though.

Dilbertian · 16/08/2024 18:07

The kitchen is painted in exactly the colour scheme of the house I grew up in. Mine was built in the 20s, so I suspect the kitchen was refurbished in the 60s, as the similarity is uncanny! We moved in in the 70s and my parents stripped the kitchen out in the 80s. I always missed that lovely, sunny colour.

Dilbertian · 16/08/2024 18:09

...of the kitchen in the house I grew up in...

The whole house was not yellow and white!

It is! It's been exactly the same since it was built, except the oven and cooker got replaced and they cut a cupboard in two to fit a microwave. My mum still has the yellow paint and it hasn't dried out. The cupboards are all bright red inside.

CormorantStrikesBack · 16/08/2024 19:19

That’s great. My step mother had what looked like identical cupboards until recently and my MIL still does but a bright blue rather than yellow. Her kitchen is older than Dh and he’s 60! 😁

That’s so cool. Must be a real surprise to see this on here being discussed.

It’s a very cool house. I love it.

We still have that sideboard, it's in the garage full of pasta

This is amazing. I love that house and I would love a bright yellow kitchen. Fantastic that it's all exactly as it was.

Wellieswithsocks · 16/08/2024 23:20

@smiinky must you sell it? I wouldn’t want to in your shoes! It’s beautiful

smiinky · 16/08/2024 23:46

We accepted an offer last week. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly because I need to get mum moved pronto, she isn't getting any younger and she's not happy here since we lost dad. Everyone who viewed specifically wanted a mid century modern house, which is the reason I chose that estate agent, over the local ones, I had three of them over. By their faces they'd never seen a house like this and obviously didn't think there was a market for them, so how would they sell it? As for me, I've lived on a narrowboat with my partner for 18 years and I can't see that changing, I love it too much and I like small spaces. (Talk about rebelling against your parents lol!).

Fair enough! Hopefully the new owners will love and care for it as well as your parents have. Hope the move goes smoothly for your mum.

sugarbyebye · 17/08/2024 09:54

Hope the move goes well for your mum!

Papyrophile · 17/08/2024 12:14

This is a lovely outcome for an enjoyable thread. I hope your mum is very happy in her new home, and that the new owners cherish the house.

Thank you! Love anything like this, I went to a wonderful exhibition of Althea McNish exhibition of mid century textiles a few years back (I bought a cushion and it brings me joy each day!)

Was that at the Wm Morris museum in Walthamstow? I went to that: wonderful exhibition. I wish I had bought a cushion.
