I wasn't sure if this is the right place, but I was a huge fan of the series.

Just posting if anyone else was interested

@DriftingDora - “was there no ends to this woman’s talents?”
Well you say that, but she couldn’t play the pianoforte, could she? Even extremely poorly… 😂

True! But she did have influence at the Inn where you changed horses for your journey ('if you mention my name...' etc.), so Lady C. was still worth knowing - and maybe there was a free drink thrown in, too? 😁

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/05/2024 13:37

I hope that the chaps at the National Trust buy it. Then we can all swan around the place stopping for luncheon on the lawns with a bottle of the finest burgundy and some delicacies that cook has prepared for us.

Isn't it amazing that the Bennets apparently lived in a place as fancy as this, and yet they were looked down upon as not grand enough (and not suitable marriage material), by people like Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, even initially Mr Darcy and his cousin (Colonel Fitzwilliam?). Caroline B and her sister were desperate to stop their brother marrying Jane, even though they appeared to be friendly with her.

Meanwhile, of course, most of the population were scraping by living in tiny cottages. Or starving to death of course. What a society!

That house is gorgeous.

Yes, it seems strange that compared to the Bingleys and Darcy, the Bennets were definitely well lower down the scale. The poor old Bennets didn't have family money behind them, their lifestyle was precarious as the estate was entailed and they were only living well while Mr Bennet survived. Once he died, the house and estate would pass to Mr Collins, and who would be mug enough to take Mrs Bennet (and her nerves) into their house - her poor brother and his wife, the Gardners, would have been lumbered with supporting her. What a thought.

OP, you take great delight in vexing me!! This has sent me into a spiral of 'I neeeeeed this house...' 🫠😭😩👒

Since reading Longbourn I'm confident I could not have endured the life of a servant. Up at the crack of dawn emptying chamber pots, cleaning women's menstrual rags, slog, slog, slogging away.

No thanks.

I'd have set off to London and sought a career as an 'actress'. (and within 6 months ended up as a cautionary tale against a dissolute lifestyle)

😂😂

AdaColeman · 02/05/2024 11:15

It's quite nice, but I'd rather have Pemberley.

I'd settle for either. 😁 A few more pics of the house and grounds would have been nice - and some of the interiors of the cottages too (don't want much, do I?😃)

I would just bloody love a viewing. That would do for me! I love how cosy and warm it looks, so far from the cold austere house it appeared to be in the series. That series is almost 30 years old, and there has never been anything better on telly since. I absolutely adore the thing 😍

Yes, but I'd need the horses to be available every day. No doing a Lizzy Bennet and trudging across the bloody wet, muddy fields to visit a sister with a cold - not for me - I go by horse or I don't go.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 13:19

That would do also. I've just had the house painted that exact colour and the stress and expense for something a 1/100 000 the size was arrgh.

My poor nerves have suffered greatly.

CaveMum · 02/05/2024 14:00

MN commune anyone? I’m sure if we all chipped in we could draw lots for rooms in the main house and the cottages, and 20 acres means we could put up plenty of yurts in the fields for everyone else 😜

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 14:01

Great thread!

Agree @MrsMoastyToasty would be fabulous if the NT bought it!

MenopauseSucks · 02/05/2024 14:14

I'm impressed by the number of loos/bathrooms - 3 loos downstairs, 7 bathrooms on the 1st floor & 1 bathroom on the 2nd floor.

Spoilt for choice!

jay55 · 02/05/2024 14:20

I think we need a group outing to have a viewing, in full costume, obviously.

I love this idea. An all woman commune of different ages and backgrounds.

We could hire men for gardening and butlering etc., and conjugal visits would be allowed at agreed times, on the understanding that the toilet seats were never left up and that they were gone after breakfast - no hanging around in their underpants making the place look untidy. And definitely no Cocklodgers moving in.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 02/05/2024 13:18

I would have bought it, but the lack of energy certificate has put me right off

still hoping for that lottery win! It’s lovely

😂😂

CaveMum · 02/05/2024 14:28

@LardoBurrows back in the mists of time when I first joined MN (2010) there were frequent "Zombie Apocalypse" threads and what we should all do in the event of a ZA. After grabbing our OFRs (Oh Fuck Rucksack - packed with essentials), the conclusion of one thread was that we head to Southampton, hijack, er, borrow a cruise ship and set sail for the Caribbean. The intelligent and attractive surviving men would have to sail in a separate ship but would be allowed on board for said conjugal visits, just to keep the species alive you understand.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/05/2024 15:32

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout we could take a carriage ride to Bath afterwards to "take the waters".

dashes off to dig out my finest pelise and reticule.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/05/2024 16:06

I have indeed taken the waters yuck in Bath; but in a pelise and reticule with Captain Wentworth aka Ciaran Hinds I’m there again!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 18:04

Wasn't it up not long ago?

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 18:08

TheCultureHusks · 02/05/2024 08:50

I wouldn’t buy it, it has a very small park and some of the windows face due west.

🤣🤣 Indeed they do, your ladyship. But we never sit in here in the evening. We have a small........

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 18:11

I shall close with the Attorney directly!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/05/2024 18:15

@Pemba it really annoys me when they use Chatsworth as Pemberly. As it's mentioned in its own right in the book. Went to Lyme park and was very disappointed that you can't do the same drive that Elizabeth and the Gardiners do on the BBC film.

TheShellBeach · 02/05/2024 18:15

The attics are dreadful.

TheShellBeach · 02/05/2024 18:18

Does Sir William Lucas still live nearby?

Capital, capital.

MotherOfCatBoy · 02/05/2024 18:33

Perhaps the Collins line has finally faltered…

Tis a truth universally acknowledged that a house worth £30,000 a year in film and photo shoot fees is in want of a marketing manager…

Yes but only if there are servants to clean them. Imagine cleaning them all yourself.
