I wasn't sure if this is the right place, but I was a huge fan of the series.

Just posting if anyone else was interested

Amazing. 20 acres. Stables. As well as rental cottages. Quite a lot for the money!

No sign of Mr Collins I hope.

useitorlose · 02/05/2024 11:27

It's stunning, but the mortgage repayment of £26k a month is a little beyond my means.

cushionfiend · 02/05/2024 11:32

It has a Flower Room AND a Loggia, I'm in! Where's that lottery ticket...

JaneJeffer · 02/05/2024 11:35

Having had to google loggia and parterre I fear I am more suited to the servants' quarters

WinterDeWinter · 02/05/2024 11:39

I think the cottage rentals would cover the upkeep (though not a new roof - wonder when that was last done?)

God, it's not often I feel actual envy but this is...

Isn't it amazing that the Bennets apparently lived in a place as fancy as this, and yet they were looked down upon as not grand enough (and not suitable marriage material), by people like Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, even initially Mr Darcy and his cousin (Colonel Fitzwilliam?). Caroline B and her sister were desperate to stop their brother marrying Jane, even though they appeared to be friendly with her.

Meanwhile, of course, most of the population were scraping by living in tiny cottages. Or starving to death of course. What a society!

That house is gorgeous.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 11:40

Oh I’d snap it up in a heartbeat. If I had the dosh - even with the west facing windows. Unfortunately I don’t!

And some brilliant comments.

Well, the Bingleys were nouveau riches, and their money was from trade, so the women were anxious to bed themselves into UC society (though it’s never entirely clear to me why rich, aristocratic, status-conscious Darcy, who stands very much on his own dignity, is such good friends with Bingley, who is far below him in status…?). The Bennets have only a life interest in Longbourn, and are just getting by — the same horses pull the family carriage as are used on the farm, and the girls will have only tiny incomes after their father’s death. Plus Mr B married down…

It's heavenly, imagine living somewhere so beautiful and with so many rooms and different views to choose from.

Since reading Longbourn I'm confident I could not have endured the life of a servant. Up at the crack of dawn emptying chamber pots, cleaning women's menstrual rags, slog, slog, slogging away.

No thanks.

I'd have set off to London and sought a career as an 'actress'. (and within 6 months ended up as a cautionary tale against a dissolute lifestyle)

Pemba · 02/05/2024 11:54

Yes I think you're right @Burnfort, though how they all seem to be know the ins and outs of each other's incomes and family circumstances beats me! Just how it was I suppose. @

WinkyTinky · 02/05/2024 11:57

I would just bloody love a viewing. That would do for me! I love how cosy and warm it looks, so far from the cold austere house it appeared to be in the series. That series is almost 30 years old, and there has never been anything better on telly since. I absolutely adore the thing 😍

Pemba · 02/05/2024 12:00

And also I do wonder if the makers of the TV shows and films quietly upgrade the houses that the characters live in, just to look impressive on screen.

Wasn't Pemberley filmed at Chatsworth House, or did I get that wrong? Would Mr Darcy's house really have been as grand as that? After all, Mr Darcy and his father were not titled, but the real owner of Chatsworth has always been the Duke of Devonshire, I think.

WinterDeWinter · 02/05/2024 12:01

I'm now wondering if you could put the sheep from the neighbouring farm on the lawn to save on groundsman's wages.

And this is why I achieve nothing.

I think Chatsworth played the exterior of Pemberley in the 2005 version. Lyme Park played it in 1995.

It was for sale a while ago - maybe 12-18 months. I wonder if it fell through, I wouldn’t be surprised as it’s got a very inconvenient sitting room for the evenings.
The dining room blows my mind because I can imagine all the cameras and crew piled into that nook in what I thought was a perfectly rectangular room. It’s an absolutely lovely house. I would have thought it would be a lot more ££.

Yes it's been up for sale on and off for ages.

I'll buy it if they can guarantee Mr Bennett and friends are moving in to Netherfield

CatherinedeBourgh · 02/05/2024 12:21

I suppose it will do for the sort of person who has to buy his own house.

FadedRed · 02/05/2024 12:24

@DriftingDora - “was there no ends to this woman’s talents?”
Well you say that, but she couldn’t play the pianoforte, could she? Even extremely poorly… 😂

TheCultureHusks · 02/05/2024 08:50

I wouldn’t buy it, it has a very small park and some of the windows face due west.

Love this.

KatherineParr · 02/05/2024 13:07

What a charming drawing room. It puts me in mind of one of the small summer breakfast rooms at Rosings.

I wonder why it isn't selling, it keeps being put on the market but no sale history listed on Rightmove.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 02/05/2024 13:12

😍🤑 I love it. Love a Georgian pile, me. Sadly, the budget doesn't stretch 😭

In the 1995 P&P Belton house in Lincolnshire was Rosings. I can’t remember if it was for all the rooms or just some of them. The Rosings gardens were belton also. Not sure if it’s belton grounds when Mr Darcy delivers Elizabeth the letter. I’ll have to rewatch!

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 02/05/2024 13:18

I would have bought it, but the lack of energy certificate has put me right off

still hoping for that lottery win! It’s lovely

Hmmm, expensive , but I could probably buy it for cash after selling my studio in zone 1.
