Do you have art in your home?

I'm wondering how many people have art in their home and is it something you care about?

If you do like art on your walls, do you care whether it's an original (i.e. an actual oil painting) or a print/ reproduction of the sort you can get from Dunelm etc?

If you don't like art on your walls, what do you instead? (If anything?)

I wouldn't call it art but my 5 year old wrote "IKEA, two person assembly" in crayon in our dining room

Crazeland · 24/04/2024 17:44

I’ve got both. Original oil paintings, some etchings, some cheap prints. If I like it I have it 😀

dreamcatchmee · 24/04/2024 17:47

I have one, and it's my favourite thing. I always look at it. Wish I had more

Isthisjustnormal · 24/04/2024 17:51

We have a mix: some contemporary originals (oils); some old maps; some passed down stuff (oils, watercolours, old cafe de Paris menus!) ; some modern prints mostly of places we’ve visited (eg retro holiday ad style; or images of places we love. Few old photos and a few new ones. I used to have much more modern simple photo style but realise I’ve moved away from that a bit.

LightSpeeds · 24/04/2024 17:52

I've got lots of original art on my walls. All done by me!!

SantaBarbaraMonica · 24/04/2024 17:55

We’ve art everywhere. Some expensive, some cheap. All (bar one which was a gift) are originals. We tend to visit galleries abroad and look for local artists to bring something home. But also have a few more investment pieces.

Esgaroth · 24/04/2024 17:56

We have some prints. To be honest, good original art is expensive (understandably so) and we haven't made it a priority.

Once we've got all the basics sorted, I would love to spend more money on art because I think it does make a space so much lovelier.

Three framed Rothko prints. Original oil on canvas by the daughter and granddaughter of a very renowned Potteries family.
HSs water colour of a blur door. It's lovely but it needs a mouse.

MoodyMardyMargaret · 24/04/2024 17:59

Yes, love it. No prints apart from kids rooms, oil, watercolour and etchings.

Makes me happy. It’s something I think about/plan and then I save up for things I really want.

Cotswoldbee · 24/04/2024 18:00

My late Ddad was an excellent (award winning) amateur artist who did commercial and private commissions.
Have several of his ink drawings on the wall, as does my Dsis.

GrazingSheep · 24/04/2024 18:00

We have a lot. We buy at auctions rather than galleries.

MintyCedric · 24/04/2024 18:01

I’ve got a mixture…illustrated book quote from an American website I can’t remember the name of, a multi frame of small Andy Warhol prints and quotes and a large framed giclee print of ‘After the Party’.

A Keith Haring style LED light and canvasses and a few bits and pieces that I’ve painted myself.

I have quite strong colours in my home which can be a bit limiting. I’m hoping to do a makeover at some point for a more neutral vibe and more art!

AlisonDonut · 24/04/2024 18:02

Yes I have original art, and one off prints done by me on fibre paper from black and white shots that I took myself, plus all sorts of other photography and one off sculptures and pottery stuff I also made.

TheHorneSection · 24/04/2024 18:05

A complete mix. Our pricier stuff is some Paul Corfield prints (https://www.castlefineart.com/uk/artists/paul-corfield) and some pictures we’ve picked up at local art shows. My picture wall in my office is a mix of stuff I liked from local hobby artists and loads of postcards of proper art. I just treated myself to the attached today to finish off the living room. I generally just buy what I like if it’s affordable, doesn’t matter if it’s a £5 print or something nicer.

muddyford · 24/04/2024 18:06

Yes, a collection of modern Cornish paintings that I have built up over thirty years.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 24/04/2024 18:07

Most of the art on my walls is either by or of people I know. Every single piece has some kind of story behind it.

I'm similar as are most people I know. Love that feeling of looking at a piece and it reminds you of someone, something or a time in your life

Welliwould · 24/04/2024 18:17

Yes, prints in the kitchen by one of my favourite artist as I can't afford originals by her. And on the lookout for art for other rooms.
I'm always on the lookout. I would buy originals if I saw anything I really loved, thought I wouldn't tire of quickly and can afford.

PrincessOfPreschool · 24/04/2024 18:19

Kids art

Belindabelle · 24/04/2024 18:20

I have some limited prints, some IKea type posters and some originals. The original work is normally bought on holiday by local amateur artists at local art shows.

I pay anything from £20 up to £500 for original work I like.

TizerorFizz · 24/04/2024 18:22

We group ours. Photos by DH (wildlife), photos of DC, equestrian originals, prints that suit the lounge and I’m a huge fan of mirrors to reflect light. DH has a very special navigation chart of the Antarctic with beautiful wildlife depictions on it, eg penguins, seals, whales etc. It’s brilliant. I think we choose art reflecting our interests. Having said that, we’ve taken down all our David Shepherd prints. Need to sell them!

That reminded me of bringing my then 6 year old to a museum of modern art. there was an exhibit of lots of installation type stuff with writing. I turned around and found my dd standing under an exit sign looking thoughtful and appreciative and the security guard cracking up laughing.

We have a fair bit of art - decent enough originals (one of which I bought with money my dad left me), prints, local amateur artists. We had a local amateur paint a watercolour of our house recently and I love it.

Gorgonemilezola · 24/04/2024 18:22

Lots - pretty much every piece from charity shops. Some original, mostly water colours, some numbered prints, some prints, some ceramics. I 'rescue' art and rarely pay more than £10 for anything.

PermanentTemporary · 24/04/2024 18:23

Quite a lot, yes. Several pieces by my late husband, something I commissioned for a friend's 50th and got a copy of, and I have bought some pieces from artists my husband used to exhibit with. Including framing my husband's work, the pieces usually cost between £100 and £300 each.

PermanentTemporary · 24/04/2024 18:24

I don't to be honest like 'artwork' from places like Dunelm. I like something a bit more personal.
