Opinions on these curtains please

These lovely curtains are too long and unlined.

Would it be madness to buy them and try to take them up myself (no machine and limited sewing skills!) and buy and attach blackout lining? 😬

Also, what about the top slot thing - will they be a pain to open a close? I suspect these are designed for curtains that don't get so much use but these are for a bedroom and I'm desperate to make them work as they cost a fraction of made to measure! Can't find anything readymade that works for our space. 😕

Sorry, I don’t like them. They look like the striped pyjama trousers old men wear.

Thewonderful · 24/06/2024 21:07

They come in different lengths, have they got something closer to what you need then just move your curtain pole a bit

Notellinganyone · 24/06/2024 21:42

I think they’re lovely and very good value.

I think they're horrible ... (Sorry.) They look like caravan curtains.

I actually like them and nearly bought then but my other half said they belonged in a chalet by the sea. So I didn't.

SeeThatOne · 24/06/2024 23:12

Are any of the length close to what you need? Can you alter the height of the curtain rail.

I don't know what people are trying to achieve by telling the OP that they don't like the curtains. The OP didn't ask. It's a strange and mean spirited thing to do.

Billyballyboo · 25/06/2024 11:47

Really nice. Just let them pool on the floor.

BasiliskStare · 25/06/2024 11:56

I agree with @twentysevendresses keep them closed but with tie backs / hooks - I think they look to me like a pain in the neck to keep drawing and closing over the pole .
That would be the easy way - otherwise I would do as others have said and shorten from the top and you could hand sew some tape on which allows you to attach rings which will glide over the pole.
Others have given better advice than me about blinds / ling etc

But I do like the curtains 😊

gardenmusic · 25/06/2024 12:16

I had slot once, and decided never again. They would not glide, I had to stand on a chair to drag them along.
It would work if they were decorative, rather than functional.
Would you be able to try and return if they won't glide on your rod/pole?

oakleaffy · 25/06/2024 14:53

lollypoppy123 · 24/06/2024 15:26

Ah, yes, I know what you mean and think this looks lovely but had not thought to do this. Thank you too for the blackout lining link.

What do you think about the top slot opening? Don't think they'll glide smoothly but is that a big problem?

The top looked horrible. Stripes fine...Top all bunched and like they'd drag.
Pencil pleat tape and hooks makes for a much neater looking, and will give a smoooooth draw and open.

NomadAlone · 25/06/2024 20:10

As a PP suggested, I would go with separate blackout blinds in the recess of the window then you don’t even need to close the curtains unless you want to.
Dunelm do a lot of blackout blinds which are good value and they even do no screw ones which can be stuck on instead of having to drill holes.

Hedgeoffressian · 25/06/2024 20:20

Rainydayinlondon · 24/06/2024 15:22

I think they’re lovely. No need to shorten… you can just have them puddling on the floor

Don’t do this. It will look awful, and with that colour they will look dirty too. They are fairly inoffensive and it won’t cost much to get them taken up.

AppleStrudel23 · 25/06/2024 20:32

I'm doing my own blackout lining at the moment! I've done half of my curtains. It's dead easy and I'm rubbish at sewing

steppemum · 25/06/2024 20:35

slot tops do NOT glide and do NOT open and close, so you need to decide to either have the tops closed and loop the sides back, or alter them.

Curtains are really easy to alter for anyone who sews, and to shorten from the top and add header tape is a quick and easy job.

So I would buy them and ask aroudn if anyone can help (I'd do it for you if you are in Wiltshire)

I would wear those.

I'm afraid I agree. They are horrible. Like a butchers apron.

frequentlyfrazzled · 26/06/2024 09:20

I also think a separate recessed blackout blind is the way forward if you are set on these curtains. You can get really cheap roller blackout blinds from Dunelm or DIY stores etc, and they can usually be altered to fit if your window is not a standard size.
If you don't have good sewing skills/access to a sewing machine to hem the curtains you can use iron on hemming tape instead. (e.g. Wundaweb).

CaMcC · 26/06/2024 10:50

I have top slot curtains in my bedroom. You have to lift the curtains up as you're pulling them open and closed or they catch on the rod. Definitely recommend a fixed width rod and not an adjustable one. My curtains make the rod come apart in the middle about once a month as they pull on the adjustable end of the rod until it gradually loosens and falls out of the non adjustable end. If I don't catch it in time the curtains fall off the rod. Keep meaning to find some sort of invisible tape that will hold the curtain rod closed but haven't done yet.

lollypoppy123 · 26/06/2024 13:36

Thanks all for your brilliant advice. I'm going to get a price for shortening them from the top and attaching pencil pleat heading. Am confident that will save me a shedload of money so thanks for all the great ideas and inspiration.

I have the cream linford table cloth, I love it.

Waffle78 · 27/06/2024 15:47

They remind me of pyjamas sorry I don't like them. White isn't a good colour to get either. After a while they will look grubby.

GogAndMagog · 27/06/2024 15:50

There seem to be lots of shorter drops though?

What an unkind and unnecessary thing to say! Did you mean to be so hurtful?
incidentally, I think they are lovely!

What is the matter with people? I am only in the first page and already people are saying they dislike the curtains! Cruel or what?
if you have nothing nice or helpful to say, then shut up!!

Viviennemary · 25/06/2024 22:45

What is up with you? What a shit*y thing to say. How would you like it if someone said it to you?

Ilikeadrink14 · 27/06/2024 19:59

Lollypoppy
I can’t believe the number of people who have replied to you. Not to answer your sensible question, but to go out of their way to say they don’t like the curtains! I do hope you haven’t taken these nasty comments to heart? Of COURSE everyone isn’t going to like them - we all have different tastes. But for people to make a real effort to get out from under their stones just to be nasty, well, I am amazed and disgusted. Do they feel good about themselves after that, I wonder?
The curtains will look lovely with a top gathering, but I am biased, never having gone for top slot curtains myself. Hope you get them up and running soon.😃
