I wasn't sure if this is the right place, but I was a huge fan of the series.

Just posting if anyone else was interested

Before you buy any, or all of these houses..

@Pemba it really annoys me when they use Chatsworth as Pemberly. As it's mentioned in its own right in the book. Went to Lyme park and was very disappointed that you can't do the same drive that Elizabeth and the Gardiners do on the BBC film.

@Toddlerteaplease Oh I must have missed that, can you remember where it's mentioned? Interesting.

No doubt Mr Darcy would be a regular visitor to Chatsworth, as he's a big cheese in Derbyshire!

Chatsworth is so beautiful, though like I said surely a house as huge and grand as that would belong to a Duke or at least an Earl, as it does in real life?

MN commune anyone? I’m sure if we all chipped in we could draw lots for rooms in the main house and the cottages, and 20 acres means we could put up plenty of yurts in the fields for everyone else 😜

I reckon we could all just about buy it...but the thought of the upkeep of the place 😨. I'd think it would cost an arm and a leg to maintain, even if we dug up the grass to grow our own produce. And the utility bills would equal the economy of a small country, I'd think. Shame, it's such a fantastic thought, CaveMum. (and we can dream, can't we?)

...into one house in this neighbourhood they shall never have admittance...

I love Mr Bennet, such dry humour - and how did he put up with Mrs B. without locking himself in his library and refusing to come out?

DriftingDora · 02/05/2024 19:48

LardoBurrows ·

....on the understanding that the toilet seats were never left up and that they were gone after breakfast - no hanging around in their underpants making the place look untidy. And definitely no Cocklodgers moving in.

I love your commune idea and CaveMum's. Can we add: Leaving dirty clothes on floor = lifetime ban.

In the book, I recall it was mentioned in the context that the desire of Mrs Gardiner to see her home village of Lampton was a stronger attraction than that of Chatsworth and other places in Derbyshire.

In the tv series it was when Lizzie is making excuses not to see Pemberley as a tourist and the Gardiners trying to persuade her and comparing to other places like Chatsworth and Blenheim.

I'd love to live at Longbourn!!!

Can't get over those floor plans! A flower room...one can dream!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 20:01

Looks a tad on the small side @CaveMum 🤣

CaveMum · 02/05/2024 20:09

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout i know, it’s very inconvenient to have 20 bedrooms and only 16 bathrooms. For heavens sake, where will the people in those rooms perform their ablutions?!

But, the gardens are pretty and it IS close to Bath…

JennyForeigner · 02/05/2024 20:14

Looks like there is a very pleasant sort of wilderness to let down my petticoats refuse to disown my true feelings display my figure to advantage take a turn about in

JennyForeigner · 02/05/2024 20:16

Oh my, those garden walls...

fans self

Is it entailed?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 20:16

I reckon the annual upkeep would bankrupt some. You’d have to be a billionaire to afford it!

LardoBurrows · 02/05/2024 20:26

I think we'd all better start buying lottery tickets asap, especially in The Euro lottery.

If we grow vegetables to eat and barter, plus keep cows, pigs and hens, we might manage the upkeep. Although we might need to start growing cannabis herbs to make serious money.

Or, we run Jane Austen-Fest over one weekend every summer and charge gullible tourists fans a fortune to attend 😁

@DriftingDora this place might be a better bargain for the commune, plus we could host some pretty fancy balls to boot!

Oh wow, I'm smitten with this one - the outside view from the side of the house has a real look of Pemberley about it (waits for Darcy to emerge from the river with wet shirt - I should be so lucky). And only 13 miles from Bath! Love those vaulted ceilings and old-fashioned kitchen ranges, all a bit spooky - and the grounds are to die for. Unless Mrs Bennet says 'the attics are dreadful' I'd take this one for sure. Yes, just imagine the dinner parties and soirees we could hold here - with plenty of white soup to go round, of course. 😃

You are forgetting that some of the bedrooms are for servants. They only require hosing down each quarter day.

That always reminds me of that immortal sentence in Fifty Shades of Mr Darcy

"Mr. Bennet retired to his library and waited for television to be invented"

Like the idea of a Jane Austen/Georgian festival. Adrian Lukis (Mr Wickham) and David Bamber in attendance? I'm thinking Colin Firth might want too much money.

I do wish the late, great Benjamin Whitrow was still with us, he could bring messages from Mrs Bennet and their daughters. Perhaps Julia Sawalha could come and up-date us on what Lydia's been up to - and she could join Mr Wickham on giving us the dirt on their elopement - and what they got up to in Newcastle....

Ooh that's lovely. Bagsy the Gardener's Cottage!

lissie123 · 02/05/2024 22:33

I live nearby. I always pass the house wistfully thinking about Mr Darcy.

Perhaps the Collins line has finally faltered…

Tis a truth universally acknowledged that a house worth £30,000 a year in film and photo shoot fees is in want of a marketing manager…

😆😆
