Just saw a really interesting 1960s house

I know many people go for period properties but I do really like some 1960s houses. This one, the interior hasn't been touched since then and it has a very "mid-century modern" feel to it.

It has 3/4 acre garden and is £450k in Knottingley, W Yorks

I’m meh about the exterior, but the interior is lovely. Right up my street. I’d keep that kitchen, it’s fabulous.

LunaTheCat · 30/07/2024 23:20

Oh goodness it is glorious! I hope someone buys it and doesn’t change.
I would move for that home ( and I live in New Zealand!)

bozzabollix · 30/07/2024 23:20

I own a house a bit like that. Yes it does burn through gas, but it’s worth it. I think the calming feel is the large windows with light and also the flow, they did open plan really well then.

No asbestos in ours either, we got it checked.

I'd want Don Draper with a northern accent pouring me a martini whilst Burt Bacharach toons play in the background to make the house perfect.

Lunaballoon · 31/07/2024 14:13

There are a lot of 1960s-70s gems like this in Yorkshire. Check this one out too. Different price bracket, mind.

Every new link that gets posted keeps getting better and better, they are all gorgeous.

EdithStourton · 31/07/2024 14:25

Otuside ugly, interior wonderfully light, but it has the usual issue of the era: the kitchen is a place of internal exile.

I like a separate kitchen, hate the modern open plan kitchen / diner / living room. I want cooking mess shut away.

I think the outsides of these houses are fabulous - the way they integrate with the landscape is perfect.

It's gorgeous! Reminds me of our first house that we outgrew:-(

I am very much with @TheLeadbetterLife , I much prefer all the mess of cooking and baking kept separate.

"...a place of internal exile."

If anything, I think of it more as a place of internal sanctuary. Sometimes I need a bit of space to myself and closing the kitchen door really helps.

That's my mother's dinning table and chairs and sideboard. Wow! At least I now know there is a market for this sort of thing. It's been beautifully done.

Parkly · 31/07/2024 19:45

I absolutely love that!

I moved last year from an Edwardian house to one built in 1969. I wasn't sure at first, but living here has brought back lovely memories of the house I lived in as a child.

I'm now trying to embrace the period, and decorate the house in keeping with the period. (And if anyone has any suggestions for good websites to trawl for suitable furniture/accessories, I will be forever grateful!)

If you google something like "Danish mid century modern furniture" then you will get a good mix of second hand, vintage and new furniture.

One example of new furniture, (where I may have bought a dining table and chairs myself) is:

https://fisheandlilly.com/collections/dining-room

or:

https://loopandtwist.com/products/soho-chair-walnut

But, seriously, just google something like "mid century modern [type of furniture eg dining room table]" and see what it brings up.

[EDIT]

Yes, I also lived in a similar house as a child back in the 1970s.

Love the dining room. That house is pure class. I’d want the furniture too haha !

That is beautiful, creates a yearning in me!

Did anyone else see the 'pure butter' dish full of oranges and get irrationally angry?

Or the bedside lights, only one of which can illuminate a bed?

DETAILS, PEOPLE!

It's very cool though.

I've just spent an inordinate amount of time looking for the oranges! Which picture are they on??

Picture 14, to the left of the chair.

With kindness: you need to get a life as much as I do.

Ikeatears · 01/08/2024 11:33

@KievLoverTwo haha this I know! I’m now off to search for the oranges…
