Moving to coast-ish

I am currently in the South East and am looking to find somewhere to buy. House prices down here are ridiculous so I am looking further afield to find an area that is either rural-ish or within 40 minutes of the coast but still access to a town within 15 minutes - ideally 4 bedrooms for under 475k. Is this even remotely possible? Whereabouts in England would you recommend?

No idea about England but South Wales (Vale of Glamorgan) ticks all those boxes.

Have you looked in Norfolk? Great beaches within 30 - 50 minutes of Norwich so lots of places where you can be both within 15 minutes of a (nice) city while being well within 40 minutes of the coast.

East Kent? Definitely possible in nice-ish areas, actually on the coast.

We live in norfolk as incomers.
Coastal communities are justifiably angry at housing prices being out of the reach of incomers.
Our village is going to be joined to the local town soon as we currently have 1800 dwelling being built.

I was suggesting more looking at a village in north or east Norfolk.
Pretty sure at this point no one local can afford a house on the coast in North Norfolk, mostly Londoner second homes!
But Aylsham, North Walsham, Ormesby, Stalham, Wroxham and North/East Norwich and surrounds all fit what OP wants. I'm from Norwich and recently bought here but Stalham and nearby was coming up not too bad price wise.

We're closest to King's Lynn, town centre is dire, but the beach is about a 15 minute drive away and, is glorious in the summer.
Ely might be another consideration. We were there last weekend. It was beautiful

Do you need schools?

I would second Kent.

I live in Deal, a lovely seaside town, and you could also look at: Sandwich, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate and Folkestone.

You can then stay in the SE and travel to London fairly easily when you need to.

East Yorkshire, easy drive to the coast, easy to get to York, the Dales and the North York Moors. Beverley would probably fit the bill, it’s a lovely town, similar to York only smaller, has a train station which many smaller towns don’t, decent transport links, good restaurants and shops. Property prices are excellent and you’d easily get what you’re looking for within budget.

The north east. I live 7 miles from Newcastle, 7 miles from Durham and can drive to the coast in 25 mins. I can be in the Lake District in 90 and then there’s the whole of Northumberland…!

I meant to add, East Yorkshire has easy access to the N Yorks coast, Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington are all within an hours drive, with Whitby a bit further but doable in a day.

Somerset as long as you look away from Bruton and most of Bath. Lovely county that's becoming more popular and plenty of places close to the coast. But be aware we have slower broadband, rubbish phone signals and holiday traffic. Also on the Levels where I am you have to be aware of the flood risk. All that taken into account it's lovely and I'm so glad we moved here 5 years ago from Hertfordshire

If you want to stay in south East what about Hastings? Houses are cheaper there than where I live in Yorkshire!
Otherwise I'd suggest areas near Yorkshire coast or Northumberland coast. Beautiful there.

I think the owners of Saga have put a lot of investment into Folkestone and that may be worth a look. It also has high speed rail to London if you ever need to be back.

Newcastle. You would struggle to get a really fabulous 4 bed in a very, very nice area of Tynemouth or Newcastle for that price but you could get a good 4 bed in a good area for that - either walkable to the beach or 15 mins from the city. The city and beach are well connected by public transport and road. There are more rural - ish villages around with good road and rail links including small towns on the east coast mainline such as Morpeth and alnmouth.

Do you need access to London or any particular town for family/work? My immediate thought was Norfolk, but even North Essex, villages around Colchester or Ipswich or other parts of Suffolk.

On the train line to Norwich, on the coast road bus route to Cromer / Sheringham, has village shop, post office and pub, right on the coast on a great beach

No, should have said. Schools aren't an issue but a good internet and mobile signal is.

I do love the idea of Yorkshire or Northumberland Coast but wouldn't know where to start in terms of where to look. Where would you suggest for a nice 4 bedroom house with a garden, some privacy but not too remote?
