Do you have art in your home?

I'm wondering how many people have art in their home and is it something you care about?

If you do like art on your walls, do you care whether it's an original (i.e. an actual oil painting) or a print/ reproduction of the sort you can get from Dunelm etc?

If you don't like art on your walls, what do you instead? (If anything?)

This is heartening, but feels a bit self-selecting.

As an artist I'd be really interested in 'if you don't have art on your walls, is there a particular reason?'

namechanging21 · 03/07/2024 19:28

Thanks @SuncreamAndIceCream, again very helpful. As you can tell I don't buy expensive art either hence wondering if I had unreasonable expectations re prices. Perhaps I just need to get out and looking at art more!

WorthyMauveEagle · 04/07/2024 15:55

We have quite a lot of art, currently in boxes and not on the walls bc we are renting while we are in the process of purchasing a house, but it's all originals and or commissioned work. One of the commissioned pieces is a painting of my dad which I had done soon after he passed. It cost a bit of money (about £2.5k), but honestly, I would have paid anything. Art is a very personal thing and I think for those who enjoy it, they want to be surrounded by it. That being said, it's all about how it makes you feel, whether it's mass manufactured from dunelm or an original, you can get "that feeling" from both. I know I can't wait to walk past the painting of my dad once we can finally hang it up.

We have quite a lot of local art I picked up travelling and 2 investment pieces that I love but which we plan to sell when they look like they’re reaching a value we have in mind for them. I love them but they were bought with a view to selling unfortunately

Not me because I buy too much, but one of my friends doesn’t have any art. She just isn’t interested in it at all. Her home is lovely, all crisp white painted walls, wooden floors, bold patterned curtains and plants. Even the plant pots are plain white ceramic.

Ooh this is interesting @Tralalaka - can I ask what kind of figures (tens of 1000s, or less or more?) and how, if it's low tens, you'll know that they've hit the point you had in mind?

DaphneduM · 04/07/2024 16:19

We have a mix of oil paintings, water colours and marquetry wood panels - one done by my mother-in-law and some bought in Italy. Also antique prints, a few contemporary ones and antique family embroidered samplers. My most precious inherited antique oil painting was bought by my mum for my dad when he retired. We have a contemporary oil painting of a tree which my sister-in-law thought was painted by one of us!!!!

zingally · 04/07/2024 16:32

I have an assortment of things!

I've literally today ordered a Lord of the Rings style map of my home county! It's really intricate, and I know I'll enjoy looking at it. It'll be a good conversation piece as well.
Otherwise, I have a mixture of prints that caught my eye for all manner of reasons. And photographs, lots of those!

logicisall · 04/07/2024 16:45

After decades of collecting, I have original art in several different media and price points. I rehung everything last year and now feel that I live in an art gallery. I am old and it makes me very happy.

MumChp · 04/07/2024 16:59

We have paintings from a local artists and icons from an east ortodox country bought travelling.
We also have childrens' posters and childrens art done at school.

Netcam · 04/07/2024 20:29

Yes to some of my own art (I studied and worked in the arts) and some from friends and family. Or street artists when travelling. Nothing worth any money.

Sonniuequ · 23/12/2025 12:19

I just go with pieces that make me pause for a second, like they’ve got a story humming under the surface. Some folks love bright abstracts, but I’m more drawn to narrative stuff; a print by David Miller · AI Narrative Artist really hit that sweet spot for me because it feels personal without being heavy. I only hang a few things, but each one earns its spot by making the room feel more like me.

TizerorFizz · 24/12/2025 00:44

Yes. Original paintings, some limited edition prints and photographs. Things that make us happy.

Jonnyenglish · 24/12/2025 01:10

mines more like intelligence agency type art eg map of the world, then da vincis sketches, then the mona lisa, and some sea / ships posters plus educational charts with different animals, etc

100Bees · 24/12/2025 09:55

I have about 40 pieces. A mix of original oils, textiles, photography, sketches, watercolors, acrylics, prints, mixed media, ceramics and some objects. Collected over 30 years, including a bit of travelling. I have about 20+ in a cupboard with nowhere to put them. I've never set out to buy something for a space, I just buy thing I like and can afford and then move things around on the walls. A house doesn't feel like a home to me without artwork.

Instahome2 · 24/12/2025 17:39

I've started painting as a hobby, it looks impressive enough to hang because it's paint by numbers 😀.

Yes, quite a lot. Some limited edition prints ( mainly of labradors). An inherited Ashley Jackson water colour. Some of my late mums artwork, she was very talented. And some other prints.
I like sculpture and ceramics so have some interesting pieces dotted around.

I’m currently looking for something original for our small garden, maybe a metal work sculpture.

I’m also going to commission a water colour of our current Labrador. My niece is a gifted artist, although has decided not to take it up as a profession. She does do commissions in her spare time to supplement her student grant.
The water colour below is one of hers done as a greetings card for a friend.

Your niece is talented and has a good eye for a horse, @Angrymum22 . If she can get registered, she should post on RadioHP where there's a huge pool of customers for equestrian and dog portraits. If the example you showed is representative, I think she could pay her way through uni without touching other work.

A complete mix. Our pricier stuff is some Paul Corfield prints (https://www.castlefineart.com/uk/artists/paul-corfield) and some pictures we’ve picked up at local art shows. My picture wall in my office is a mix of stuff I liked from local hobby artists and loads of postcards of proper art. I just treated myself to the attached today to finish off the living room. I generally just buy what I like if it’s affordable, doesn’t matter if it’s a £5 print or something nicer.

I like the picture what is it? X

Castle find art are very good @TheHorneSection
We’ve picked up some Bob Dylan’s from them.

I don't think its obvious once its framed. It just looks hand painted. I would recommend getting additional small paintbrushes the 3 brushes that come with the set are not great, I need nail art style thin brushes.

I think I’m off to the hobby shop in the New Year

I have a lot of original art on my walls. Collected over years, including on holiday. I love all of it. This mostly paintings, but also sculpture, silk rugs and plates

EmeraldDreams73 · 24/12/2025 22:13

My pride and joy are several pieces by a wonderful local wildlife artist. Bought gradually over 20 years. I also have loads of very old pictures, both originals and prints, all super cheap from ebay. Plus a few more modern bits. Very old cottage so I do tend towards antiques, although everything has to be cheap.

Scrumbleton · 24/12/2025 22:31

Yes - a number of pieces mostly inherited, one expensive piece from an artist I know, one bought at auction with money from a small inheritance and one from an art fair- love them all
