Do you have art in your home?

I'm wondering how many people have art in their home and is it something you care about?

If you do like art on your walls, do you care whether it's an original (i.e. an actual oil painting) or a print/ reproduction of the sort you can get from Dunelm etc?

If you don't like art on your walls, what do you instead? (If anything?)

Yes, quite a lot. Some limited edition prints ( mainly of labradors). An inherited Ashley Jackson water colour. Some of my late mums artwork, she was very talented. And some other prints.
I like sculpture and ceramics so have some interesting pieces dotted around.

I’m currently looking for something original for our small garden, maybe a metal work sculpture.

I’m also going to commission a water colour of our current Labrador. My niece is a gifted artist, although has decided not to take it up as a profession. She does do commissions in her spare time to supplement her student grant.
The water colour below is one of hers done as a greetings card for a friend.

Bloody hell

That is absolutely brilliant

It's so beautifully drawn the horses head is actually coming away from the page

She really needs to keep up with commissions because she's incredible

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 22:51

And whatever she's charging she needs to charge more

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 24/04/2024 22:52

We have some prints and small originals from our travels, plus some of my own art!

Some other prints are limited editions, which I quite like, as they’re much cheaper than the original obviously, but you know not too many people will have the same.

SomethingIn · 24/04/2024 22:53

We have lots of prints and statues and sculptures from our travels and from local artists

I wouldn't call it art but my 5 year old wrote "IKEA, two person assembly" in crayon in our dining room

😂😂😂😂😂

Librarybooker · 24/04/2024 22:57

eclectic objet d’art mishmash that’s actually very deliberate and consciously set up 😂. My passion for second hand and vintage. Nothing of intrinsic value just what feels right for the cottage and reflects us. Sometimes that means old meets new. Mid century lamp in the corner next to faux wood items. Where we have the bigger Victorian height, I have a black and white poster sized print of a photo of the 1966 floods in Florence.

Unavailable101 · 24/04/2024 22:58

Yes but it's all homemade. The odd piece by me and lots by the kids.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/04/2024 23:02

I have prints because sadly nobody will sell me an original Frankenthaler or Blackadder for fifty pounds.

mondaytosunday · 24/04/2024 23:08

Yes. My mother was an art dealer so I have some from her, some I've bought on my own, one really big one my husband bought, and some my very talented daughter has painted, and some both my kids did when young. Most of the artists I knew or met when buying. All original. I've run out of wall space and have about a dozen paintings in storage.
In the dining area I also have colourful wall baskets (like giant shallow bowls but made to hang on walls).
I have sculptures too.

pizzaHeart · 24/04/2024 23:14

Not really, just a few frames with our photos on the walls.
I don’t think I’m an arty type neither is DH.

MrsAvocet · 24/04/2024 23:18

We've got one original watercolour that we bought on honeymoon. Its not by anyone famous or anything but it's of the place we stayed and I just like it.
Otherwise we have a few photos of the kids on the walls and some posters of classic yachts that we can only dream of ever sailing. Oh, and in the kitchen we have a poster for our now defunct local bus route that DS won a competition to design when he was in reception...I guess that's original art!

Starseeking · 24/04/2024 23:21

I love art brightening up the walls.

What I don't love is high prices, so my wall art is from Desenio, which suits me right down to the ground 🤣😂🥲

missinglalaland · 24/04/2024 23:25

Yes, quite a bit. None expensive though. Mixture of acrylics, oils, pastels, water colours and prints also potteries and wooden carvings, and blown glass. Some abstracts, some of the sea, some of the countryside, some West African carvings, some antique prints and reproduction maps.
It’s been bought new snd used, at auctions, in car parks.
For me, along with all the books, it makes my house a home.

SleepyTraveller · 24/04/2024 23:27

I have mostly prints (including some limited prints) and almost all have either a connection to something special (e.g. a place, a band, a person) or have a really specific meaning for me. There are some photos taken by a friend too. A few small things are impulsive "ooh, that's pretty" purchases from local artists, and I expect they will be rotated out over time (unless I get really attached)

Instahome2 · 24/04/2024 23:31

I have a mix of things. I have a lovely Japanese print from a stall in Afflecks Palace, Mcr in my hallway.
An original landscape photo of our favourite place in the Lake District chosen from the photographers gallery.

I love my music lyrics wall on the landing, cheap and easy to make and gives me an ear worm everytime I walk past.

We have a lot of empty walls I'd like to fill but I'd like it to be organic when I see something I love, not just getting it for the sake of it which I was guilty of in the past.

Do you have art in your home?
missinglalaland · 24/04/2024 23:31

My favourite. Bought for £30.
I’m in my 50s now. It takes time to collect things you love that you can afford. In our 30s we mostly had prints. It built up over time.

pelotonaddiction · 24/04/2024 23:34

Yep. One a friend did for me and another given to me by someone
Plus various prints etc
I want to do a gothic gallery wall eventually

LunaTheCat · 24/04/2024 23:35

Yes we do. A couple local artists, a couple water colours my artists well known in our country, an oil piece by another artist. Lots stuff we just liked . People comment when they come to our home.. art makes it home.

SkaneTos · 24/04/2024 23:35

Yes, I have art in my home.
Nothing of high monetary value, as far as I know, but I have some family members and friends who are professional artists, so I have some of their artwork - some that they have given to me, and some that I have bought from them. I really like all the art that I have in my home.

Craicbaby · 24/04/2024 23:39

Yes, mix of stuff bought at auctions, by friends, local artists from various places we’ve lived. A framer near where we live now was downsizing her house and sold some beautiful work she’d owned and no longer had room for, so I would go in with a small lino cut to frame and come away with two large oils.

henlake7 · 25/04/2024 13:14

I dont think I have any proper 'art'. I do have a mish mash of prints, junk shop paintings, random wall hangings and pictures by friends.
Its abit eclectic really.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 25/04/2024 13:40

Yes quite a lot, mainly a mix of original art and fine art reproductions direct from the artist or an independent gallery.

We have a few mass market prints by well known historic artists and photographers that wouldn't be affordable to us but mainly like to support living artists.

I would encourage people to visit independent galleries and local art fairs. Owning art doesn't have to be expensive.

And degree shows for local art schools/art foundation courses.

Don't let Tate Modern know or they will be round to cut it out and make an installation out of it

eileandubh · 25/04/2024 14:42

A mixture of engravings, old maps, old posters, some originals from local artists, some mid-century Syroco wall hanging type sculpturey stuff that I like more than DH does, big letterpress prints from the local printers... I moved from a house with lots of walls to a house with smaller, slopier walls so don't have as much up as I'd like.
