Do you have art in your home?

I'm wondering how many people have art in their home and is it something you care about?

If you do like art on your walls, do you care whether it's an original (i.e. an actual oil painting) or a print/ reproduction of the sort you can get from Dunelm etc?

If you don't like art on your walls, what do you instead? (If anything?)

Yes. Most of it is original, I've collected paintings for 20yrs. Mostly oils, watercolours & acrylics. Some are commissions, some are auction buys, gallery buys, some were bought on holiday, some are by local artists, others by up & coming and I also have a couple of small originals by well known artists. All kinds of subjects, landscapes, figurative & still life. I'm not keen on abstract or anything too modern though.

I'm not trained in it and don't work in the sector but I love paintings and visiting exhibitions is one of my favourite things to do.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/04/2024 18:28

Yes. I collect art - modern and antique. I like sculpture too and recently bought a pair of two 19th century carved angels. My favourite is a huge oval early 19th century painting of a centaur.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 24/04/2024 18:30

I've got quite a lot of art - most of it's original bought either at auction or from galleries. I love art and wanted to be an artist myself but unfortunately I'm really quite shit at it, which makes me appreciate it all the more! My home isn't particularly grand and my paintings are definitely the nicest things I own. I do have a couple of prints too, a sketch of the kids when they were younger, some old political artwork, bit of a mix really. And my prized signed photo of me and Vinnie Jones in my study.

fromaytobe · 24/04/2024 18:34

I've an anonymous one of a random village green that I bought from a market stall years ago. It's a print, but it has a nice frame.

The rest are pictures painted by two artist family members on DH's side.

BeyondMyWits · 24/04/2024 18:36

We have a couple of original pastels, one because it was nice, the other because it looks just like our dog. We also have a print with front doors in it, matches our regency setting beautifully. And we have some marquetry pictures of yachts produced by my late FIL. I love the look and feel of the different woods.

Meadowfinch · 24/04/2024 18:37

I have one large watercolour, one 1920s pastel and one oil painting in the sitting room. The watercolour is by a member of the RA, the pastel came from a flea market and the oil from the local art group.

Pen & ink drawings of Prague on the stairs. An abstract bronze of a horse & rider in the office. A hand gilded bowl .

I like beautiful things, but I keep them forever. I might move them around but they'll give me joy for a lifetime.

SuziLikeSuziQ · 24/04/2024 18:38

Lots of oil paintings and some pen sketches done by my grandmother - lots of her children/grandchildren have them as she was a prolific artist and we shared them out after she died and the house was sold.

I have three original pieces. One is an abstract piece I commissioned for my wedding, which was 9 separate canvases that fit together but I gave one each to those involved in our wedding. The other is a still life that I saw in a music venue and just had to buy it! The third is a photograph of the milky way shining over the sea bought by a friend.

RampantIvy · 24/04/2024 18:43

I have a couple of paitings DD did, several paintings that my grandmother and my uncle did, a set of three paintings from a local artist of a local lake, a framed embroidered picture that my mum did, another couple of paintings from a different local artist of local scenes, an Ashley Jackson print that he signed for me and a print of Tenby that we bought after a lovely holiday there.

I love art, and appreciate it all the more because I have no artistic talent whatsoever.

naffall · 24/04/2024 18:45

We have a mix. We've got a dunelm one above the bed because we couldn't afford a big origional one.
My dad has given us a couple of paintings he's done and one in particular is what I have based the decoration in the living room around, it's just lovely.

Angrymum22 · 24/04/2024 18:46

Yes, quite a lot. Some limited edition prints ( mainly of labradors). An inherited Ashley Jackson water colour. Some of my late mums artwork, she was very talented. And some other prints.
I like sculpture and ceramics so have some interesting pieces dotted around.

I’m currently looking for something original for our small garden, maybe a metal work sculpture.

I’m also going to commission a water colour of our current Labrador. My niece is a gifted artist, although has decided not to take it up as a profession. She does do commissions in her spare time to supplement her student grant.
The water colour below is one of hers done as a greetings card for a friend.

I've got quite a bit of original art by a couple of local artists and I've a limited print by another artist whose originals I can't afford. I need to love something to put it up on my walls.

SaltyGod · 24/04/2024 18:50

Yes, lots of art and I’d like more. It’s important to us as our style is otherwise quite unfussy so the art finishes the room.

We have a mix of antiques, family pieces, ones we’ve bought at galleries. I have a favourite artist that I like to collect. People comment on the pieces which is satisfying and we move pieces around regularly to change the mood of the rooms.

I would love to have the time to hunt down and buy more pieces

Dewdilly · 24/04/2024 18:50

We have loads. We don’t know where to put them all, and we rotate them. We inherited a lot. Quite a few originals. We’ve bought a few from charity shops. We have a mixture of oils, watercolour, pen and ink, engravings, prints, old and modern, some maps, photos, old fabric or lace in frames.

That reminded me of bringing my then 6 year old to a museum of modern art. there was an exhibit of lots of installation type stuff with writing. I turned around and found my dd standing under an exit sign looking thoughtful and appreciative and the security guard cracking up laughing.

We have a fair bit of art - decent enough originals (one of which I bought with money my dad left me), prints, local amateur artists. We had a local amateur paint a watercolour of our house recently and I love it.

I have a lot of original art in my house. The majority are by an uncle, who was a member of the Royal Academy. But there are a few by other painters. I can't imagine living without art.

MaxandMeg · 24/04/2024 18:56

Yes we collect it. Serious stuff. Couldn't live without proper art.

She’s brilliant!

Mangolover123 · 24/04/2024 19:01

I have a fair bit of original art in my house, probably 3 what people call investment pieces, a number of local artists, some limited edition prints. Very little mainstream artwork. We do have one William Collins (1788 -1847) not in great condition and bought for a few hundred pounds. Not valuable but a nice to have.

Bignanna · 24/04/2024 19:01

I have picture painted on silk from the far east, plus various others eg embroidered pictures, seascape by local artist. I also have a portrait painted by me, but that’s not going on my wall, as I’m very critical of my shortcomings as an artist.

Lightfrost · 24/04/2024 19:04

Yes, we have lots of art. All sorts: a few paintings I did, prints which mean something to us, and my favourites are framed pages from 1930s magazines which cost the grand total of €1!

NewFriendlyLadybird · 24/04/2024 19:04

Lots. Some inherited, some bought. A mixture of paintings, antique prints and modern artists’ prints. Only one reproduction of a favourite pre-Raphaelite painting in our bedroom.

Ladyprehensile · 24/04/2024 19:10

I was brought up with an artist father and we always had an eclectic mix of art on the walls of my childhood home.

As an adult with my own home, I’ve always had art on the walls of every room.

I haunt art shops and have refined my taste. A home without something artistic on the walls, to me, is a sterile home.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 24/04/2024 19:11

I have a couple of prints i bought in Hawaii from a local artist. Other than that just photo collages from our holidays etc

ObliviousCoalmine · 24/04/2024 19:13

Yes lots of originals/artist prints/photographs.

'Dunelm art' is the scourge of interior design.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 24/04/2024 19:14

Yes, & I made some of it. One piece in particular is huge, old now & well-loved. To us, it's just a part of the background but if someone who's never seen it before comes into the house, it's quite nice to see them stop in their tracks & to discover their reaction to it (always positive, thank goodness). Can't post a pic, it's been published including on the internet.
